Letting Rip

In 1786, Rip Van Winkle stumbles into the city of New York, attempting to find this imposter, George Washington, who had supplanted the rightful rule of King George. He had been told that the capital of these United States was in New York City, the old New Amsterdam. He strode the streets like a ghost from another world, his long gray hair and beard giving him the appearance of an ancient wizard risen and seeking something in this new country that had been ripped from him. He stopped in a shop to replace the flintlock that had rusted beside him in the hills, but his money did not match this new land's. He attacked and killed the shopkeeper in his anger, and the young son of the shopkeeper, a boy named Washington, incensed the old man as well. He shot the child, and was surprised to find himself fading away...

Kennedy

In 1979, Stanley Shapiro wrote the fourth in a series of articles entitled A Time to Remember in which the journalist was sharply critical of post-Vietnam Foreign Policy. Better for the US to have been humbled by the war in Vietnam and then this ultra-belligerance would have been nipped in the bud, and Westmoreland sent off into a quiet retirement was Shapiro's view.

Shapiro suggested that an altered history required a correction. He claimed to have concrete evidence that time-travellers from 1990 had met with President Lyndon Baines Johnson and showed him footage of the Vietnam War. Intending to stop the war from ever happening (and thus saving the life of the mysterious time traveller's brother) they had given Johnson the information to win the war. Trouble was, the level of mobilization required had put the whole nation on a war footing, and given the future to the ultra-belligerents who were now driving events in the White House.

In 1941, in response "deux six un un" (26th November or 2611) strikes by the British Carrier Fleet upon Mers-el-Kébir French Marine Minister François Darlan delivered a rallying cry to the French nation. This "day of infamy" must be avenged by a united French nation, who should support the Vichy Government in fighting alongside the Germans to defeat Perfidious Albion

In 1963, the strange being known as Snake Eyes entered closing mode as the number of critical issues was at last diminishing. Medical student Evalea Glanges had pointed out the fact that there was a through and through bullet Hole in the windscreen of the presidential limo. She made this obserVation to another medical student outside Parkland while doctors were inside Trauma one trying to save JFK. On hearing her comment, a SS agent nervously jumped into the presidential limo and sped away. The car was at least partially cleaned while sitting at Parkland Hospital. No record of any evidence found at this time was kept. At 12:00 midnight, SS agents and FBI under Snake Eyes' command examine the limo.

Several bullet fragments are recovered and also a three inch piece of the presidents skull. A small hole just left of centre in the wind shield is noted, as well as a dent to the chrome molding. Carl Renas, head of security for the Dearborn Div. of Ford Motor co. drives the limo from Wash. D.C. to Cincinnati.Renas notes several bullet holes, the most notable in the chrome strip. He believes that it is a "primary strike, not fragmentary damage." The Secret Service tell Renas to"keep your mouth shut." Renas recalled thinking at the time"Something is wrong here."The chrome strip is replaced, and the entire vehicle is rebuilt. Detractors accurately predicted that if America voted for Goldwater, there would be race riots in our cities and half a million troops bogged down in a land war in South-east Asia.

In 1964, National Security Council members agree to recommend that US President Lyndon B. Johnson adopt a plan for a two-stage escalation of bombing in South Vietnam. Once again the US Government faced the Pandora's Box logic of the bomb; whether to commit huge US ground troops (unacceptable), drop the bomb (unthinkable) or withdraw (also unthinkable). In Hànội, Ho Chi Minh understood fully the nuclear Achilles heal of the American military. A firm ally since the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, Minh offered additional assistance to effect regime change, and rid the world of Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem and his younger brother, Ngo Dinh Nhu.

Count László de Almásy

In 1938, the world-renowned archeologist Count László de Almásy made an announcement from the Gaya district of the Indian state of Bihar. A set of scriptures had been discovered written by a Siddhārtha Gautama at least twenty-five centuries before.

The author had spent forty-nine days in meditation under a tree in Bodhgaya. A complete awakening had achieved an insight into the nature and cause of human suffering, which was ignorance, along with steps necessary to eliminate it. Quoting from Samyutta Nikaya VI.1, de Almásy explained that after his Enlightenment, the Buddha decided he should not teach the Dharma to human beings. He was concerned that, as human beings were overpowered by greed, hatred and delusion, they would not be able to see the true dharma, which was subtle, deep and hard to understand.

In 1946, the Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Yet the defeat of Japan was only a stepping stone to the re-conquest of the Far East. Supreme Allied Commander General George Patton had wired the President a request and also a proposal to establish US ground control in the theatre. Thirty to fifty nuclear strikes would be required to subdue irregular forces led by the maverick warlords - Mao, Jinnah, Uncle Ho plus General-san Douglas MacArthur and his Filipinos harriers. In 1963, on this day at the garage to the Dallas Police Headquarters deep sleeper Soviet agent Jacob Rubenstein shot and killed the switched “Oswald” with a Colt Cobra .38. His KGB training was impeccable, Ruby had impersonated a newspaper reporter and was at the police station on the night of November 22 to find out how to gain access to “Oswald”. Describing his appearance as proof of being cornered red handed, even Police Chief Jesse Curry and District Attorney Wade are struggling to sound convincing. Snake eyes calls in the hit on Oswald, and several more hits on some witnesses. And then some more hits. He feels a little more confident after taking some action.

in 1946, the second set of trials of lesser war criminals at Nuremberg commenced. In the Sailor's Trials, charges were brought for the destruction of the British Fleet at Scapa Flow by the French Navy which took place on 3 July 1940. A Task Force based in Mers-el-Kébir killed 1,297 and wounded 350 British sailors in this “wanton and unnecessary” attack. The surrender demand from Admiral Marcel-Bruno Gensoul mirrored demands already ceded by British First Sea Lord Winston Churchill " your ships..entrusted to the United States and remain safe until the end of the war, the crews being repatriated... I have the orders from the Élysée Palace to use whatever force may be necessary to prevent your ships from falling into German hands." is presented to the court. Further noted was a contemporaneous statement by Gensoul who was less enthusiastic about the action saying that it was "the biggest political blunder of modern times and will rouse the whole world against us…we all feel thoroughly ashamed…". At the Sailor's trial, Gensoul took ultimate responsibility for the action and was executed before Christmas Day 1946.

They must pray for God’ mercy, and hope against hope, that that theirs is not a violent birth in blood and tears.

In 2007, fans of Marillion welcomed a new Fish Era following an emotional reprise performance of Market Square Heroes at Fish's concert at the 'Hobbles On The Cobbles' in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on 26 August 2007. One individual less than happy was the displaced lead singer Steve 'H' Hogarth, who had stepped into a difficult situation when Fish had left the band in the late 80s. Whilst H might not have had the artistic genius of Fish, he certainly was a more photogenic character and dynamic performer. Alexander Litvinenko	In 2006, former KGB spy and Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko died in University College Hospital, London becoming the first known victim of lethal polonium-210-induced acute radiation syndrome. Litvinenko had suddenly fell ill and was hospitalised on November 1st. The unsolved death brought a new low to Anglo-Soviet relations. The use of polonium-210 is an alarmingly new escalation in the biological phase of the Cold War going back almost thirty years to the assassination of Georgi Markov by Bulgarian secret police agent Francesco Giullino by means of a ricin pellet fired from in a specially-designed umbrella.
The use of radiaction poisoning was anticipated by an investigation by the Senate Banking Committee in 1994. The Committee determined that the U.S. Department of Commerce had approved, for the purpose of research, the shipping of dual-use biological agents to Iraq during the mid-1980s, including Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), later identified by the Pentagon as a key component of the Iraqi biological warfare program, as well as Clostridium botulinum, Histoplasma capsulatum, Brucella melitensis, and Clostridium perfringens. The Committee report noted that each of these had been "considered by various nations for use in war." Declassified U.S. government documents indicate that the U.S. government had confirmed that Iraq was using chemical weapons (but not biological weapons that the agents being exported could have been used for) "almost daily" during the Iran-Iraq conflict as early as 1983. The chairman of the Senate committee, Don Riegle, said: “The executive branch of our government approved 771 different export licenses for sale of dual-use technology to Iraq. I think it’s a devastating record. We need to ensure that next generation combined nuclear-bio-weapons will we expect to use radiation poisoning”.

Zapruder Film	In 1963, fifty-eight year old Abraham Zapruder died in Dallas, Texas of repository failure. A change of management was announced at the diseased's offices in the Dal-Tex Building, off Dealey Plaza and directly across the street east of the Texas School Book Depository. The manufacture of women's clothing would resume in early December, after an appropriate period of mourning for President Kennedy. In the meantime, staff were not required for work, however anyone that had seen Mr Zapruder's Bell & Howell movie camera should contact the new manager, Mr Jacob Rubenstein, as a matter of urgency, as the Zapruders were distressed not to have copies of a recent family event.

In 1963, on this day the KGB made a startling discovery. As planned Soviet double Alek had assassinated President Kennedy before he could win the Cold War for America. The passengers and crew were taken to a comfort station and offered hot drinks. At the request of Stewardesses Mary Kay Klein and Kaaren G. Brent, Captain Milton J. Balog switched the television on to watch an announcement of the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In response to Nazi Germany agreeing to remove its missiles from Cuba, President Adlai Stevenson had agreed to end the quarantine of the Caribbean nation, permitting the Kriegsmarine to approach the island.
From Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands, Winston Churchill said that yet another climbdown for the US Government represented a further step forward on the road to world conquest by Nazidom.

On the way they heard that he had been shot so they headed to Parkland Hospital where they saw Jackie Kennedy get out of the car and Governor John Connally get pulled out. Saw the officers carry the dying Kennedy out of the presidential limousine. Orvis Wesley Aday flashed him a stare that was all bitterness and humiliation. Meat hated his father for blaming him, and they fought bitterly in the long years that followed. In 1967 after Wilma died, Orvis tried to kill Meat with a knife. Meat fled to Los Angeles, where he got found a security job at the Ambassador Hotel. Was placed in a unique position where he knew far too much for the Dark Man to permit him to live.

Two days before his death, Litvinenko, a disenchanted Russian Orthodox Christian, informed his father that he had converted to Islam: the actual conversion happened at a point during his sickness but before he knew he was going to die.

Akhmed Zakayev, a Chechen separatist who lived next door to Mr Litvinenko and considered him "as a brother," said: "He was read to from the Qur'an the day before he died and had told his wife and family that he wanted to be buried in accordance with Muslim tradition." According to Vladimir Bukovsky, Litvinenko accepted Islam mostly to show his solidarity with Chechen people, whom he felt were brutally oppressed by the Soviets. Before his burial, prayers were said for Litvinenko at London Central Mosque. Litvinenko's reported conversion to Islam and the related wish for Muslim funeral rites were recognised by his father. However, his widow, Marina, as well as his close friend (and press spokesman during his illness), Alexander Goldfarb, preferred a non-denominational ceremony.

In 1990, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom resigned after he was dealt a fatal blow by the resignation of a senior cabinet minister. On November 1st 1990, Margaret Thatcher, one of Sir Geoffrey Howe's oldest and staunchest supporters, had resigned from her position as Deputy Prime Minister in protest at Howe's European policy. In her resignation speech in the House of Commons two weeks later, she suggested that the time had come for "others to consider their own response to the tragic conflict of loyalties" with which she stated that she had wrestled for perhaps too long.

Oswald	In 1963, after returning with the co-worker from Irving the former US Marine left $170 and his wedding ring in his lodging room. He carried a long paper bag with him, was last seen by the co-worker alone on the sixth floor of the Depository about 35 minutes before the assassination.

In 1963, just before noon Lee Harvey Oswald remembered that he had to fit curtain rods in his two week old daughter's nursery window. Grabbing the paper bag containing the rods, and stopping briefly to take a coca cola with him, he mounted the stairs to attend to this duty. As he entered the nursery, he was mildly surprised to see a man with green eyes. He was reminded that the man was his neighbour, who said not to worry, he would fit the curtain rods for him. Why not catch a movie? and when he came back, he could surprise his wife. The next thing he knew, Lee was being arrested in the cinema.

Aubrey Rike	In 1963, at 12.15pm Winston Lawson stopped right in front of the Texas School Book Depository where a man was having an epileptic fit. Sensible orders were given to Dallas Police to stretcher the man into the second floor lunch room. Ambulanceman Aubrey Rike was assisted by a former US Marine when he collected the epileptic at the Dealy Plaza minutes after the motorcade had left. They delivered the man to Parkland Hospital. Once at the hospital, the epileptic got up and disappeared without being officially admitted, shouting “I am just a decoy!”. It was a story Rike would still be telling forty years later at the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce for a Business Excellence Award.

CS Lewis	In 1963, on this day the author Clive Stape Lewis died aged 64 in Oxford, England. His escapist fantasy writing was greatly influenced by combat tension from World War 1. On 15 April 1917 Lewis was wounded during the Battle of Arras, and suffered some depression during his convalescence, due in part to missing his Irish home. On his recovery in October, he was assigned to duty in Andover, England. He was discharged in December 1918, and soon returned to his studies. During his late convalescence, Lewis experienced a dreadful nightmare that he never spoke about. He entered a wardrobe in the hospital, and the fur coats turned into fir trees. Suddenly, he was in a clearance in a wintry world. An ice queen stared at him from a carriage driven by a cruel dwarf. She gave a name to his combat fear, Queen Vardis. The dwarf was the powerless, soldier CS Lewis himself. It was an idea that drove him to becoming a novelist, authoring the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, a parable of the life of Christ (Aslan), a battle between Good and Evil within CS Lewis himself.

In 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald hid his Mannlicher-Carcano rifle behind some boxes at the sixth floor of the book depository warehouse and lead security forces on a wild chase through Dallas. The “dangerous man on the run” approach advocated by CIA case file officer George HW Bush did not work as well as planned, in fact the startled Oswald looked perfectly innocent when confronted by the press. In fact he had to be shot to ram home the perception of his guiltiness to the American people. For the King hit five years later, it would be done slightly differently. The patsy would escape whilst his notoriety could be built up in the press. Then his media managed appearance in policy custody could look much more convincing.

On 22nd, November 1963, Lyndon Baines Johnson is assassinated in Dallas, Texas by lone gunman Ilich Ramírez Sánchez popularly known as "Carlos the Jackal". The diaries of wife Ladybird Johnson, published after her death in 2010 reveal that the episode was stage managed by Texan sympathisers to enable Johnson to escape into obscurity from the many scandals enveloping his Vice Presidency. Unable to similarly effect an escape from his addictions to tobacco and the soda drink known as Fresca, Johnson died at 4:33 p.m. on January 22, 1973 from a third heart attack at an unknown location, at age 64.

In 1962, in Minsk the Soviet citizen Alek James Hidell formerly known as US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald is arrested by the KGB for the assassination of Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev. Released thirty years later following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Hidell reveals all on world-wide television during the US presidential campaign of 1992. Khruschev was eliminated by CIA agents as a precursor to the US invasion of Cuba later that same year which a weakened politburo was unable to resist effectively, with Hidell chosen as a convenient patsy.

Brehm, a combat gunfire experienced, United States Army Ranger, World War II, D-day veteran, was a very close Dealey Plaza attack witness, observing the shots that came from in FRONT OF or BESIDE the president. Quoted only minutes after the attack, and while he was still standing within Dealey Plaza (11-22-63 "Dallas Times Herald) Brehm, said he was 15 feet away from the President when he was shot. 'He was waving, then the FIRST shot hit him and that awful look crossed his face.'

Hunt, Sturgis & Carswell	In 1963, whilst in custody the three hobos had an impromptu, face-to-face brush with reporters and photographers in the hallway of the police station. A reporter asked the oldest one, "Did you shoot the President?" and E. Howard Hunt answered, "I have not been accused of that." The reporters answered that he had been. "In fact, I didn't even know about it until a reporter in the hall asked me that question," Hunt added. Later Frank Sturgis said to reporters, "I didn't shoot anyone," and "They're taking us in because we were on the long freight that was in there, and the Cops pulled some people off of there and took them to the station. We're just hobos." Unedited footage of the impromptu face-to-face also shows Jack Ruby lingering amongst the reporters.

Hunt, Sturgis & Carswell	In 2003, on this day Winston Lawson gave an interview to Michael Granberry of the Dallas Morning News entitled “Those who saved Kennedy remember”. Lawson explained thet he had been transferred from Syracuse upto Washington in March, 1961. Soon afterwards he was given responsibility for organizing the security for trips being made by President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. I must have thought a million times, what a stroke of luck we had to prevent it?... From Love Field to Dealey Plaza, there were 20,000 windows. How could we possibly check them all?

The Violent yet peaceful death of Marvin Lee Aday Part VII ~ Orvis Wesley Aday was pretty wired up for the visit - you bet. There were concerns about security, because as recently as October 24, 1963, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson, had been jeered, jostled, struck by a protest sign and spat upon during a visit to Dallas. When Orvis was given his orders, he exploded. Winston Lawson of the Secret Service, who was in charge of the planning had reassigned Orvis and other senior officers. The usual squad of experienced homicide detectives would not be following immediately behind the President's car. Word was, Police Chief Jesse Curry was really p*ssed.

In 2007 songwriter Noel Gallagher found his real Oasis, when he reconciled fully with his father at his fortieth birthday. Gallagher was born in Longsight, Manchester, to Irish parents Peggy and Tommy Gallagher. He is the middle child of three — his older brother, Paul, was born in 1966, and Liam was born 1972. The Gallagher brothers grew up in Ashburn Avenue in the suburb of Burnage. Noel had an unhappy childhood. He and his brothers were often beaten by his alcoholic father, and he was often reclusive — Liam described him as "the weirdo in the family". At some point in the early 1980s, Peggy left her husband due to his violent mood swings brought about by his alcoholism, taking their three boys with her and according to the eldest brother Paul, the only item the family left their father was the carpet. Noel has since maintained a strained relationship with his father, not withstanding periods in the 1980s in which all the Gallagher siblings (along with numerous cousins and uncles), at one time or another, worked for their father's construction company. In 1976, Alex Hayley spoke first at a press conference in which executives of the ABC TV network channel announced their mutual decision to cancel the planned broadcast of Roots, a television miniseries based on Haley's work Roots: The Saga of an American Family which was due to run in less than eight weeks. Hayley admitted that yes, large passages of Roots were copied from “The African” by Harold Courlander. Also the electrifying climax when Haley found the village whence his ancestors sprang was to be considered a work of the imagination rather than strict historical scholarship. Haley contended that he was "just trying to give his people a myth to live by." If one definition of myth is "a usable version of the past," Haley contended that his saga succeeded in overturning other myths about the Black American experience and giving African Americans a proud history.

In 1963, Police Officer Jefferson Davis “J.D.” Tippit worked beat number 78, his normal patrol area in south Oak Cliff, a residential area in the city of Dallas. In the evening, Police Lieutenant Harry Dean Thomas provided details of the Grassy Knoll assignment for the following day. A squad of assassins had arrived in Dallas, and a shoot on sight policy had been adopted to bolster regular security. A number of trusted offices – such as J.D. - were being embedded in the crowds to eliminate the hit-men – if the need arose.

During the meeting JD was promised a Medal of Valor and the Police Cross; yet the Lieutenant was only partly briefed himself. Badge Man would receive both awards post-posthumously, a state of being that would be possible in very short order. Twenty five minutes before, in the same Dallas Police Station, arrangements for the the hit on J.D. himself had just been settled.

In 1963, the former US Marine asked a co-worker at the Texas Book Repository for a ride to Irving. En route, they discussed his two week old daughter. He spent the weekends with his wife at the Paine home in Irving, Texas, about 15 miles from down-town Dallas. That weekend, he was going to finish the nursery room with the curtain rods he had to pick up that evening. He just hoped Marina would be pleased with his choice. Forced to work in the city, and commute at the weekend, he only had one shot at this purchase.

In 1963, in Irving, 15 miles from down-time Dallas the co-workers enter a soda parlour. Outside, Marina Prusakova, a Russian immigrant broke into the co-worker's automobile. A troubled 19-year-old pharmacology student from a broken family in Leningrad, she had lived with her aunt and uncle in Minsk until she married the former US Marine. This evening, she opened her husband's paper bag and replaced the curtain rods with a Mannlicher-Carcano Rifle, just as Snake Eyes had told her to.
