in 1864, General George A. Custer of the Union Army marries his Michigan bride, Elizabeth Bacon. The happy couple settled down in New York, where Elizabeth Custer's social connections provided General Custer with a new livelihood after the war. She convinced him to leave the military once the war in the south was won, and he then entered politics. He spent 6 years in the New York State Legislature until winning his first race for the US House in 1872. He was then tapped to be Ulysses Grant's running mate in the Centennial Election, 1876, which the two generals won handily. Vice-President Custer ran on his own merits in 1884, but was defeated by the Democratic candidate, Grover Cleveland. Custer retired back to New York, where he became governor for one term before leaving politics and entering business with the help of the many friends he had made in Washington. He died in 1932, one year before his wife, Elizabeth, and was feted by New York as a genuine hero and favorite son just as another New York governor, Franklin Roosevelt, was winning the presidency again.

in 2007, Secret Service agents surround the Capitol Building and prevent Congressmen and their staffers from entering; at least, most of them do. A small number of SS agents disobey their official orders and sneak into the White House, where they find a nearly-unconscious President Bush mumbling about “runnin' 'em all down.” They spirit the president out of his residence and to a handful of Congressmen. These Congressmen, led by Senator Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, announce to the Secret Service that they have the president, and will, in the Senator's words, “conduct the people's business no matter how many thugs stand in the way.”

in 1887, in a rare moment of prescience, President Grover Cleveland vetoes the Dawes Severalty Act, which would have forcefully integrated Native Americans into the US population and confiscated their land. Although Congress comes within 4 votes of overriding his veto, the act lapses and native negotiators craft an agreement more favorable to their people. The Sioux, in particular, are able to negotiate virtual autonomy for their people and huge areas of the northern US are ceded to them. This all comes to nothing when the xenophobic Arden administration assumes office in 1897 and begins chewing away the corners of Sioux territory. This leads right into the so-called Indian Wars of the early 20th century that ravaged the American west.

in 2007, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts reluctantly opens the impeachment trial of President George W. Bush in the US Senate. Just as the prosecutors from the House begin their presentation on the murders that led them to move against the president, Secret Service agents burst into the chamber and arrest them. Pandemonium ensues as several Senators attempt to stop the SS and are shot. Senators John McCain and Jim Webb both die from the wounds they suffer on the Senate floor, and four others are rushed to the hospital. Vice President Dick Cheney takes the speaker's podium and tells the remaining senators and representatives, “Until further notice from the office of the Commander-in-Chief, this legislative body is dissolved.” President Bush, rather obviously drunk, takes to the airwaves and makes a rambling, barely coherent speech in which he tells the nation that unlawful enemy combatants have taken over the US Congress, and he had no choice but to, “shut 'em all down.”

in 1775, the publication of Benjamin Franklin's “An Imaginary Speech” in London, in which he rebutted slanders against the American colonists with such statements as, “Indiscriminate Accusations against the Absent are cowardly Calumnies,” causes Sir Reginald Beckwith, a minor noble who had first published the anti-American sentiments, to challenge him to a duel. Sir Reginald, though wounded by Franklin's gunshot, aims true and drops the American statesman. Howls of protest from across the water become battle cries that rally the colonials. “Remember Franklin!” and “For Ben!” became familiar to British soldiers hearing their last words in the war that led to colonial independence in 1779.

in 1963, Richard Reilly, the American philosopher responsible for the modern synthesis of the Greek and Zen schools of thought, was born in Ohio. Reilly's Zeeks, who followed the teachings he began at Rice University in Texas, became highly influential in virtually every field of endeavor, from literature to space flight – one of his students was connected with NASA. After a follower of his was appointed to the president's cabinet in 2013, he was introduced to President Edwards and was, in short order, the new spiritual advisor to the White House. From this new vantage point, his creed of Zeek Thought became wildly popular, and Zeek brotherhoods popped up everywhere.

in 2007, President Bush issues a statement retroactively declaring all of the reporters and 2 Secret Service agents he killed unlawful enemy combatants, and his running them over with a tractor was simply the execution of the sentences he gave them. This fails to stop the impeachment trial against him from proceeding; indeed it only seems to spur the Congresspeople on, and quiets several of his defenders. His most vocal defender, though, Connecticut's Joseph Lieberman, continues to profess faith in the president's good will and good judgment. “We can't second-guess the Commander-in-Chief,” Senator Lieberman tells reporters. “We're at war, and sometimes hard decisions and even harder actions must be taken.”

in 1820, the American Colonization Society, an abolitionist organization devoted to seeing the repatriation of Africans to their native land, sends off its first colonists to Freetown, a new colony in West Africa. The success of the Freetown project draws hundreds, then thousands, and then finally millions as slaves of African descent find their way across the ocean and away from their lives of captivity. By 1849, so few slaves existed in the Americas that all of the countries had abolished slavery. Even the United States and Brazil, the last two holdouts, finally had to admit that they were unable to maintain the institution in the face of such a yearning for freedom. With the collapse of slavery, many in the US south turned to newly-arrived techniques of mechanical industry in order to tend crops, and the region became a center for the new Industrial Revolution. Ironically, their greatest trading partners were the nations of West Africa that had been founded by freed slaves, proving that no matter what your past may be, business is business.

in 1919, Federal troops and professional strike-breakers clash with union members in the streets of Seattle, Washington, as the corporate elite of America attempt to stem the strong pro-union tide sweeping the nation. Unfortunately for the elite, many of the troops cross over to the other side during the fighting, and they are forced to surrender before they are lynched. One particularly loud anti-union boss, A.J. Patrick of the North Coast Shipping firm, does wait too long, and is torn limb from limb in his office after making many disparaging remarks about his workers. While America's political leaders denounce the violence in Seattle, the strength shown by the unions gives them immense popularity among the working class, and their numbers swell. Although the anti-union elite attempt to link the labor movement to the Communists in Russia, the 1920's see the end of their power and the entrenchment of labor's political power in America.

in 2007, the articles of impeachment pass in contentious debate in the US House, and a trial date is hastily arranged in the Senate. Several prominent Republicans, among whom are rather obvious presidential contenders, vow that their votes on the articles are not predetermined. Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, an independent, leads President Bush's defense at the White House's request. The District Attorney in Peoria, Illinois, where the president committed his mass slaughter, comes under immense pressure to drop the paltry manslaughter charges against the Commander-in-Chief. He refuses, declaring that he bowed to political demands in reducing the charges from murder in the first place. Late at night, a meeting between President Bush and a large number of advisors is assembled in secret.

in 1937, newly-reelected President Franklin Roosevelt begins his push to expand the Supreme Court to 15 members in order to create a liberal majority on the High Court. In spite of spirited Republican opposition, Roosevelt's immense popularity carries the day, and 6 new Justices are sworn in the following spring. With their help, the New Deal takes its place as entrenched law in short order. Unfortunately for the liberal movement, conservatives take over the court in the 1950's and 60's, and America's support structure is dismantled in the 1980's. The importance of this structure is made clear to the nation when the stock market crashes in 1987 and savings & loans across the country collapse due to corruption brought about by deregulation. The crisis ushers in a new liberal era with the election of President Jesse Jackson in 1988, who turns America around with a radical restructuring of the nation's resources. Although the wealthy wail about having to return to tax rates mirroring those of the 1950's, the country as a whole is strengthened by his policies and supports him for his landslide reelection in 1992.

in 1988, a federal court in Florida hands down a pair of indictments for Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega on drug trafficking charges. After Noriega makes a call to Langley, Virginia, the indictments are quietly squashed. President Reagan, who had been considering sending troops down to Panama to capture the dictator, is warned off of the action by Vice-President Bush, a former CIA director.

in 2007, after President Bush killed almost a dozen members of the White House Press Corps and 2 Secret Service agents while joyriding a tractor, impeachment papers were drawn up in the House, with reluctant bipartisan support. The White House immediately denounced the effort, saying that the charge of manslaughter did not rise to “High Crimes and Misdemeanors” as required by the Constitution. Representatives argued back that the charge had been reduced to manslaughter only because of White House pressure on the local District Attorney – video of the event clearly showed the president laughing maniacally as he ran down the reporters.

Tybee Bomb	In 1958 the Tybee Hydrogen Bomb is lost by the US Air Force off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. By a perverse twist of fate, it would detonate at the height of the Cuban Missiles Crisis, spooking the trigger-happy Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Curtis 'Bombs Away' LeMay into believing ..

in 1887, angered at the presumption of the men who had taken the land of his people, the Great Groundhog caused winter to lengthen for 6 weeks, lashing them with cold and snow. They didn't take the lesson, however, so he endowed one of his kind with the power to make them relive this experience year after year – when he is pleased, the Chosen Groundhog allows winter to end early. When angered, the Chosen extends winter and punishes the wicked with powerful winds and cold. A cult has grown around the Chosen One in Punxsutawney, where they try to appease him with dancing, food and worship each year.

in 2007, former European Union President and Anti-Christ Morris Appleby arrives in Heaven to await his judgment. Having just jumped through the loophole of accepting Jesus as his personal savior, Appleby presents something of a problem to the Celestial Bureaucracy. He is bumped to the head of the Line of Judgment, and given an audience with the Most High and Holy. “Hullo, God,” he says to the Almighty as he cheerfully begins the review of his life.

in 2007, Boston's mayor apologizes to the citizens of the city for panicking over magnetic boards with LEDs attached to them, and the city's media also expresses chagrin over their role in creating a panic over a simple marketing campaign. As the mayor said, “Although we live in times of heightened terror, if we jump every time we see something a little unusual, then the terrorists have already won. From now on, I promise that we will not live in terror.” The city quietly goes back to normal, resuming life a little wiser and less afraid of the world than it had been before. A real hoaxer, who had placed 2 fake pipe bombs at a hospital and a bridge, is arrested and quietly put in jail without a media circus.

Native American	In 13,492 sailors and traders from the Turtle Island seek an eastward passage to the subcontinent of Hindustan. Through an incomplete understanding of the continents, they land in Europe and are greatly surprised by the primitive nature of the white Indians they find.

Cardiff Giant	In 1869 it was confirmed by scientists that the Cardiff Giant was after all a 10-foot-tall (3 m) petrified man uncovered by workers digging a well behind the barn of William C. 'Stub' Newell in Cardiff, New York.

He gave himself the title His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire .. in 1908, the Great War begins after King Carlos of Portugal is assassinated by leftist revolutionaries seeking revenge for his imposition of the dictator Joao Franco on their country. His son, King Luis Filipe, attacks the leftists with a ferocity that appalls even the other monarchies of Europe. Leftists across the continent pour into the small nation in solidarity, and the conflict spills over into Spain by the summer. The French are drawn in to aid their allies in Spain, and the Italians send aid to Portugal, and by 1910, a complicated web of alliances and treaties plunges the entire continent and all its holdings into war. The loosely-aligned Liberalistes win the war after a decade of struggle, overthrowing every government in Europe except the Swiss. The new Confederation of Europe that rises from the ashes of the continent's old ways becomes an exporter of leftist ideology all over the world, and soon begins a low-level conflict with the USA, Japan and China in the Long War from 1922-1986, when the last of the Big Three, Japan, finally empowers a Liberaliste-dominated parliament.

in 2007, a confused Angelic host brings former European Union President and Anti-Christ Morris Appleby before newly returned savior Emmanuel. The freshly converted Appleby bows before his master and vows, “My life, heart and soul are yours, Prince of Peace.” Emmanuel looks at the host, who shrug and leave, happy to let the big guy handle this one. Emmanuel, in turn, punts the problem upstairs, sending Appleby bodily to Heaven for judgement.

Briggs	In 2007 father arrives at the nursery to discover his children have already been collected a short time before – by him. He races outside to see a doppelgänger surrounded by a gentle red aura some 500 metres away. The demon has his children who are unaware of the demonic kidnapping taking ..
.. place. A short and dour individual reaches the doppelgänger first, and in a moment traps the demon Azâzêl in a holy vial. The Briggs family are safe again, for now.
