Alternate Historian's Note: I promised you a collection, and we are working on it – but real life is getting in the way. Fortunately, the worst part of the real-life problems we were having has been resolved. I have found new employment (yay!). We're going to aim for an April release for the collection, and will make more announcements about it as we draw closer to actually making that a reality. And, speaking of April, our Guest Historian, Stephen Payne, suggested that it was time for a contest, so we're going to have an April Fool's Day Contest! Email us up to 3 entries for an alternate April 1st and we will post the best 10, with your own credit and link to your website (if you have one). My lovely Co-Historian says that if we can get 30 entrants, we can offer an ultimate winner a complimentary TIAH mug, but we only have 2 entrants so far! Get researching those alternate histories now, folks! The deadline is March 29th.

in 2003, President Gore of the US announces the capture of Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. Although the announcement is greeted with snores by his political opponents, experts in anti-terrorism declare the capture of the head of Al-Qaeda to be a highly significant step in reducing world-wide terrorism. Several neo-conservative pundits say that Gore should go further in addressing Islamic fundamentalism, and move against Saddam Hussein in Iraq. President Gore points out that Hussein has no actual ties to terrorist groups other than some of the more extreme Palestinian organizations, but they have been making this argument since the 90's, and don't let the facts stand in their way. John McCain even uses it in his unsuccessful presidential bid in 2004.

in 1891, the call goes out for volunteers to swell the Union Army's ranks and take back Kansas. Thousands of men answer the call and join up. In Kansas, 'Sockless' Simpson's troops stand guard across the state's borders and drill themselves to readiness. Just across those borders, General Anthony Franklin keeps his men ready and tries to locate a telegraph office to report in his location. “There's one every block back east,” he complained to Major Wainwright, “but the 'wild west' hides theirs so you can't find them.” Major Wainwright was thoroughly sick of the general at this point, but was still unwilling to resign his commission. He also wanted revenge against Simpson, and that kept him going as they tromped through Missouri's wilderness.

in 1999, on the occasion of Shakespeare's birth and death, and just a few days after his first anniversary on the throne, King Arthur II declares a general amnesty for the Windsors if they will return to Great Britain. “We are willing to forgo our righteous vengeance against the family of the false queen, Elizabeth Windsor, and grant them peace and safety within our borders,” he says in the statement at Stratford-on-Avon. “This is no time for the British family to be split.” Although it seems like a totally magnanimous gesture, it does quell the minor pro-Windsor factions in the country, giving Arthur a united country as he prepares his Templars for war against the Central European Empire. His new queen, Lady Gwen, gives up one of her homes for the Windsors. The former royal family, unsurprisingly, does not take King Arthur up on his amnesty. Prime Minister Merl Myrddin uses the offer of amnesty to persuade the rest of the Commonwealth to recognize Arthur as King and increase the power that can be brought to bear against the CEE.

In 2165 the position of Michael Version7 Punk was a distant second in the cyberspace game of basket ball played out in the Venice Beach “skin”. Michael would describe himself as white. It was not the same definition that could be applied to a seventh century Welshman. White was a primary ethnicity that Michael was fanatical about. He spent a great deal of money on peroxide to sustain this fiction, over two trillion new dollars in the past six months.

After(cont.)
The crack of another gunshot startled them all, and Jake shielded the president with his body. Eli and Kevin appeared at the top of the stairs, firing at something Jake couldn't see. They were both bleeding, now. “We need to get the hell outta here,” Kevin shouted down at them.
“Move,” Jake shouted at the president and Janice. He ran up the stairs and stuck his head out long enough to spot the two men shooting at them from around the corners at the end of the hallway. He took a lucky shot and dropped one of them, then yelled at the other, “Give up now, and you don't have to die.” The bullet whizzing by his ear gave the man's answer. Jake looked at Eli, who was white-faced and splattered heavily with what Jake assumed was his own blood. Kevin wasn't in much better shape, but at least he looked like he only had one wound. “On three, we haul ass down there, firing everything we got at that fool,” he told them. “He's goin' down.” They nodded quickly, and he counted off, “One, two – three!” They charged down, Jake in the lead, pumping bullets into the corner that the guard was hiding behind. They stopped only when they saw the man's body fall in front of them, crimson with his own spilled blood. Jake shouted back at the stairwell, “Janice, get the president up here, quick. We're moving!”
“I think that's all of them,” Kevin wheezed. He was holding his side, vainly trying to staunch the rapid flow of blood that was pumping out of his wound. He was holding Eli up with his other arm.
Jake said, “We still need to get the hell outta here.” He pulled Eli from Kevin's grip and propped him up. When Janice and the president joined them, he said, “Y'all help Bradley, I'll get Eli.” He slapped Kevin lightly in the face to get his attention. “Don't you die on me, Bradley. You ain't loaned me any money, yet.”
As President Bush took him by the arm, Kevin smiled and said, “Hey, I'm a millionaire and I met the president. That was all I ever wanted to do.”
President Bush said, “I'd prefer it if you didn't die just yet, Bradley. There's enough dead people in my house.”
“Sorry, Mr. President,” Kevin muttered.
As quickly as they could, they lumbered out of the ranch house, heading off down the field towards the creek bed. Janice shouted at Jake, “Hey! Why don't we just take one of their cars?”
Jake looked back the car port. There were plenty of cars sitting there. “We don't have any keys.”
“You think I don't know how to hotwire a car?”
“Let's go.” They changed course and piled everyone into a large sedan. Janice got under the steering wheel and worked for several minutes.
The engine roared to life and she popped into the driver's seat. “Yeah, baby.” She threw the car into gear and took off down the road. She came up to the gate at the edge of the property and just ripped through it. The grill took some damage and the windshield cracked a little, but the car was still running, so she kept it moving.
Eli's groans grew in intensity in the back seat as Jake attempted to keep him alive as best he could. “We need a hospital,” Jake shouted to Janice.
“The nearest one is a couple hours away,” she told him. She looked into the rear-view mirror and saw Eli's face. His lips were completely without color, and his eyes were unfocused. She locked eyes with Jake and shook her head.
He nodded and turned his attention back to Eli. “You gonna make it, Eli. You're a hero, now. Maybe you'll finally get laid.” A slight smile curled Eli's lips. “That's it, you concentrate on that.” He looked over at Kevin, whose lips were now sprinkled with a little dark blood. “Bradley, you ain't got nothing but a scratch, so I don't wanna hear no complainin' from you.”
“Yes, Sergeant,” Kevin whispered.
Janice put the gas pedal to the floor and tried as hard as she could to keep the car on the road.

“Have we got the air conditioner on?” Kevin's body was racked with shudders again. Jake took off his jacket and laid it across him.
Jake looked up at the front seat and asked, “How much farther?”
“Maybe 20 miles.”
Jake turned his attention back to Eli. At least Kevin was able to feel cold. Eli had stopped talking about 15 minutes before, and was now completely unresponsive when Jake tried to rouse him. He felt the young man's neck again and waited. The pulse was even weaker than the last time he had checked, and harder to find. He didn't think there was any point in trying to save Eli anymore, so he turned to Kevin and checked his pulse. It was a little weak, but it was there.
“Wish I hadn't given up drinking now,” the president said from the front seat.
“Me, too,” Janice muttered. She was driving a good hundred miles an hour, and had a death grip on the steering wheel. She had almost cracked up at least three times, but wasn't slowing down. This was worse than the drive in the dark two days ago, because there were a couple of people dying in her back seat. She felt that her pounding heart was more than making up for their weakly pumping ones. She wanted to take her hand off the wheel long enough to wipe off the sweat that was dripping down into her eyes, but didn't dare.
There was a gasp from the back seat, and Janice nearly lost control. Eli's body was trying to keep alive, and failing. Spasms ripped through his body, and Jake tried to hold him down. It took several minutes, but the jerking finally stopped, and the last trickles of blood leaked out of his mouth. Jake pressed his hand onto Eli's carotid for a few minutes, but there was nothing there. “He's gone,” Jake said, quietly.
Janice sobbed. She hadn't been that close to Eli, but he and Mike had always been dependable for all their quirks. The president patted her shoulder comfortingly, and she regained control. “We can still save Kevin,” she said. “Just a few more miles.” The lights of Austin were blazing up towards them, and she kept her foot down hard on the accelerator.

Steph woke up to pounding on her door. She shouted, “Who is it?” She looked around for that gun that Mike had left her while she did it.
“It's me,” Mike said from the other side of the door. “Quick, let us in.”
Steph went over to the door and reached a hand out to the lock. She paused, then looked through the peephole, first. She saw Mike and Joan. She assumed that George was there, too, just out of sight. She opened the door and asked, “What is it?”
Mike and the kids rushed in and Mike shut the door behind them, latching it and throwing the deadbolt. “Guard's going through the hotel; the front's moved up to us. We don't have to worry about going around them.”
“Are we safe here?”
“No,” Mike said. “We need to get the hell out.”
“Let's get to the car, then.”
“They'll take Mike if they see him,” George said. “I saw 'em take three guys looked even scrawnier'n him.”
“Hey,” Mike said, offended.
“They'll probably take you, too,” Joan said, looking at her mother. “Maybe even me. I think they're pretty desperate.”
“Crap.” She peeked through the curtains outside. She saw two large military trucks in the parking lot. In their backs were civilians, holding rifles and looking very nervous. “Maybe we need to be ballsy about it.”
“What do you mean?” Mike was definitely unwilling to leave the room.
“Follow my lead.” She got her clothes on and led them out of the room. Reluctantly, the other three followed her as she walked straight up to one of the soldiers. She asked him, “You looking for people?”
“Yes, ma'am,” the young man told her. “Hop on the back of that truck and they'll give you a rifle.”
“Got one already, and enough for my boy, here, too,” she said, pointing back at Mike. “Our SUV's better'n that truck, too. You need scouts? We can go anywhere in that thing.” She pointed at their car, and the soldier looked the vehicle over.
“All right. We need people with that kinda attitude.” He took out a map of the area and pointed out a line that had been drawn about 10 miles outside of the town. “This is where the enemy's advancing.” He pointed at a red circle just outside of the town. “This is our command post.” He showed her a thin line indicating a road. “This road will take you around the enemy line. See what you can find out, then report back to our command post.”
“You got it, sir,” she said, saluting smartly. He returned her salute, then handed her the map and returned to collecting other people from the hotel. She hurried them off to the SUV, whispering, “Try not to smile.”

Senator and President-elect Kerry was very tall. Steph felt like she was a little girl standing next to him as they watched Mike present the material they had brought with them. When Mike was done, the senator said, “We need to get this into some national broadcast.” He turned to an aide and told her, “See what you can do. We still have those contacts at CBS, right?”
“Yes, sir,” she told him, scooping up the disks and tape from Mike. “I'll get him on the cell and see if they can start cutting into the emergency broadcasts.”
“Excellent,” Kerry said, turning back to Steph and Mike. “It's amazing that you were able to get all this together, and then get it to us. Thank you.”
“Do you think you'll be able to help our friends in Crawford?” Steph looked up into the tired face of the older man, and he looked around at his command personnel in the tent.
He asked one of the military men standing around, “Can we feasibly make a move on Crawford?”
“Probably wouldn't be a bad idea,” a man wearing colonel's markings said. “We can finally give those reporters with us something to film. Showing Bush's ranch still standing might not be bad propaganda.”
“How quickly can we get there?”
“Let me check.” He pulled a couple of other men over to a corner and spoke with them quietly.
Mike had been stealing glances at Kerry the entire time they had been brought into his presence, and finally asked the question that had obviously been gnawing at him. “How do we know you're the real Senator Kerry? I mean, I found an expert to identify the Bush double; do I need to find one to do the same to you?”
Several people looked awkwardly away from the Senator and the conspiracy nut. Steph smiled and shrugged when Senator Kerry looked questioningly at her. After a moment in which he was obviously thinking of a careful way to say it, he replied, “I don't have a body double, I'm afraid. I'm one of a kind.”
That didn't satisfy Mike. He narrowed his eyes and took a good look at Kerry, then said, “I'll be keeping an eye on you.”
Kerry decided to ignore that, and turned to Steph. “It's going to be unsafe for you and your children until we can take down the coup leaders. If you'd like, we can send you back to New Mexico with an escort.”
Mike's eyes lit up. “Can we go to Roswell?”
Steph could see the massive effort that the senator exerted not to roll his eyes. “Of course. I'll get some people to organize your trip.”
“Thank you, sir,” Steph said, shaking his hand. “I just hope this'll all be over soon.”
“We all do, Mrs. Morris.” The colonel returned to his side and Kerry looked at the clipboard that was handed to him.
“If we send a small team, they can be there by lunch,” the colonel told him. “If you want a large force, it'll be there tomorrow.”
“Quicker's probably better,” Steph spoke up. “Our friends might need help.”
The senator nodded. “Send the small team, but make sure they have one of the reporters with them, and document everything.” He looked at Steph's hopeful face, and added, “Tell them that speed is of the essence.”
“Yes, sir,” the colonel said, taking his clipboard back and walking off to organize the mission.
Mike, having barely contained himself during that exchange, broke in with, “Can we go to Roswell, now?”

in 1603, the female pope, Elizabeth I, of the Holy British Empire dies in London. In spite of initial trepidation at her rule, she turned out to be one of the greatest Popes the Empire had ever known, expanding Christendom across the oceans and onto all other known continents.

in 1765, the British Parliament passes the Quartering Act, establishing the rules under which British troops can be housed in the American and Canadian colonies. Outrage over the callous way that the mother country treats their property prompts many North Americans to begin thinking of severing their ties to the crown, although only the Canadians are successful.

in 1882, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow of the North American Confederation dies in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His Song of M’ch’Ch’mai, about the first Mlosh explorers of the continent, is still hailed today as one of the greatest of the 19th century’s writings.

in 1944, Orde Wingate, a British convert and general in the Greater Zionist Resistance, is shot down by German Reich Luftwaffe over Burma. Wingate had been a natural at guerilla tactics, and joined the G.Z.R. after his own government proved unwilling to fight the rising fascist movement.

in 1964, the Rosenberg half-dollar is issued. Commemorating Comrade President Joel Rosenberg, slain in Dallas two years before, the coin proves wildly popular and the comrade’s face becomes the permanent symbol on the half-dollar the next year.

in 1993, American troops occupy San Salvador, El Salvador. After this small nation falls to the Constitutionalist President Ralph Sheridan, most of Central America surrenders, and South America’s nations brace for war. Rosenberg Half-Dollar Issued

March 24th, 2005

in 1603, the female pope, Elizabeth I, of the Holy British Empire dies in London. In spite of initial trepidation at her rule, she turned out to be one of the greatest Popes the Empire had ever known, expanding Christendom across the oceans and onto all other known continents.

in 1882, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow of the North American Confederation dies in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Wingate had been a natural at guerilla tactics, and joined the G.Z.R. after his own government proved unwilling to fight the rising fascist movement.

in 1952, after several days of rest, Mikhail von Heflin and his American lover, Velma Porter, decide that Europe wasn’t all they had hoped it would be, and start heading south. Miss Porter wants to see Africa, and the Baron just wants to leave his homeland behind as quickly as he can.

in 1964, the Rosenberg half-dollar is issued.

Brazil immediately seeks assistance from Portugal and asks the rest of Europe to help stem the onslaught of the Constitutionalists.

The Announcement

in 1891, the Farmers Council meets for the last time in Topeka, Kansas. Thaddeus Elridge is more than ready to dissolve the council and return to fight in the south. “This man has promised us Heaven and given us only Hell,” he thunders at 'Sockless' Jerry Simpson. “It is high time we stopped listening to his golden words and started fending for ourselves. I, for one, will deal with the Union.” He led about half of the council out of the chamber, a dissolute Simpson weakly calling after them to “hang together, lest we hang separately!” His invocation of Benjamin Franklin does nothing to sway Elridge's faction, and even those left in the council with him, with a couple of exceptions, withdraw their support. The Kansas rebellion has broken.

in 1999, through a spy in Prime Minister Kay Ector's staff, Queen Gwen learns that the prime minister is making contingency plans to get rid of her. She truly admires Ector's abilities, and doesn't want to just kill him. She decides to utilize the aid of her recently acquired ally, Walton Ray Thermopolous, whose specialty in the Illuminati had been turning liabilities into assets. Thermopolous accompanies Sir Kay on a brief junket to Greece, where he traps the prime minister in a small villa for some extensive brainwashing.

In 1994, the Envoy's crew of eight married scientists began a two hundred and fifty eight day space flight. Captain Michael Brant M.S., Cmdr D.F. Reserve was in Command and his primary objective was to found a human colony on Mars. His secondary objective involved Mary Jane Lyle Smith, a power technician who required anti-nausea medication for the later phase of the journey.

In 1945, in the devastated city of Tokyo an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared to the peace and reconciliation mission led by General-san Douglas MacArthur. Alongside the Blessed One was the ghost of a burnt Japanese child; a teddy bear's arm trailed on the scorched ground.

In 1999, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Sir Michael Jackson reluctantly complied with an order from his boss General Wesley Clark. Dubbed "Macho Jacko" by the British tabloid press, NATO troops blocked the runways of the Russian-occupied Pristina Airport, to isolate the Russian troops there.

By complying with General Clark's order, there was a chance the British troops under his command could have come into armed conflict with the Russians; doing this without prior orders from Britain could have led to his dismissal for gross insubordination. On the other hand, defying Clark would have meant disobeying a direct order from a superior NATO officer (Clark was a four-star general; Jackson only a three-star).

Reputedly saying "I'll start World War III for you", the point became irrelevant when the American government prevailed upon the Hungarians, Romanians, and Bulgarians to prevent the Russians from using their airspace to fly reinforcements in.

In 1760, medical science could safely be described as primitive throughout the post-pandemic world. The twenty-fourth century scientists who finally answered the Caucasoid question (CQ) were greatly advanced by comparison. Less than one hundred years later, CQ would become a routine academic examination question for ..
.. fifteen year-old molecular biology pupils. Put simply to those kids, the question was thus. a) Where did the Yersinia pestis enterobacteria originate? b) Why was Europe the only continent to be depopulated? c) What was the great secret that enabled the seven stowaways to survive the plague, and resettle the continent? During the 2498 matriculation examinations in New Rome, 98% of fifteen year old pupils answered all three questions correctly. After all, the answer was obvious. Once you knew it. For those seven stowaways who only had to consider part c) it was not necessarily obvious. Had they not of had days of nothing else to do, adrift in the Atlantic, they might never have seen the common sense answer for themselves. Things would have turned out a little different had they not.

In 2126, passengers of the London Underground train number AEJX57B arrived on the last leg of their world tour, in Sydney Shanty Town. The fallen Western Civilization that had emerged out of the post-Jihad epoch of the late twenty-first century was truly shocking to these late twentieth century commuters. They were witnessing ..
.. a degree of suffering they had only seen on Bob Geldorf's televised tours of Africa, and this time, the starving were their fellow Europeans.

In 1940, at Chequers the British Heads of State and Government were simply unable to accept the repulsion plan proposed by Aleister Crowley. Sensing this, Minister of Defence Winston Churchill adopted a different tactic to gain acceptance. Naval Intelligence Officer Ian Fleming and others proposed a disinformation plot in .. Ian Fleming

.. which Crowley would help an MI5 agent supply Nazi officials with faked horoscopes. Those horoscopes based on the Enochian Code would suggest false information about an alleged pro-German circle in Britain. This proposal really troubled British Prime Minister Oswald Mosley and King Edward VIII. Even after an endless supply of cigars and brandy the night before they still had not managed to achieve a state of mind where they could authorise the plan. And what if it was a trick to bring a pro-German circle to power?

The Announcement

in 1891, troops from Kansas City and Concordia, along with Kansas volunteers led by Thaddeus Elridge, march on Topeka, hoping to beat reinforcements heading there to shore up 'Sockless' Jerry Simpson. Simpson bustles about the capitol, getting the Kansans still loyal to him ready to endure a seige.

in 1999, Queen Gwen, the newly-christened “Pillar of Britain”, negotiates a surrender from Central European Imperial holdouts in Istanbul, freeing up Sir Lance du Lac's Round Table Corps to head off to Africa, where former vassal states of the CEE are attempting to stir up trouble for Great Britain's possessions there. The queen is hailed for her mastery of politics, and poll after poll shows that she is almost as beloved as King Arthur II, who lies near death in a coma.

In 2008, powered by the Lyle Drive, the Champion made the space flight to Mars in just eighteen days. Landing south of Lacus Soli, the crew soon discovered that Mars was inhabited. Captain von Tromp located a single survivor from the doomed mission of the Envoy. The Martian was a thirteen year old innocent named Valentine Michael Smith, very much a stranger in a strange land.

In 1983 Diana Ross was arrested on a charge of assault following the NBC broadcast Hitsville 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever. The unrehearsed Supremes reunion between Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Cindy Birdsong was cut short when Ross, frustrated by the fact that Wilson and Birdsong were taking the same steps forward as her instead of staying in the back, turned around and pushed Wilson towards the back of the stage. Diana Ross Diana Ross
In Ross' defense Mary Wilson had said in her own book that she had instructed Cindy right before the performance that they should both take a step forward each time Diana did. Thereby provoking Diana and causing her to tell Mary to stand back.

A few moments later, Motown labelmates such as Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, and others quickly filled the stage for an impromptu finale. Although Producer Suzanne Depasse had instructed Diana to introduce Berry Gordy after leading the finale, Mary decided to do the honors, by calling Berry down herself. This led Diana to tell Mary "it's been taken care of".

By the time the reunion aired on NBC, the Ross/Wilson altercations had been excised from the special, but they were widely reported, and although Mary confessed in her book in 1986 the performance resulted in bad publicity for Ross.

Mary Wilson made a formal complaint after the show leading to Ross' arrest.

In 1945, in the devastated city of Tokyo the mirage of the nuclear mushroom cloud transformed into the shape of the Lord Jesus. The peace and reconciliation mission led by General-san Douglas MacArthur fell upon their knees, hot tears of joy ran down their cheeks. They had found a place in their hearts for Jesus, and that day they would be with him in Paradise.

Gibr al-Ţāriq
In 1761, an Arab Dhow undocked from the great Berber port of Gibr al-Ţāriq (Gibraltar). The "Rock of Tariq" as it was called in Arabic was named after the Umayyad general Tariq ibn-Ziyad who led the initial incursion into Iberia in advance of the main Moorish force in 711. Today the circumstances were somewhat inglorious ..

In 1994, the returned passengers of London Underground train number AEJX53B are interviewed at Paddington Green Police Station in West Central London. In 2999, a most heated exchange of views occurred. The wisdom of mind casting a third episode of “Personality of the Triple Millennia” (POT3M) was the topic of discussion. The first episode had been an anticlimax of pure Schmaltz. “I never leave a pub before closing time”, said Churchill, “and tonight will be no .. MC Millennia

A cross-over in the megaband multimedia stream had confused Adolf Hitler with a 1960s British TV anti-hero, the Dalek. Mega personality MC Millennia convinced a sceptical team that he deserved a final shot at the show. Very reluctantly, they agree.

Merry Christmas Everyone

Stop the CavalryIn 1914, after the "Christmas truce" begins in World War I, British, Russian and German soldiers return home to overthrow their respective monarchs. This supreme act of peace and reconciliation was celebrated by the lyrics of Jona Lewis's 1980 classic Stop the Cavalry ~

If I get home, live to tell the tale
I'll run for all presidencies
If I get elected I'll stop - I will stop the cavalry.

Mason and John Slidell were confined in Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, precipitating the Trent Affair that brought Britain into open war with the United States of America.

In 4, B.C. Yeshua of Nazareth is born while his family is visiting relatives in Bethlehem. A charismatic speaker and innovative religious philosopher, Yeshua reenergizes the Hebrew faith through his subtle interpretation of God as Father, where previous rabbis had only taught of Him as Lord. This new vision of the faith swept Judaism, and helped it extend even to the Gentiles, who converted in mass numbers during Rabbi Yeshua’s life. His son continued his teachings, and Yeshua’s vision of Judaism is now the dominant sect in the world’s most numerous faith.

Tear down the Tories
In 1989, on this day, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher finally succumbed to pressure from Cabinet colleagues and resigned from her post. Thatcher had served three consecutive terms until an unprecented run of government crises in the late 1980 had made her position untenable.

The stock market crashed and poll tax riots had been just two of the events in a traumatic year of spasms.

Violent fast-moving change was racing across the Western democracies and the end of capitalism was in sight. The reinvigorated Soviet Union under the decisive leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev was on the march, and already people were talking about "the end of history".
Abandoned Darwin
In 1974, on this day Acting Prime Minister Dr Jim Cairns announced the abandonment of the northern Australian city of Darwin the national capital as raga storms continuned to pound the Far East. Much of the joy of Christmas disappeared as devastating high winds of up to 135mph and driving rain tore through homes, flooded streets and left up to 90% of the town in ruins. More than 100 people have been injured, many of them critically with deep lacerations, spine and head wounds and it is thought at least 30 people have been killed.
The most seriously injured have been airlifted to safety by the Royal Australian Air Force and commercial airliners.
