The Announcement

in 1999, Walton Ray Thermopolous meets with Prime Minister Kay Ector at the PM's insistence. “I have a feeling the queen needs our help,” Sir Kay says to Thermopolous. “But she cannot ask for fear of what may be revealed. Therefore, We must come to her aid stealthily.” Thermopolous, who is doing quite well now that he no longer has to split his profits with either the Illuminati or Queen Gwen, is reluctant to do anything to jeopardize his position. “She seems to be fine with the state of affairs they way they are,” he tells the prime minister. “Why act without orders? Right now, we're on top of the world – the CEE is gone, my old masters went with them, and the queen sits at the side of the king rather than in a jail cell. There is no need for action.” Ector simply cannot bring himself to believe this. “She needs our help. I know this is the case. And if you will not help, your government contracts will be cut off.” Thermopolous reluctantly agrees to supply a small team of professionals for the plan that the prime minister has drawn up for them.

In 1999, the networks ran instalment two of TSEotTC, part two. The Mountbatten Project delivers .. the British bomb the Japanese into an unexpected defeat. On the balcony of Buckingham Palace, the Royal Family wave and smile at the crowds. In Hiroshima, children choke in the radioactive slag.

In 1952, an historian in a fifth-rate 1952 CSA, overshadowed by the USA and the Germanic Union, obtained a position at an academic commune near Gettysburg, and one day he is offered the chance to travel back in time to July 1, 1863. In Bring the Jubilee author Ward Moore casts a fresh perspective on the War of Northern Aggression - for the twenty-six breakaway states would defeat have been worse than stalemate?

In 1966, Ronnie Harran, the booker from the Sunset Strip Whisky A Go-Go Club watched the house band at the London Fog, a pathetic little nightclub just down the street. She was impressed by Jim Morrison's primal stage-appeal and almost offered the Doors the house-band slot at the Whisky. Morrison who had been tripping on acid then introduced “The End” with some crazy “Oedipus Rex” talk about his parents and Harran walked out in disgust.

Grape treaders
Grape treaders
In 1761, the seven European stowaways enjoyed fellowship aboard the Arab Dhow. Speakers of Flemish, German, French and Spanish, they struggled to communicate little more than their fierce job of discovery. In fact, they were crying with God-sent joy. All of them were red grape-treaders, that was the connection. Despite their ..
.. ignorance, at some level they grasped that massive doses of the juice had protected them from the plague known as the Red Death. Twenty-fourth century scientists would discover that this was resveratrol, a chemical found in grape skins rather than the juice of the fruit itself. But that was a detail of little consequence to this elated band of survivors. They knew their Old Testament apocalypses well enough to know that Jesus had saved them from extinction. Not a sparrow falls to earth that God does not see. And after all, were these Europeans little more than sparrows, flying from a dreadful storm?

In 1984, British Horror Writer Graham Masterton published IKON, a tribute to Philip K Dick's 1964 counter-factual novel Man in the High Castle. .. the Cuban Missiles Crises. Like Dick before him, the essence of Masterton's masterpiece is the book within the book, 'The Eagle Lies Heavy', a work of fiction written by a man called Graham Masterton. It describes a world where the Americans won the Cuban Missile Crisis - as a result, it has been banned by the Americans. Given his unpopularity with the world's two great powers, Masterton is said to live in a heavily fortified home and has become known as "The Author in the High Castle". Critics panned the concept but loved the story. After all, it was predicated on the US surrendering to Secretary Khrushchev. Today we know that Mr Kennedy meant it when he said “the problems of the world today are not susceptible to a military solution”. He had already surrendered by then.

The Announcement

Co-historian's note: Mr Taylor is temporarily out of commission and may provide an intriguing story from this timeline tomorrow by way of explanation.

In 1945, at 5.30am the world's first and last atomic bomb exploded at the Alamogordo air base, New Mexico. Power equivalent to 15,000 tons of TNT was generated and the surface of the desert surrounding the point of the bomb's detonation was fused to glass for a radius of 800 yards.

Horrified, the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer added his name to the list of seventy scientists who would submit a petition to President Truman the very next day. The petition urged Truman not to use bomb unless the terms of surrender had been published and refused. Understanding that conventional bombing could kill 125,000 people in Tokyo, they believed Truman's horror logic was self-defeating. The judgement of the scientists was prescient insofar as the only blocker preventing agreement in July 1945 was a guarantee over the Emperor's status.

Oppenheimer had been committed to the democratic left ever since the Spanish Civil War. As soon as Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, he started work on separating uranium-235, the fissionable component of an atomic bomb, from natural uranium. However his conviction had been stolen in a moment of utter destruction. By way of explanation, Oppenheimer also added a small note beneath his signature "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds". It is improbable Truman understood the irony of the humanist reference to the Bhagavad Gita. Oppenheimer had redefined the democratic party philosophy to embrace the people of Asia, excluded most famously by Woodrow Wilson at the Paris Peace Conference.

In 1999, in Center Lovell, Maine driver Bryan Smith was distracted by an unrestrained Rottweiler named Bullet, moving in the back of his 1985 Dodge Caravan. As a result, he struck the author Stephen King who was walking on the right shoulder of Route 5. As the dying author slips into unconsciousness, he hallucinates he is climbing to the top of a Dark Tower. Reaching a door marked "Stephen" he realizes to his horror he has reached the Tower countless times before. He is sucked through the door only to be teleported back in time to his birth in Portland Maine 1947. Before he does, he seizes the Horn of Eld. Perhaps this cycle of King's journey will present him the opportunity to make different decisions and possibly break the cycle and find salvation. After all, Ka is a circle.

The Last Wimbledon

The Announcement

A note from the AH: Here we are at the luckiest day of the century - 7th day of the 7th month of the 7th year – so, I'm buying a lottery ticket! I sincerely hope that good luck follows you today, and that our humble offerings are part of it...

Andrea opened up a web browser to her favorite Internet radio station so that she could have some tunes while she worked. Better enjoy it while it lasts, she thought, mentally cursing the new laws that were going to doom this little spark of enjoyment. She had finally found a great oldies station, and it was going to go out of business. Typical.
After the music started playing, she went back to her word processor and looked through her notes. She felt nervous – she was one of two people at the meeting who weren't heavy politicians, and the other person was the actual discoverer of the probe. She had just led the team that confirmed its location and intercept course with earth. She pretty much knew that all the pols wanted to hear from her was a date and a time that the thing would be getting to earth, but she wanted to say so much more. She had dreamed of this happening since she had first read Stranger in a Strange Land when she was 12, and it's hard to encapsulate your feelings on achieving the goal of a lifetime in a dry, technical report.
She tried to tone that down, though. She included some speculation on the possible inhabitants of Wolf 359 3 million years ago because she couldn't help herself. She imagined them being much like the human race now, taking the first few steps out into the universe by sending mechanical probes to test the waters of the cosmos – no, scratch that, that was too “poetic”, and they didn't want to hear that. It was entirely possible that 3 million years ago, Wolf 359 was a system much like their own, and the inhabitants of the system – they were going to have to come up with a name for them. Lupines? 359ians was definitely out. Just plain Wolves?
Anyway, the inhabitants had obviously sent out probes much like we sent out Voyager. The only question was whether the Lupine probe – yes, she liked that name best – was sent out at the beginning or the end of their explorations. She speculated that after 3 million years, there was no possibility that the people who sent the probe were still there – this was probably the last record of their civilization. That saddened her. First contact, and they're probably all dead.
She then went into the technical details of slowing the thing down without destroying it, matching speeds with the shuttle before it could descend into the atmosphere, and the heavy quarantine that she wanted to place it under. Her recommendation was to keep it at the International Space Station, but she had already been told that it would be coming to earth. In her opinion, as well as the opinion of everyone else on her team, that was needlessly reckless; scientists could be flown up to the ISS and kept there indefinitely while they worked on the probe and were monitored for any signs of alien disease or contamination.
The bigwigs at all the space agencies wanted this “big win” to appear on earth, though, and they were the ones who called the shots. So, she had to present a quarantine protocol along with her ISS recommendation that allowed for bringing the probe to earth with minimum possibility of polluting the planet with alien taint. She had that almost worked out, although she wished there was a way to catch the thing without involving the shuttle's crew. No matter what, they were going to have to be quarantined, as well, and she was going to stand very firm on that.

In 1999, the networks ran installment eight of TSEotTC, part two. The conspiracy after the drama after the tears... The Queen reluctant to address the nation, a suspicion that British Secret Agents had done away with the Prince of Hearts to save the monarchy from the changes of Charles' new thinking. And Diana, perhaps carrying Dodi's baby, father Mohammed Al-Fayd implicated in the "Accident"?

In 5708, by the Hebrew Calendar the Jewish nation suffered the Israeli Catastrophe. The events occurred less than three years after the end of the holocaust, and many observed some measure of linkage in the events.

Following the collapse of the short-lived State of Israel, the United Nations definition of an "Israeli refugee" is a person "whose normal place of residence was Israel between 14th May 1948 and 7th July 1948, who lost both their homes and means of livelihood as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict." "UNRWA's definition of a refugee also covers the descendants of persons who became refugees in 1948" regardless of whether they reside in areas designated as "refugee camps" or in established, permanent communities.

Also amongst the dead were Field Marshal T.E. Lawrence leading his second Arab revolt, assisted by the Arab Legion and General John Bagot Glubb (“Glubb Pasha”).

Sam Cooke - King of Soul
King of Soul
On December 11, 1964 Cooke was found shot dead in the Hacienda Hotel, a small place close to the Watts section of Los Angeles California. The police reports that came from the crime scene were ugly. Cooke was reported to be found lying slumped on the floor with bullet wounds all over his body, shot by the Motel Manager in self-defence. The decapitated state of the body as witnessed by singer Etta James ridicules the LAPD explanation.

It has been alleged that the record label and the Mob conspired to execute Cooke. In being one of the first African American musicians to attempt to take control of his own destiny, Cooke attended to the business side of his musical career and in so doing clashed with the rocket label, the mob and the Nation of Islam. He had abandoned his backers and some shadowy people were severely out of pocket.

Many may dispute his title as "the king of soul" but Sam Cooke's legacy is an extensive one and his impact on soul music is undeniable - he had 29 Top 40 hits in the U.S. between 1957 and 1965 and his voice electrifies us to this day. A synopsis of Sam Cooke's alleged mob execution is described at Epinions

in 1891, General Anthony Franklin begins his long journey back east to face his coming court-martial. In the aftermath of the massacre in western Missouri, Kansas City falls to the Kansans, and Missouri's Governor Silas Trent faces some similar rumblings which threaten to topple him if he continues supplying troops to the federals. He embarks on a statewide trip to apologize and shore up support for at least a defensive force on the Kansas border. He asks Lt. Colonel Theodore Monteith to move his base of operations out of Missouri, and Colonel Monteith sends a telegram to Major Mark Wainwright in Nebraska, telling him that the Kansas siege is about to be commanded from that state.

The Central European Imperial resistance is minimal for some reason, and du Lac easily takes and fortifies the coast. The formerly French knight sends word to his old labor allies in the country to rise up and join with him to liberate France from the CEE. A hastily assembled meeting of the Illuminati's upper echelons in Switzerland is concerned, but Emperor Pierre assures them, “This is not unexpected, and we have contingencies in place to handle this. Both were a decade older than the principal characters, and gave the movie a frumpy TV dinner feeling. He need not have worried, during the premier, the real Louise Baltimore arrived back in 1983, snatched the twonky mission report, preventing both the book Millennium and the movie ever being produced.

A committed socialist, a pilot in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War and landed gentry he was untouchable. Origin

In 1809, Charles Robert Darwin was born on this day in Mount House, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.

The greatest fraud of the Victorian era, Darwin promoted 'the men from monkeys' hoax in his book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life (usually abbreviated to The Origin of Species) .
 -
Satires, parodies and caricatures assaulted the hoax. The Church of England scientific establishment, including Darwin’s old Cambridge tutors Sedgwick and Henslow, reacted against the book.

The most famous confrontation took place at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Oxford. Professor John William Draper delivered a long lecture about Darwin and social progress, then Samuel Wilberforce, the Bishop of Oxford, argued against Darwin. On being asked by Wilberforce whether he was descended from monkeys on his grandfather’s side or his grandmother’s side, Huxley muttered: 'The Lord has delivered him into my hands' and replied that he 'would rather be descended from an ape than from a cultivated man who used his gifts of culture and eloquence in the service of prejudice and falsehood'.
.
In 1973, the Viet Cong released the first United States prisoners of war including the future President John Murtha. Under no illusions of the US role as a global policeman, Murtha would untangle American commitments around the world and later resign the US seat on the Security Council.
.
In 1964, following his speech at Trenchard Hall on the campus of the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, Malcom X attended a reception in the Students' Union Hall held for him by the Muslim Students' Society. During this reception the students bestowed upon him the name 'Omowale', meaning 'the son returns home' in the Yoruba language. Little was to play a vital diplomatic role two years later, preventing the great nation of Nigeria from descending into civil war. He asked Generals Gowon and Ojukwu the simple question - who benefits, alluding to european aggitation in black Africa's largest economy.
.
In 1942, Chairman of the Israeli Liberation Organisation (ILO) Ehud Barak was born Mishmar HaSharon, British Mandate of Palestine.

Barak was in charge of the Siege of Beirut that took place in the summer of 1982 as a result of the breakdown of the Arab-Israeli cease-fire effected by the League of Nations. It ended with the ILO evacuating Beirut by sea in humiliating fashion and thus being forced out of Lebanon by the Palestinian Defense Force.

.
In 1809, a boy named Abraham Lincoln was born in a small cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He grew up to become President of the United States, lead the country through a civil war, and survive not one but two assassination attempts in his three terms in office. Although the rights of the freed slaves in the former Confederacy suffered in the lax occupation he forced on them, he did ensure their freedom, and helped millions of them emigrate to the northern states.

In 1999, on a nearly straight party-line vote, President Hillary Clinton is acquitted in her impeachment trial. The nation's first woman president was a target for the Republican Party from the day she was elected in 1996, and they thought that charges of illegality in an old land deal, long since proven false, could provide cover for them to remove her from office. The nation thought otherwise; she won reelection in 2000 by a landslide.

The canvass was discovered in Oslo a few hours later, there were now four figures standing behind the protagonist.

In 1994, two men disappeared from the National Art Museum in Oslo. The museum curator, Mr. Carlin ushered the men through the building, fully aware that the pair were thieves on an impossible mission to steal Edvard Munch's iconic painting 'The Scream'. Realising the pointlessness of their mission, the unconcerned Carlin recounted the storied history of the painting, which has been plagued by incidents of attempted theft. Carlin tells the skeptical Spangler the image of the Reaper is rumored to appear in the painting, standing close to the viewer. The thieves scoffed, but felt unnamable horror when they looks into the mirror. As Carlin relates the history of a high school boy who saw the Reaper and disappeared without a trace, the pair becomes ill and rushed out of the second floor never to appear again.

In 1691, the Williamite Army abandons the siege of Dublin. By now the war in Ireland is seen as more or less a stalemate. It is clear that James will not be able to invade England and remount the throne, but it seems increasingly unlikely that William will gain control over Ireland. James' advisors are beginning to convince him to accept William's control over England and Scotland, in the short time at least. And consoladate control over Ireland. King William is facing similar calls to 'let the papists go' [continued from July 1st 1690, continues October 3rd 1691]
