Turtle Island
Turtle Island
In 2127 Mullah Elijah Rafsanjani arrives on the eastern seaboard of Turtle Island that being the continent renamed after the Italian merchant Amerigo Vespucci during the western epoch c1492 to 2081. As part of his Peace and Brotherhood jihad he has embarked on a fact-finding mission by ..
.. visiting the centres of the fallen Western Civilisation. The Big Apple is rotten. Graffiti sprayed down the side of the Statue of Liberty in bright red includes slogans such as BAD DAY, NIGHT FALLS and ALAS, BABYLON. Homeless people huddle inside the unlit and unheated Manhattan apartment blocks. New New York City is a humanitarian disaster.

.. In his address he drew parallels with the career of Paul Von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg, German Command in Chief also recalled from retirement twice, once to lead the military, once for the Presidency, both in late middle age and at a time of national crisis. Unlike the 'Wooden Titan' Hindenburg, Brass Hat was back to get a result. In theory he was promoted from retired Six-Star General to Commander in Chief. In practice he was given the keys to the hydrogen bomb. Also Bacteriological weapons that Unit 731 gave Brass Hat in 1945 to secure the amnesty of the Japanese scientists against trial for the extermination of 200,000 Chinese citizens during World War II. Quite a cocktail when combined with a determination to make war with the China to re-unite Korea and re-instate Chaing Kai-shek.

After(cont.)
The crack of another gunshot startled them all, and Jake shielded the president with his body. Eli and Kevin appeared at the top of the stairs, firing at something Jake couldn't see. They were both bleeding, now. “We need to get the hell outta here,” Kevin shouted down at them.
“Move,” Jake shouted at the president and Janice. He ran up the stairs and stuck his head out long enough to spot the two men shooting at them from around the corners at the end of the hallway. He took a lucky shot and dropped one of them, then yelled at the other, “Give up now, and you don't have to die.” The bullet whizzing by his ear gave the man's answer. Jake looked at Eli, who was white-faced and splattered heavily with what Jake assumed was his own blood. Kevin wasn't in much better shape, but at least he looked like he only had one wound. “On three, we haul ass down there, firing everything we got at that fool,” he told them. “He's goin' down.” They nodded quickly, and he counted off, “One, two – three!” They charged down, Jake in the lead, pumping bullets into the corner that the guard was hiding behind. They stopped only when they saw the man's body fall in front of them, crimson with his own spilled blood. Jake shouted back at the stairwell, “Janice, get the president up here, quick. We're moving!”
“I think that's all of them,” Kevin wheezed. He was holding his side, vainly trying to staunch the rapid flow of blood that was pumping out of his wound. He was holding Eli up with his other arm.
Jake said, “We still need to get the hell outta here.” He pulled Eli from Kevin's grip and propped him up. When Janice and the president joined them, he said, “Y'all help Bradley, I'll get Eli.” He slapped Kevin lightly in the face to get his attention. “Don't you die on me, Bradley. You ain't loaned me any money, yet.”
As President Bush took him by the arm, Kevin smiled and said, “Hey, I'm a millionaire and I met the president. That was all I ever wanted to do.”
President Bush said, “I'd prefer it if you didn't die just yet, Bradley. There's enough dead people in my house.”
“Sorry, Mr. President,” Kevin muttered.
As quickly as they could, they lumbered out of the ranch house, heading off down the field towards the creek bed. Janice shouted at Jake, “Hey! Why don't we just take one of their cars?”
Jake looked back the car port. There were plenty of cars sitting there. “We don't have any keys.”
“You think I don't know how to hotwire a car?”
“Let's go.” They changed course and piled everyone into a large sedan. Janice got under the steering wheel and worked for several minutes.
The engine roared to life and she popped into the driver's seat. “Yeah, baby.” She threw the car into gear and took off down the road. She came up to the gate at the edge of the property and just ripped through it. The grill took some damage and the windshield cracked a little, but the car was still running, so she kept it moving.
Eli's groans grew in intensity in the back seat as Jake attempted to keep him alive as best he could. “We need a hospital,” Jake shouted to Janice.
“The nearest one is a couple hours away,” she told him. She looked into the rear-view mirror and saw Eli's face. His lips were completely without color, and his eyes were unfocused. She locked eyes with Jake and shook her head.
He nodded and turned his attention back to Eli. “You gonna make it, Eli. You're a hero, now. Maybe you'll finally get laid.” A slight smile curled Eli's lips. “That's it, you concentrate on that.” He looked over at Kevin, whose lips were now sprinkled with a little dark blood. “Bradley, you ain't got nothing but a scratch, so I don't wanna hear no complainin' from you.”
“Yes, Sergeant,” Kevin whispered.
Janice put the gas pedal to the floor and tried as hard as she could to keep the car on the road.

After(cont.)
“Have we got the air conditioner on?” Kevin's body was racked with shudders again. Jake took off his jacket and laid it across him.
Jake looked up at the front seat and asked, “How much farther?”
“Maybe 20 miles.”
Jake turned his attention back to Eli. At least Kevin was able to feel cold. Eli had stopped talking about 15 minutes before, and was now completely unresponsive when Jake tried to rouse him. He felt the young man's neck again and waited. The pulse was even weaker than the last time he had checked, and harder to find. He didn't think there was any point in trying to save Eli anymore, so he turned to Kevin and checked his pulse. It was a little weak, but it was there.
“Wish I hadn't given up drinking now,” the president said from the front seat.
“Me, too,” Janice muttered. She was driving a good hundred miles an hour, and had a death grip on the steering wheel. She had almost cracked up at least three times, but wasn't slowing down. This was worse than the drive in the dark two days ago, because there were a couple of people dying in her back seat. She felt that her pounding heart was more than making up for their weakly pumping ones. She wanted to take her hand off the wheel long enough to wipe off the sweat that was dripping down into her eyes, but didn't dare.
There was a gasp from the back seat, and Janice nearly lost control. Eli's body was trying to keep alive, and failing. Spasms ripped through his body, and Jake tried to hold him down. It took several minutes, but the jerking finally stopped, and the last trickles of blood leaked out of his mouth. Jake pressed his hand onto Eli's carotid for a few minutes, but there was nothing there. “He's gone,” Jake said, quietly.
Janice sobbed. She hadn't been that close to Eli, but he and Mike had always been dependable for all their quirks. The president patted her shoulder comfortingly, and she regained control. “We can still save Kevin,” she said. “Just a few more miles.” The lights of Austin were blazing up towards them, and she kept her foot down hard on the accelerator.

Steph woke up to pounding on her door. She shouted, “Who is it?” She looked around for that gun that Mike had left her while she did it.
“It's me,” Mike said from the other side of the door. “Quick, let us in.”
Steph went over to the door and reached a hand out to the lock. She paused, then looked through the peephole, first. She saw Mike and Joan. She assumed that George was there, too, just out of sight. She opened the door and asked, “What is it?”
Mike and the kids rushed in and Mike shut the door behind them, latching it and throwing the deadbolt. “Guard's going through the hotel; the front's moved up to us. We don't have to worry about going around them.”
“Are we safe here?”
“No,” Mike said. “We need to get the hell out.”
“Let's get to the car, then.”
“They'll take Mike if they see him,” George said. “I saw 'em take three guys looked even scrawnier'n him.”
“Hey,” Mike said, offended.
“They'll probably take you, too,” Joan said, looking at her mother. “Maybe even me. I think they're pretty desperate.”
“Crap.” She peeked through the curtains outside. She saw two large military trucks in the parking lot. In their backs were civilians, holding rifles and looking very nervous. “Maybe we need to be ballsy about it.”
“What do you mean?” Mike was definitely unwilling to leave the room.
“Follow my lead.” She got her clothes on and led them out of the room. Reluctantly, the other three followed her as she walked straight up to one of the soldiers. She asked him, “You looking for people?”
“Yes, ma'am,” the young man told her. “Hop on the back of that truck and they'll give you a rifle.”
“Got one already, and enough for my boy, here, too,” she said, pointing back at Mike. “Our SUV's better'n that truck, too. You need scouts? We can go anywhere in that thing.” She pointed at their car, and the soldier looked the vehicle over.
“All right. We need people with that kinda attitude.” He took out a map of the area and pointed out a line that had been drawn about 10 miles outside of the town. “This is where the enemy's advancing.” He pointed at a red circle just outside of the town. “This is our command post.” He showed her a thin line indicating a road. “This road will take you around the enemy line. See what you can find out, then report back to our command post.”
“You got it, sir,” she said, saluting smartly. He returned her salute, then handed her the map and returned to collecting other people from the hotel. She hurried them off to the SUV, whispering, “Try not to smile.”

in 709 AUC, Gaius Julius Caesar, listening to the dreams of his wife, sends a small group of his house guards to the Senate house in Rome. There, they find almost 5 dozen conspirators ready to attack and kill Caesar. The guards, outnumbered by the senators, barely make it out of the Senate alive to report back to their master. Caesar rallies the people of Rome to take the Senate, and arrives at the head of his unruly army just as the conspirators were fleeing. There is pitched battle in the streets of the Eternal City as the conspirators and Caesar's men fight for control of the Republic. Caesar wins the struggle, and crowns himself Emperor of Rome; exactly the result that the conspirators had feared. After his coronation, Caesar sentences the remaining assassins to death, and they are crucified along the Appian Way, as a warning to all others who would oppose Caesar.

in 1891, Major Mark Wainwright and his small band of soldiers reach Kansas City and slip through, thanks to the general chaos in the city. Wainwright sends a telegram back east to Washington to let his superiors know that former President Cleveland has been taken captive, as have the majority of the major's men. He adds that he will proceed on into Missouri and wait for orders at the nearest telegraph office. Meanwhile, President Cleveland is given an audience with the Farmer's Council that, with 'Sockless' Jerry Simpson at its head, has assumed control of Kansas. “Gentlemen,” he says to them, “I understand your grievances and desire for redress. I, myself, have felt the cold sting of injustice within recent years, as you well know. But, within our nation's democratic institutions, we have the means for addressing your concerns. This unlawful usurpation of state government will not end well, gentlemen. In fact, given the great power of the nation surrounding you, it can only end in your arrest or death. I implore you, therefore, to surrender the government back to the men who were duly elected to it, and give up before more blood is shed in this useless endeavor.” Although most of the council is moved by Cleveland's words, Simpson stands to answer him. “Mr. President, although you have spoken eloquently of our great institutions and their ability to right wrongs, your own history gives the lie to that. Your office was stolen out from under you by men who place the pursuit of power and their own personal greed higher than the good of the nation. We saw such men in control here in Kansas. Now they are not.” Addressing the rest of the council, he concludes, “I would recommend our methods to take care of Washington, rather than Washington's methods to take care of us.”

in 1968, an act of sheer horror was halted by the bravery and humanity of three soldiers in the small village of My Lai, Vietnam. Pilot Hugh Thompson and his crewmen Glenn Andreotta and Lawrence Coburn flew into what looked like a massacre of civilians by US soldiers. Even though the three were outranked by several of the officers in the village, Thompson ordered his men to shoot anyone who went after a civilian while he called in backup and medical helicopters. Only one officer, a Lt. Calley, challenged them, and a bullet in his kneecap convinced him to stand down. All of the officers on the scene were arrested and taken into custody, and the surviving villagers were evacuated – Calley and the others had killed dozens before Thompson came along to stop the attack. When backup arrived with MPs to arrest the soldiers, Thompson led his men through the village, taking pictures of what had occurred here when men had completely lost their humanity. His pictures were used as evidence in the court-martial trials of Calley and his superior officer, Captain Ernest Medina, and his emotional testimony sealed their fates. President Lyndon Johnson personally apologized to the people of Vietnam for the attack, and presented Thompson, Andreotta and Coburn with medals in a White House ceremony celebrating their honor and heroism.

His plan is to use the Laps in a Trojan Horse manoeuvre, gaining access to the Turtle Island at Manna-hata (Manhattan) to disable the Mesh. A BBC programme The Plot Against Harold Wilson broadcast in 2006 gives strong suggestions that the country came closer to military government than previously believed. In a series of secret tapes recorded just after his shock 1976 resignation, Harold Wilson explained that for 8 months of his premiership he did not feel in full control and didn't 'feel he knew what was going on, fully, in security'. He alleged that ex-military leaders had built up private armies in anticipation of 'wholesale domestic liquidation' and Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh's uncle and mentor, would be installed as interim Prime Minister. Two plots, in the late 1960s and mid 1970s, were alleged by Wilson. Lord Louis Mountbatten was assassinated by agents who planted a bomb in his boat at Mullaghmore, County Sligo in the Republic of Ireland 27 August 1979 ending the threat of this coup d'etat.

Please email send your story to Alternate Historian and please remember to include the posting date you require.

In 1955, on this day budding film star James Dean died in a car accident.

Dean anticipated the Goth fad by two generations. In East of Eden he played a young teenager who has a human father but a vampire mother who deserted him and his twin brother at birth. He exposes their vampire heritage to his twin who offers his services to the US Army during World War 1. His twin dies at the hands of a vampire in the German army, a young corporal named Adolph Hitler.

In a Rebel Without a Cause Dean played a young teenager who redeems himself after a peer drives off a cliff in a deadly game of chicken. He along with Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood lead a daring raid on the lair of sea monster who conducts sinster experiments on teenagers. He reedems himself when he rescues his peer whom he thought dead along with others.

In Giant he played a young man who struck it rich after space aliens reveal to him the location of oil fields.

Today Dean is revered by young goths as an early forerunner of their subculture.

Haley is trying to give his people a myth to live by, overturning other myths about the Black American experience and giving African Americans a proud history. They must succeed.

In 1964, Hawthorn Abendsen published the counter-factual novel The Grasshopper Lies Heavy. Set in America in 1962, the once-isolationist nation had been propelled to global domination as the world's first hyper power All because some twenty years earlier Japan has provoked America by going pre-emptive on the US Pacific Fleet at Hawaii. The essence of Dick's masterpiece is the book within the book, 'Man in the High Castle', a work of fiction written by a man called Philip K Dick. It describes a world where the Japanese won the Pacific war - as a result, it has been banned by the Americans. Given his unpopularity with the world's two great powers, Dick is said to live in a heavily fortified home and has become known as "The Man in the High Castle". Critics panned the concept but loved the story. What If?
What If?
After all, it was predicated on the US Fleet leaving San Diego for Hawaii when Americans overwhelmingly disapproved of war in the Pacific. Today we know that Mr Roosevelt meant it when he said at Boston on October 30 1940: "I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again: Your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars."

In 1946, on this day sentencing occurred at the Nuremberg Trials. A guilty charge was found against Commander of the British Eighth Army Colonel T.E. Lawrence and subordinates Bernard Law Montgomery, Archibald Percival Wavell and Sir Claude John Eyre Auchinleck and all four were shot the very next day. Granted a last request, Lawrence wrote a short letter for Winston Churchill who - along with the remnants of the British Royal Navy - had withdrawn to Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Thanking Churchill for his confidence in the Command appointment, Lawrence blamed his defeat upon a group of Egyptian officers, headed by Gamal Abdul Nassar, and Anwar el-Sadat, who secretly sided with the Germans, ridding North ..
.. Africa of Britain's presence. In a final, chilling paragraph, Lawrence entered a biblical quote from the Book of Proverbs, 9:1: Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars

In 1963, John F Kennedy was prescribed the stiff canvas shoulder-to-groin metal framed brace that would deflect an assassin's bullet at Dallas, saving his life less than seven weeks later. "Kennedy may have been saved . . . by his sexual excesses and compulsiveness," Hersh wrote in the Dark Side of Camelot "He severely tore a groin muscle while frolicking poolside with one of his sexual partners during a West Coast trip in the last week of September 1963. The pain was so intense that the White House medical staff prescribed a stiff canvas shoulder-to-groin metal framed brace that locked his body in a rigid upright position. It was far more constraining that his usual back brace, which he also continued to wear. The two braces were meant to keep him as comfortable as possible during the strenuous days of campaigning, including that day in Dallas.”JFK

Alternate Historian's Note: Now that our NaNoWriMo novel, After, has been concluded, we are beginning work on a new project – a collection of several timelines with more-or-less complete stories inside them – The Fall, the Tolman timeline, the Mormon War, the Lascaux Cave story, and more – that will have After included with it. Once they're edited together, we'll put the lot up for sale on Lulu. If you would be interested in this, or would like to suggest something for inclusion in the collection, please email me and let me know. And, speaking of side projects, Guest Historian Stephen Payne has one, Crimson Kiss, available for free on Lulu. Check it out.

in 1908, the Great War begins after King Carlos of Portugal is assassinated by leftist revolutionaries seeking revenge for his imposition of the dictator Joao Franco on their country. His son, King Luis Filipe, attacks the leftists with a ferocity that appalls even the other monarchies of Europe. Leftists across the continent pour into the small nation in solidarity, and the conflict spills over into Spain by the summer. The French are drawn in to aid their allies in Spain, and the Italians send aid to Portugal, and by 1910, a complicated web of alliances and treaties plunges the entire continent and all its holdings into war. The loosely-aligned Liberalistes win the war after a decade of struggle, overthrowing every government in Europe except the Swiss. The new Confederation of Europe that rises from the ashes of the continent's old ways becomes an exporter of leftist ideology all over the world, and soon begins a low-level conflict with the USA, Japan and China in the Long War from 1922-1986, when the last of the Big Three, Japan, finally empowers a Liberaliste-dominated parliament.

in 2007, a confused Angelic host brings former European Union President and Anti-Christ Morris Appleby before newly returned savior Emmanuel. The freshly converted Appleby bows before his master and vows, “My life, heart and soul are yours, Prince of Peace.” Emmanuel looks at the host, who shrug and leave, happy to let the big guy handle this one. Emmanuel, in turn, punts the problem upstairs, sending Appleby bodily to Heaven for judgement.

Alternate Historian's Note: Our Guest Historian, Stephen Payne, suggested that it was time for a contest, so we're going to have an April Fool's Day Contest! Email us up to 3 entries for an alternate April 1st and we will post the best 10, with your own credit and link to your website (if you have one). We'll also see if we have enough credit for an ultimate winner to get a complimentary TIAH mug, but we can't promise anything on that yet. Get researching those alternate histories now, folks! The deadline will be March 29th.

in 1945, author Jimmie Louise Tims was born in Huntsville, Texas. As a child, her fascination with family history led her to uncover the stories of generations of her ancestors, and her publications of the story of the Tims ancestral line, Footprints in Time, took their place beside Gone With The Wind as iconic treatments of the mythical Old South. She won the National Book Award in 1997 for her semi-autobiographical novel, Cats and Rats in Harmony.

in 1953, Cambridge biologist William Hughes pays a visit to the constabulary to speak with them about Maurice Wilkins' possible involvement in the murder of James Watson and Francis Crick. Although the police listen to him, they seem unwilling to move against Wilkins without something more than what Hughes can give them. Hughes loses his temper with them, railing, “Doesn't Miss Franklin's obvious fear of him mean anything to you?” He storms out, unaware that he is being followed from the station. That evening, in his apartment, Hughes observes a trench-coated figure from his window moments before the figure opens fire on him, breaking his window and showering him with glass. Fortunately, he only suffers minor cuts, because the bullets miss him. As he rings up the operator to ask her to send the police, he mutters to himself, “Well, at least now, they'll take me seriously.”

However not long afterwards came the return of Bartholomeu Dias from a failed rounding of the Horn of Ifriquia, the Arabic term for the region known to the Europeans as Africa. Dias' report mirrored that of Columbus and greater weight was of course given to Portugal's native son over the fair-haired Genoese Columbus.
