Fables

Alternate Historian says, everyone at the Academy was thrilled to receive a smashing story from Mr Brian Brackney, sincerely. Brian's post takes a very well deserved place today - thank you, sir. Please email send your story to Alternate Historian and please remember to include the posting date you require.

In 1955, on this day budding film star James Dean died in a car accident.

Dean anticipated the Goth fad by two generations. In East of Eden he played a young teenager who has a human father but a vampire mother who deserted him and his twin brother at birth. He exposes their vampire heritage to his twin who offers his services to the US Army during World War 1. His twin dies at the hands of a vampire in the German army, a young corporal named Adolph Hitler.

In a Rebel Without a Cause Dean played a young teenager who redeems himself after a peer drives off a cliff in a deadly game of chicken. He along with Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood lead a daring raid on the lair of sea monster who conducts sinster experiments on teenagers. He reedems himself when he rescues his peer whom he thought dead along with others.

In Giant he played a young man who struck it rich after space aliens reveal to him the location of oil fields.

Today Dean is revered by young goths as an early forerunner of their subculture.

Rudy Giuliani
Ground Zero
In 2007, Rudolph William Louis "Rudy" Giuliani took legal action against Mike Resnick, editor of "Alternate Tyrants II" for his short story "Ground Zero". In the story, Giuliani used the September 11th attack as a pretext for an extended term as Mayor, but criticisms that emerge during 2002 were quickly suppressed.
There is specifically much criticism surrounding his administration during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Others criticisms include his lack preparedness before the attacks by allegedly ignoring the ongoing threat to New York City from Islamist terrorists in the preceding years. His handling of Ground Zero air quality issue is also questioned for downplaying the health effects of the air afterwards. It is also mentioned that his recovery effort of the aftermath of Ground Zero, asserting that Giuliani rushed to conclude the recovery effort once gold and silver had been recovered from World Trade Center vaults. It was alleged that Guiliani never read 9/11 Commission's Report and that he didn't attend any meetings of the Iraq Study Group after being appointed to it in early 2006.

In 1687, the Royal Society of London debated Edmond Halley's thesis that the Earth was hollow based on Isaac Newton stating the relative densities of Moon to Earth as 9 to 5. Halley simply invoked these figures: “Sir Isaac Newton has demonstrated the Moon to be more solid than our Earth, as 9 to 5; why may we not then suppose four ninths of our globe to be cavity? I have adventured to make these Subterranean orbs capable of being inhabited”. Three hundred years later, the contrary truth emerged, the moon was cavity, and was inhabited within. Edmond Halley

In 1938, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland awoke screaming from the most appalling nightmare of his entire life. In the dream, he had been giving Hitler Czechoslovakia on a dish. The inscription in the flag: "On towards the East!". Chamberlain realised it was a strategic error to exclude Stalin from the talks. He acted upon this insight and the result was the Eden-Molotov Agreement in 1940, which effectively terminated Germany militarism on the continent of Europe.

In 1938, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland awoke screaming from the most appalling nightmare of his entire life. In the dream, he was back at Heston Aerodrome, west of London, giving the "Peace for our time" speech. His arm felt damp, and he was horrified to see blood dripping along his sleeve from the piece of paper that he now realised was a death warranty. Worse, the audience for his speech were shaven headed skeletons from Nazi death camps. Chamberlain resolved to undo this Carthaginian Peace, and appointed Winston Churchill as the Minister of Defence shortly thereafter. Working together, they quickly defeated Hitler and ensured “a non-Carthaginian Peace for our time”.Munich Agreement

The Nations

In 2005, two of life's great survivors were the mid-week guests of British television chat show host Michael Parkinson. To the fierce joy of the televison audience, Irish singer, instrumentalist and songwriter Phil Lynott played an ad-hoc riff from Whiskey in the Jar.

Lynott then spoke of the "lost years" when he was dogged by drug and alcohol dependency. Lynott said that he not touched any of the hard stuff since the night of December 25, 1985, when he was rushed to hospital suffering from a heroin overdose. He suffered medical death through heart failure on January 4, 1986 at the age of 36. Exactly fifteen years before, he had recorded Thin Lizzy's debut album began on January 4, 1971.

Yul Brynner congratulated Lynott on a beautiful move, a pun on both the riff, and also his recovery from death. Brynner had given up the hard stuff too, "Now that I'm here, I tell you, don't smoke." was his pearl of wisdom for the evening.
In 2014, white supremacist South African time-travellers set a course for New York City 1980. Led by Andries Rhoodie, the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (Afrikaner Resistance Movement) are executing Plan B of "America Will Break", following their failure to alter the course of the Civil War by supplying the Guns of the South. This time, their objectives are more limited - to “preserve” the Republic of South Africa by extending the lifespan of Apartheid indefinately. The supremacists figure that by accentuating John Belushi's near-death experience on the set of the Blues Brothers, filming will be cancelled thus destroying a vital symbol of inter-racial redemption that unmistakeably changed the world forever. Trouble is the AWB's time machine is simply unable to penetrate a shadowy sphere around the filming of the movie. The power of R&B just will not be denied.
In 1955, Nikita Khruschev prepared the Secret Speech or Khruschev Report which he intended to deliver "On the Personality Cult and its Consequences" at the 20th Party Congress. Needing to emphasise the insanity of the final years of Joseph Stalin's monstrous rule in the USSR, Khruschev described the grotesque scenes from the Premier's dacha. Late at night members of the Politburo were compelled to dance to long playing records of barking dogs. He described the sick enjoyment of the bullies Stalin and Lavrenty Beria watching in a room full of mirrors to intensify the scene. Twisted images reflected back to the Politburo members, save Stalin and Beria's. Being nosferatu, they caste no reflection.

When he awakes, he hurries to the village elder and recounts the tale. “You must send me there with your rituals”, says Omoro in the Mandinka tongue.

Norman Conquest
Norman Conquest
In 1066, the Norman Conquest began as William the Conqueror invaded England across the Calais-Dover land bridge. Political union followed territorial integrity. The French Province Bretagne also known as Brittany joined with the land referred to by Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae as Britannia major or "Greater Britain". The term “greater” referred simply to the larger lass made west of the land bridge, for Monmouth to distinguish it from Britannia minor, "Lesser Britain" or Brittany on the continent; regrettably, it has been misinterpreted ever since as a statement of grandeur.

In 1867, the Prussian Government took control of Pihemanu one hundred and forty nautical miles east of the International Date Line. Known to America as Midway, as its name suggests, the Island lies nearly halfway between North America and Asia. It also lies almost halfway around the earth from Greenwich, England. In September 1940, Hitler loaned the base to Fleet Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto at the signature of the Tripartite Pact by the Axis powers of Japan, Germany and Italy. This move had been widely anticipated, and indeed had prevented President Roosevelt from ordering the Pacific Fleet to sail from San Francisco to Pearl Harbour where it would of course be too vulnerable to stealth attacks.Midway

In 1969, at a book-signing award in New York City the author Kurt Vonnegut show-cased his instant classic Slaughterhouse-Five. Afterwards, he stepped straight into the scene of his own death aged 84 on April 11th 2007. Vonnegut was comfortable with the concept of fatalism. He understood very well from his Tralfamadorian intimates that because time is another dimension all three-dimensional slices as we know them exist simultaneously. Therefore, everyone is always alive and death is not a tragic event. Actually Vonnegut had been unstuck in time since 1945. His life seemed like a cyclone, in which his birth, youth, old age, and death were all thrown violently around by the central event, the destruction of Dresden. And so it goes...
In 1975, only nuclear-armed North America and Australia stand between fascism and world conquest. Discovering that oligarchs from 2025 have assisted the Axis victory, the Allies capture the time travel technology. They then use this technology to send a squad back to 1938, the earliest period of time they can reach, to try and stop the Nazis. The plan is to engineer the election of Churchill and Roosevelt. Due to their awareness of the extent of the Nazi threat, this is expected to led to the US entering the war and Britain not surrendering. However, in 1938 they discover two major problems with The Proteus Operation. With no way back to replan with President Kennedy, the team discover that Roosevelt had drowned whilst vacationing at Campobello Island, New Brunswick in August 1921. And Winston Churchill had died in an automobile accident on New York City December 13, 1931..

In 1964, the Warren Commission released its report, finding persuasive evidence of a conspiracy to kill the President and terminate anti-segregationist developments in America. During the summer of 1963, Southern Governors including George Wallace, Orval Faubus and Ross Barnett had commissioned the assassin Lee Harvey Oswald whilst engaging with anti-Castro groups in New Orleans.
The group had received advanced notification of the motorcade route, and found a job for Oswald as an order-filler at the Texas Book Repository just three weeks before the visit to Dallas. This event parachuted Lyndon Baines Johnson into office, where he launched a Civil Rights program. This promoted a right-wing backlash as General Curtis LeMay assumed office. The coup was dramatized in the movie Seven Days in November (1964) with Kirk Douglas playing the role of “Bombs Away” and Burt Lancaster playing Texas favourite son, LBJ.

In 1964, the Warren Commission released its report. As widely predicted, the Commission's conclusion was a re-affirmation of the lone gunman theory that Snake Eyes, acting alone, had shot President John F. Kennedy. There were, however, too many unresolved issues for America. Most intriguingly, who was the mysterious stranger on Dealey Plaza who held the placard Snake Eyes watching you? prompting Kennedy to duck, whereupon the assassins bullets thudded harmlessly into the upholstery of the 1961 Lincoln Continental. Snake Eyes
Snake Eyes
That question had to wait fifteen years until the Final Report of the House Select Committee on Assassinations. That piece of sensational evidence came from a Dicta belt recording from a police officer's motorcycle that was escorting Kennedy’s motorcade. Listening to an incomprehensible string of guttural noises, it would be hard to image a more alien sounding conversation.

Carolus Magnus"Let peace, concord and unanimity reign among all Christian people .. for without peace we cannot please God."
~ Carolus Magnus, grandson of Charles Martel who was defeated at the Battle of Tours 11 October 732
Carolus Magnus - Frankish insurgent
Frankish insurgent
Carlous Magnus (Charlemagne) was the architect of the European idea, yet unable to establish control over his native territories of the Franks and the Lombards. The set backs at the Battles of Toulouse (721) and Tours (732) had gifted the keys of south-west France into the hands of the Governors of Al-Andalus. Umayyad control spread inexorably westward from Narbonne into Aquitaine. A synopsis of the Frankish insurgency is provided at Wikipedia

Martin Luther"Hier stehe ich. Ich kann nicht anders. Gott helfe mir. Amen (Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen.)"
~ Martin Luther addressing the Diet of Worms, 1521
Martin Luther - Heretic
Heretic
Before being sentenced to death by Emperor Charles V for heresy following the Imperial Diet.

Emperor Charles V opened the imperial Diet of Worms on January 22, 1521. Luther was summoned to renounce or reaffirm his views.

When he appeared before the assembly on April 16, Johann Eck, an assistant of the Archbishop of Trier , acted as spokesman for the emperor. He presented Luther with a table filled with copies of his writings. Eck asked Luther if the books were his and if he still believed what these works taught. Luther requested time to consider his answer. It was granted. Luther prayed, consulted with friends and mediators and presented himself before the Diet the next day. When the counselor put the same questions to Luther, he said: "They are all mine, but as for the second question, they are not all of one sort."

Luther went on to categorize the writings into three categories: The first category was of works which were well received by even his enemies. These he would not reject. The second category of his books attacked the abuses, lies and desolation of the Christian world. These, Luther believed, could not safely be rejected without encouraging abuses to continue. The third and final group contained attacks on individuals. He apologized for the harsh tone of these writings, but did not reject the substance of what he taught in them. If he could be shown from the Scriptures that he was in error, Luther continued, he would reject them.

Counsellor Eck, after countering that Luther had no right to teach contrary to the Church through the ages, asked Luther to plainly answer the question: "Would Luther reject his books and the errors they contain?" Luther replied: "Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason —I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other— my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe."

Prince Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, obtained an agreement that if Luther appeared he would be promised safe passage to and from the meeting. Such a guarantee was essential after the treatment of John Hus, who was tried and executed at the Council of Constance in 1415, despite a safe conduct pass.

The edict was seen as a divisive move that distressed more moderate men, in particular Desiderius Erasmus who led a violent reformation that burned through Europe for two centuries. A synopsis of the Diet of Worms can be viewed at Wikipedia

Dominion
Dominion
In 1580, Sir Francis Drake circumnavigated the globe, establishing himself as the sixteenth century role model for the Draka, an aggressive militaristic slave-owning society. As described by historian S. M. Stirling, during the American Revolutionary War, the Netherlands declared war on Great Britain, resulting in the loss of its Cape Colony. After defeat in Revolutionary War, the Loyalists settled in the new Crown Colony of Drakia (later, the Dominion of Draka) in South Africa.

In 1907, New Zealand and Newfoundland each became an integrated part of metropolitan France within the French Union. The significance of the loss of these territories from France to Britain was revealed upon the surrender of France in 1940. Suddenly, both Australia and the United States had borders with satellite states of Vichy France, forcing those nations to make urgent engagement decisions. Had they not, Britain would have faced Hitler alone and thus the early loss of Colonies was in the famous words of Winston Churchill “a cloud with a silver lining”.Winston Churchill

Changes

In 1989, in the climactic scene in an old cemetery, the Warlock (having collected the final set of pages) assembled the Grand Grimoire learning the name of God - the backwards utterance of which will lead to the uncreation of the world. The witch-hunter Giles Redferne discovers that the mysterious figure who propelled them into 20th Century Los Angeles was Immanuel. God, seeing the wickedness which had entered man's heart, was saddened, and decided to undo creation to destroy mankind. Pursuit

In 2002, scientists investigated a significant fresh impact crater in a remote part of Siberia. The cause was presumed to have been caused by meteoroid or perhaps a 50-100m comet nucleus. Kosmopoisk sent an expedition in May 2003 led by V. Chernobrov which reached the presumed impact point about 50 km from Vitimsky settle point. The situation there looked similar to that of the Tunguska river after the Tunguska event in 1908. Snow and water samples were analysed and found to contain an abnormal amount of tritium, as well as radioactive isotopes of cobalt and caesium. In 1940, Commander of the British Eighth Army Colonel T.E. Lawrence arrived in North Africa where he defeated Rommel's Afrika Corps and Italian allies. This incredible story is recounted in the semi-factual book Loose Cannon. The essence of Susan Shwartz's masterpiece is the book within the book, 'The Sphinx Lies Heavy' in which Lawrence does not survive his 1935 motorcycle accident. Instead the incompetent Command Claude Auchenlech is defeated and the Wehrmacht cross the Suez Canal to link up with Operation Barbarossa.

In 1992, George Zebrowski published Let Time Shape. Greatness

Alternate Historian says, work on the new, richer format for TIAH 2008 is now complete. Both the web site design & also the new HTML code generator are now settled. So now the stories are being written & we've made 1.36% progress (30 out of 2204) as of very late last night. Entries including the post date you want should be emailed to the Alternate Historian.

In 1989, the Warlock and the witch-hunter Giles Redferne arrived in Los Angeles. The warlock had been sentenced to death in 1691 for his activities, but a mysterious figure had propelled them forward in time to the 20th century. The Warlock was tasked with assembling the three separated sets of pages of The Grand Grimoire, a Satanic book that will reveal the "true" name of God (the backwards utterance of which will lead to the uncreation of the world).Pursuit

Rudolph Giuliani"We do not let fear make our decisions for us. We choose to live in freedom."
~ Rudolph Giuliani, United Nations General Assembly, New York, 1 October 2001

Before he tried to exploit 911 to gain an emergency third term. Opponents viewed the extension as an unprecedented power grab and as a means for Giuliani to profit politically from the sudden, international prominence of the role of New York City Mayor.

Voices were also countering the refrain that it was the mayor who had pulled the city together. "You didn't bring us together, our pain brought us together and our decency brought us together. We would have come together if Bozo was the mayor", said civil-rights activist Al Sharpton, in a statement largely supported by Fernando Ferrer, one of three main candidates for the mayoralty at the end of 2001. "He was a power-hungry person", Sharpton also said. A synopsis of Giulianin's post-911 statements are detailed at Wikipedia

In 2007, Matthew Tocheri of the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC confirmed that the diminutive humanoid fossil found on a remote island in Indonesia represents a new species, and not a modern human with a growth defect, according to scientists who published new evidence on Thursday. The study of the wrist bones of the Homo floresiensis fossil known as "the Hobbit" - found that their wrists were far more primitive than either Neanderthals or modern humans. This suggests they were an entirely different species that branched off before the origin of a group of hominids that would include Neanderthals and modern humans, said the authors of a study published in the journal Science.Hobbits
Since its discovery on the Indonesian island of Flores in 2003, the fossil, known as LB1, has become the subject of intense scrutiny and debate in the scientific community.

The fossil became known as "the Hobbit" in the press, after the diminutive characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings semi-factual novel.

Members of Durin's folk contributed to the debate. Oral records that traced back to the Broadbeam Dwarves of Belegost indicated that Hobbits had perished during the Fourth Age. Carbon dating tests continue at the time of writing.
