Charles Windsor
In 2001 Chairman McPherson issues the report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the circumstances of the fatal car crash which killed the heir to the throne Prince Charles Windsor and his lover Camilla Parker-Bowles in Paris on 31st August, 1997. McPherson finds no grounds for conspiracy. ..
.. The British Public will have none of it, and the McPherson report overtakes the Warren Commission as a source of conspiracy theories on the Internet.

After(cont.)
“There's a lot of fighting going on right now,” Mike said, looking at the map. He pointed at the areas closest to them. “According to the resistance bloggers, President-elect Kerry and his troops are pushing through over here at Kermit.”
“Shouldn't we head there, then?” Steph was looking over his shoulder anxiously. “I mean, they're the guys we want to get this stuff to, right?”
“Yeah, but do we really want to head into the middle of the fight?” Mike certainly looked as if he didn't want to. “If we could bypass them and join up with the resistance that's bringing up the rear, we wouldn't have to dodge bullets; or get forced to fight the guys we're supposed to be helping by our good Texas neighbors, here.”
“I'm just thinkin' that we need to get to the other side as quick as possible. Especially if they're gonna be looking for 'able-bodied' recruits.” She looked at one of the windows he had open on his computer and read a few lines from a hysterical writer. “This guy says that Kerry and his troops are shielding refugees from the Texas Guard. If we just get behind the lines, we can ask them to help us.”
“That means we have to get through the lines. You know, fighting, gunfire, that kinda bad stuff?”
She studied the map for a minute. “Maybe we can just go off-road before we get there. We leave the highway here,” she said, pointing to a section of the road a couple of dozen miles from Kermit, “in front of the fighting, scoot cross-country till we get behind the good guys, then circle around and head into Kermit. It's all desert out here, shouldn't be that hard to get across.”
“Yeah, people die in the desert, you know?”
“We'll bring water.”
“Man.” Mike whined. “I wish I'd gone with Eli, now.”

Janice fumbled through the dead guard's clothes for a set of keys while Jake made sure no one else was in the basement. He asked the president, “Do you know how many of them were watching you?”
“I've only seen about three of 'em the last few hours,” the president said. “For some reason, most of them left earlier.”
“They've got a body double of you,” Janice told him, picking the keys off of the body. She walked over to Bush and unlocked his cuffs. “They're trying to install him into the White House. I don't know what good that would do them, since Kerry was supposed to take office next month, anyway.”
“Well,” Bush said, sheepishly. “We kind of have a provision that suspends the results of the election in case of martial law.”
Jake and Janice both looked at him. Janice recovered her voice first. “I want you to say that into my recorder here, so that the next time somebody calls me a crazy conspiracy nut, I can make them listen to you admitting that.”
“We were just going to use it in case of a terrorist attack, miss.”
“And, nobody would ever think of misusing a provision like that!”
Jake shoved himself between them. “You know, this is all fascinating, but we need to get the hell outta here.” He walked over to the stairs. “Janice, I'll take point, you come up behind the president. Mr. President, in case there's still somebody up there who doesn't want you leaving, you stick close to us. We'll get you out of here.”
“I love it when you take charge,” Janice whispered to Jake, smirking.

The Announcement

Alt-Hist Intro: This is a time-traveler idea I've had – let me know what you think in the comments!

I went back in time the other day. It was quite an interesting experience. I almost prevented the birth of Hitler, and was an inch away from saving Martin Luther King. And, by the way, it was Oswald, and he was the only gunman. I can say that without fear of contradiction.
I'm not supposed to interfere, but you can't help yourself, really. After all, what's the point of going back if you're not going to try to change things? Time travel is the ultimate wish fulfillment. If you go back far enough, and you know enough, you can be a god.
Marcus had wanted to do that; be a god. He told me that he could bring a few gadgets with him, set up shop in Mesopotamia or someplace like that, and he would never have to worry about anything ever again. I reminded him that modern conveniences like hologames, running water and vaccinations might be missed by someone playing the god for the primitive locals, but he says that he could tough it out. I doubt it.
But, he's been gone for a while now, and I don't think he's coming back. The world hasn't come crashing down around us, so whatever changes he's made, I assume that they've already been taken into account in the time stream. I hope.
That's what we all hope, really. Everybody involved in the project has got to hope that we can't really change the past, at least not in a way that will destroy the present. If we can, then somebody's going to screw us all up any day now.
Maybe they already have.
There are a lot of paradoxes in this line of work, and you really just have to get used to them. I mean, if you try to grasp each set of contradictions that you bring up just by appearing in the past, you'd spend all your time sitting around confused instead of doing something. And that's not very productive.
My main area of focus is on historical accuracy in textbooks. I was the one who got to correct all the assassination buffs who’ve been living on JFK rumors for decades. That was my masterpiece; seventeen cameras along a one mile patch of road in old Dallas. Conclusive proof that the only shots came from the book depository, there was nobody on the grassy knoll, and I got a really good close-up of Lee Harvey himself squeezing the trigger. How they howled. I've now been labeled part of the conspiracy.

In 2006, a series of high-level resignations continued in the Justice Department and at the FBI following the revelations of James Anthony Traficant, Jr. at a press conference in Washington.James Traficant
James Traficant
A former Democratic Representative in the United States Congress from Ohio, Traficant, Jr. had been recently released from prison after compelling evidence emerged that he was the victim of a government set-up. This included false allegations of taking bribes, filing false tax returns, racketeering, and forcing his aides to perform chores at his farm in Ohio and on his houseboat in Washington, D.C. All of which were dismissed at the re-trial.

In 1941, at Sidi Omar on the Egyptian border the terrible past finally caught up with Loose Cannon Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence. Obersturmbannführer Otto Skorzeny had been sent on a desperate mission by General Rommel, in a last ditch attempt to rescue the Afrika Korps from certain defeat in the North Africa Campaign. Skorzeny presented a series of letters from 1931 through 1934 that Lawrence had written to John Bruce, posing as his own Uncle. The Obersturmbannführer was ordered to either "turn" the Commander of the British Eighth Army, or hand over the letters to Lawrence's Arab allies. The bitter irony of being turned was not lost on Lawrence. "How could you do it?" asked Skorzeny twisting the knife.

In 1970, on this day António de Oliveira Salazar died. He had governed as the de facto dictator of the Portuguese Republic since 1932. During the previous two years he had ruled in name only since suffering a major stroke, forcing President Américo Tomás to effectively replace him with Marcelo Caetano. As a symbol of Portugese unity, the Mocidade Portuguesa (militia) of African, Asian and European ethnicity paid homage at his funeral. Dramatic changes that had been held in check for many years were now unleashed; Portugal was no longer “Proudly Alone”.

In 1940, a turn on the Wheel of If had transformed New York DA Allister Park into Celtic Judge Ib Scotlung. Brilliantly discharging the duties of a Pugnacious Peacekeeper through an intricacy of Islam, Park found a peaceful resolution to the border dispute between Tawantiinsuuju and Dar Al-Harb. The young widow and prospective wife, Kuurikwiljor had written down the belief system of Patjakamak for Park's study. This practice was not forbidden yet not encouraged by the Tawantiinsuuju, true believers who memorized Patjakamak. A Zorastrian precedent was applied to recognise non-believers as People of the Book. This redefinition as non-pagans enabled the Emir of Dar Al-Harb to establish peace across the physical barrier of the great river Ooorinookoo.

In 1948, Obersturmbannführer Otto Skorzeny escaped from an Allied Prisoner of War Camp.

With the defeat of Nazi Germany inevitable, Skorzeny had trained, until March 1945, recruits for the stay-behind Nazi organisation, the Werwolves, which engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Allies.

However, Skorzeny quickly realized that the Werwolves were too few in number to become an effective fighting force. Instead of this, they were used for the Nazi "ratlines", a secret "Underground railroad" which helped Nazi war criminals escape trial after Germany's surrender. Beside this organisation of the "ratlines," which would form the basis of the supposed ODESSA network after the war, Skorzeny had been employed since August 1944 by high-ranking Nazis and German industrialists to hide money and to loot property, documents, etc., some of which were buried in the mountains of Bavaria, and others shipped overseas.

Skorzeny finally decided to surrender to the Allies in May 1945, feeling that he could potentially be of use to the Americans in the forthcoming Cold War. On May 16, 1945, he emerged from the Austrian woods near Salzburg and surrendered to a lieutenant of the US Thirtieth Infantry Regiment. He was held as a prisoner of war for more than two years before being tried as a war criminal at the Dachau Trials for his false flag actions in the Battle of the Bulge. However, he was acquitted when Wing Commander Yeo-Thomas G.C. of the SOE testified in his defence that Allied forces had also fought in enemy uniform. But he was held until he escaped from a prison camp on July 27, 1948.

There was one item of property that Skorzeny took with him in his flight to South America. Some documents actually. Letters written by Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence, posing as his Uncle, to John Bruce between 1931 and 1934. And also the five missing pages from Lawrence's War Diary, ripped in shame by the author describing his capture in Deraa during November 1917. Documents that would create a spectacular reaction when they surfaced in 1960 during the premiere of the movie Lawrence of Arabia on 16th December 1962.

Surpluses

Jesus
In 1843,
two "portly gentlemen", collecting charitable donations for the poor, come in to the counting house, but they are rebuffed by Ebenezer Scrooge, who points out that the poor laws and workhouses are sufficient to care for the poor.

When Scrooge is told that many would rather die than go there, he mercilessly responds, "If they would rather die ... they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

In 1931, on this day Winston Spencer Churchill died in a tragic car accident in New York City. Churchill had taken a taxi from Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to Bernard Baruch's home on 5th Avenue. Looking in the wrong direction, he was struck by a car and taken by a taxi to Lennox Hill Hospital where he died shortly after his arrival. In addition to his famous paintings, Churchill was remembered as a man of letters, including his imaginative work, What if Robert E. Lee had not won the Battle of Gettysburg?
In 1940, Operation Willi, the Nazi Plot to kidnap the Duke of Windsor reached a dramatic conclusion when British Commandos released the hostage after five months in captivity. The plot originated with Nazi foreign minister Ribbentrop, who convinced Hitler that the Duke of Windsor lost his throne because of his pro-German sympathies and would be delighted to recover it through collaboration with the Nazis. The plan was to lure the Duke to Spain, invite him to collaborate, offer to restore him to the throne of England and ask the Spanish government to imprison him if he refused. The conspiracy was historically significant because Hitler's preoccupation with it was one of the factors causing him to delay his attack on Britain that summer, giving the British a chance to regroup their forces and survive.

In 1992, Robert K. Massie published Dragonfrigate. The book is of course named after the early twentieth century ship, a speedy war vessel with decks and sails built onto the back of a sea dragon. Much more than this, the book describes the naval rivalry between Britain and Germany after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, highlighting this as one of the major tensions that led to WW I.

In a dramatic climax, Midshipwizard Halcyon Blithe saves the British Grand Fleet from destruction at the Battle of Jutland. Having broken His Majesty's Articles of War, Blithe discovered a German spy placing live ammunition inside the fiery heart of the sea dragon just in time to prevent the explosion of the British flagship.

In 2003, on this day the compendium “A Collection of Political Counterfactuals” was published. Simon Burns' masterful sequel "What if Giuseppe Zangara had missed?" was a keynote contribution, considering the scenario of February 15, 1933 (one month before being sworn in for his first term in office): In Miami, Florida, Giuseppe Zangara fired five shots at Roosevelt's motorcade. Four people were wounded and the mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak, was killed. Zangara was found guilty of murder and was executed March 20. Many researchers believe Cermak, not Roosevelt, was the intended target that day, as the mayor was a staunch foe of Al Capone's Chicago mob organization. The result is shocking. Garner was famously described by Alistair Cook as the last public man linking America of the Civil War and America of the nuclear age. In 2000, American Vice President Al Gore delivered his concession speech officially ending his hopes of becoming the 43rd President of the United States. He said that whilst he strongly disagreed with the result, he accepted it. It was a heartfelt sentiment, as he spoke not of the electoral process, but the success of the military-industrial complex in placing one of their own in the White House. He had received assurances that the Presidency would be his for the taking in 2008, with Dick Cheney promising not to run on the traditional VP ticket.
In 2002, the enlargement of the Warsaw Pact continues with the announcement that Britain, France, Western Germany, Western Austria, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland and Spain would become members from May 1, 2004. In 2000, American Vice President Al Gore delivers his unity speech in which he confirms his intention to become the joint 43rd President of the United States, sharing two two-year terms with candidate George Walker Bush whilst he occupies the Senate Presidency as agreed. This was originally intended to prevent Gore disappearing into obscurity, but in fact created a two year feud that tore the country to pieces as the two candidates fought tooth and nail over 9/11 and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush sought to prove that the previous administration had been weak on al-Qaeda. Also, he said Clinton/Gore had rejected proposals for airline security back in the late 1990s, such as routine passenger inspections and secure cabin doors on commercial aircrafts which would have prevented 9/11. Bush said the Presidency was “a charge to keep”; when January 2003 arrived, how could Bush handover the Presidency to this man?

in 1891, the call goes out for volunteers to swell the Union Army's ranks and take back Kansas. Thousands of men answer the call and join up. In Kansas, 'Sockless' Simpson's troops stand guard across the state's borders and drill themselves to readiness. Just across those borders, General Anthony Franklin keeps his men ready and tries to locate a telegraph office to report in his location. “There's one every block back east,” he complained to Major Wainwright, “but the 'wild west' hides theirs so you can't find them.” Major Wainwright was thoroughly sick of the general at this point, but was still unwilling to resign his commission. He also wanted revenge against Simpson, and that kept him going as they tromped through Missouri's wilderness.

in 1999, on the occasion of Shakespeare's birth and death, and just a few days after his first anniversary on the throne, King Arthur II declares a general amnesty for the Windsors if they will return to Great Britain. “We are willing to forgo our righteous vengeance against the family of the false queen, Elizabeth Windsor, and grant them peace and safety within our borders,” he says in the statement at Stratford-on-Avon. “This is no time for the British family to be split.” Although it seems like a totally magnanimous gesture, it does quell the minor pro-Windsor factions in the country, giving Arthur a united country as he prepares his Templars for war against the Central European Empire. His new queen, Lady Gwen, gives up one of her homes for the Windsors. The former royal family, unsurprisingly, does not take King Arthur up on his amnesty. Prime Minister Merl Myrddin uses the offer of amnesty to persuade the rest of the Commonwealth to recognize Arthur as King and increase the power that can be brought to bear against the CEE.

Also as he had feared, angels come streaming down from the sky to fight on the side of the fundamentalists. The Anti-Christ knows that this is the beginning of the end, so he makes an announcement to the wider New World Order. “We're buggered, people,” he tells them. “Have fun while you can.”

Mike scanned the board for any response. There was nothing in any of the code names that Janice used. “No response yet,” he told Steph.
She chewed a fingernail and tried to calm herself down. “Does she have a cell phone?”
“Are you crazy? Do you know how insecure that kind of transmission is? You call her, she might as well be shouting out in the middle of the street.” Steph gave him her best mommy look. “Oh, all right.” Mike pulled out his own cell phone and dialed. “It's ringing.”

Janice jumped when she felt her cell phone buzz at her hip. “Holy crap,” she said, her heart slowing back to a reasonable pace. She slid it out and flipping it open. “Mike!”
Jake jumped over to her side, saying, “How are Joan and George? And Steph?”
“Did all four of you make it to New Mexico?”

“I heard your ex,” Mike said to Steph. His face grew slack as he realized who had perished in the mission, but hope sprang up in him. It was possible that it was all part of the conspiracy, after all. “Janice, we heard Bush say it, but was that just... I mean, is Eli...”

Janice lowered her head. “Neither Eli or Kevin made it, Mike.” Her voice trembled slightly, but she maintained most of her composure. “But, they were heroes. You should've seen Eli. He took a half dozen of 'em down with him.”

“Just like he always wanted,” Mike said, tears running down his face. He handed the phone to Steph because he couldn't speak anymore.
Steph was finding it a little hard to keep her voice, too. “Janice, this is Steph. Did you say that Kevin wasn't with you anymore?”

“Just me and Jake,” Janice said. “I'm sorry, Steph. I know you two were starting to like each other.” She had to stop talking for a second to pull herself together, then had to ask, “Is his dog OK?”

“He's fine,” Steph said. Her eyes were misty, but she was in better shape than Mike. She looked over at Joan and George and said, “Can my kids talk to their father?” When Janice said yes, Steph handed the phone to her daughter and walked over to Mike. She put an arm around him and hugged him tightly. “I'm sorry.”
Mike let her comfort him while he cried.
