Alternate Historian's Note: We have a side-project that we are working on – a collection of several timelines with more-or-less complete stories inside them – The Fall, the Tolman timeline, the Mormon War and more – that will be up for sale on Lulu, as soon as we have it edited together. If you would be interested in this, or would like to suggest something for inclusion in the collection, please email me and let me know. And, speaking of side projects, Guest Historian Stephen Payne has one, Crimson Kiss, available for free on Lulu. Check it out after you enjoy his entry for today, an entry of our own, and the continuation of our NaNoWriMo novel.

in 2001, after the first anniversary of the New World Order, European Union President and admitted Anti-Christ Morris Appleby is attacked by a small band of Christian militants during the televised opening of a new food center for sub-Saharan Africa. The exasperated demonic figure is sliced through the head by one of the militants before they can be captured. He assumes his horned, red-skinned form for a moment, prompting the militants to cry out to the camera, “See? See what he is?” After resuming his human form, Appleby says, “Like they didn't already know. Gits.” The militants are taken to a reeducation center, where they are lovingly and carefully taught to wait for 6 more years and not to attack any more “sinners” in the meantime.

President Bush said, “I should go down and talk with Rick. He can call back the Guard, and we can head to Washingon.”
“You mean Governor Perry?” Janice was still a little shaken and red-eyed from the last couple of deaths she had witnessed. “What if he's part of all this? Then you just put yourself in his hands.”
“She's right, Mr. President.” Jake had a small bag with the few things that Kevin had been carrying on him, and was moving the three of them back to the car they had taken from the Crawford compound. “Our best bet is to get you to the resistance being led by Senator Kerry in New Mexico.”
The president's face took on a sour look. “Leading a resistance, huh? Typical.”
“He does become the president next month.” Janice tried to contain the smirk she wanted to give him.
“I guess that's why they did this now.” Bush's expression grew even more bitter. “Wanted to take control with my security double while I was still in office.”
Janice looked like she had just had a line ticced on a mental checklist. “You have a security double?”
“Yep.” He climbed into the front seat of the sedan. Jake took the driver's seat and Janice climbed into the back. “Kind of a shock when they brought him in to tell me he was going back to Washington as me. Didn't even try offering me the job.”
Janice felt compelled to ask, “Would you have taken it?”
The two of them locked eyes for several seconds before he answered her, “I s'pose not. Would have been nice to have been offered, is all.”
“Mm-hhm.”
Jake drove out of the hospital and headed towards the highway. “Wherever we go, we need to keep public and loud. As long as people know we got the president with us, we're OK. If somebody tries to get him away from us, or get us all someplace isolated, we make a loud noise. Y'all understand?” They both nodded. “We need someplace where people love the president, but probably aren't part of the coup.”
Janice picked up the small bag with Kevin's possessions. “We needed to check on his dog, anyway.”

Alternate Historian's Note: I promised you a collection, and we are working on it – but real life is getting in the way. Fortunately, the worst part of the real-life problems we were having has been resolved. I have found new employment (yay!). We're going to aim for an April release for the collection, and will make more announcements about it as we draw closer to actually making that a reality. And, speaking of April, our April Fool's Day Contest is almost over! Today is the deadline for you to email us up to 3 entries for an alternate April 1st ; we will post the best 10, with your own credit and link to your website (if you have one). My lovely Co-Historian said that if we can get 30 entrants, we can offer an ultimate winner a complimentary TIAH mug, but we only have 5 entrants right now! Today is the final day! Get those entries in now! If you are one of the entrants, please watch your email for news of your appearance on April 1st.

in 1798, the Illuminati found the nation that becomes their seat of power, the Helvetic Republic of Switzerland, from the old Swiss Confederation in the Alps. Under their guise of neutrality, the Swiss become the secret repository of treasure from all over the world, as well as artifacts that the Illuminated Ones deem too powerful or controversial for the world to see. Their intentions were revealed when they took control of the German and Italian governments in the Great War of 1914, forming the Central European Empire. That one of Europe's smallest nations could become so powerful so suddenly aroused the curiosity of the other great powers of Europe, who turned on the CEE in the general chaos of the Great War. Unfortunately for them, the power of the Illuminati was not to be denied, and the CEE expanded by consuming Austria-Hungary, half of France, and a huge chunk of Russia. The remaining European governments sued for peace in 1921, which was agreed to by the Swiss Emperor in order for his operatives to infiltrate the leadership of nations farther afield – specifically, the US, China and India. Once in place, general revolutions were spurred across the world by Illuminati agents operating as “home-grown” revolutionaries. Their power became complete in time for the Great Heavenly Convergence on December 31st, 1999, when they faced the only thing that could threaten their plans – the Knights Templar of Great Britain, led by the reborn King Arthur.

The Announcement

Placeholder for the AH's entry: Little difficulty getting up this morning – here's Steve's entries for the day, and mine will be up tonight.

Erich von Manstein"Preussische Feldmarschälle meutern nicht (Prussian Field Marshals do not mutiny.) "
~ Frequent saying, repeated weeks before he shot Hitler.
Erich von Manstein - Generalfeldmarschall
Generalfeldmarschall
Von Manstein argued with Hitler about overall strategy on the Eastern Front, advocating an elastic, mobile defense. He was prepared to cede territory, attempting to make the Soviet forces either stretch out too thinly or to make them advance too fast so that they could be attacked on the flanks with the goal of encircling them. Hitler ignored Manstein's advice and continued to insist on static warfare. Because of these frequent disagreements, von Manstein publicly advocated that Hitler relinquish control and leave the management of the war to professionals, starting with the establishment of the position of commander-in-chief in the East (Oberbefehlshaber Ost). Hitler, however, rejected this idea numerous times, fearing that it would weaken his hold on power.

On 19th February 1943 at Zaparozhe, German-occuped USSR Hitler made repeated anti-semitic references to Manstein during a military conference calling him a coward in front of Generals Keitel and Jodl, provoking the Generalfeldmarschall into shooting him dead.

Quickly assuming the leadership mantle, Manstein said ”First, we must dispose of the carrion here, then devise a story to account for it in suitably heroic style..I see no reasonable hope of us winning the present campaign, let us make sure we do not lose it”.

The full story of how Manstein fought the Russians to a stalemate in the East, and then repelled Allied invasions in France and Italy is described by the journalist Harry Turtledove in his masterpiece Ready for the Fatherland. A synopsis of Manstein's differences with Hitler are described at Wikipedia

In 1961, a verdict was reached in the trial of Juanita Jones for the murder of American Soul and R&B singer Jackie Wilson. Although married to Frida Hood since 1951, Wilson was a notorious womanizer and was allegedly shot dead by one of his alleged lovers, Juanita Jones, on February 15, 1961, in a jealous rage as he returned to his apartment with another woman, fashion model Harlean Harris, an ex-girlfriend of singer Sam Cooke. In order to protect his reputation, his management concocted a story that Jones was an obsessed fan who threatened to shoot herself, and that Wilson's intervention concluded in his being shot. Astonishingly, the story was accepted, and Jones was acquited.

Huey Long"Every man a king, but no one wears a crown"
~ The Kingfish, weeks before his assassination.
Huey Long - Populist
Populist
Huey Long was shot on September 8, 1935, at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge; he died two days later at the age of 42. His last words were reportedly, "God, don't let me die. I have so much to do."

Two months prior to his death, in July 1935, Long uncovered a plot to assassinate him, which had been discussed in a meeting at New Orleans’s DeSoto Hotel. Four U.S. representatives, Mayor Walmsley, and former governors Parker and Sanders had been present. Long read what he claimed was a transcript of a recording of this meeting on the floor of the Senate.

Long had called for a third special session of the Louisiana State Legislature to begin in September 1935, and he traveled from Washington to Baton Rouge to oversee its progress.

“Patsy” Carl Austin Weiss attempted to punch Long in the Capitol building at Baton Rouge. Weiss was immediately shot some thirty times by Long's bodyguards and police on the scene, and a bullet from one of the bodyguards hit Long as intended. A synopsis of Huey Long's assassination is described at Wikipedia

De Valera
De Valera
In 1942, on the Irish Isles further reports from subversive underground newspapers in Southern England continue to fuel “the Troubles” with the Dublin Government. Today's mischief was the headline “1533 and all that” attributed to Taoiseach Éamon de Valera. His response to Churchill's call to action ( “Something ..
.. must be done”) was to say “The English must now move forward from 1533 and stop arguing about the past”. A truthful, but perhaps unhelpful reference to Henry VIII precipitous action to launch the Reformation, the event which triggered the collapse of English power.

Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria
In 2999, the mind cast for the fifth instalment of “Personality of the Triple Millennia” was run across the networks. POT3M drew a huge audience; Queen Victoria of England was the interview candidate. The context was the royal assent to an act ..
.. creating the Commonwealth of America, thus uniting separate colonies on the continent under one federal government. MC Millennia asked the sovereign under whose jurisdiction could the possession of the Turtle Island be wrongfully denied from the First Nation indigenes. “Her Majesty's Government”, snapped the Queen, “ of course, and we are not amused”. Of course authority is best carried off by blaggers using pantomime tricks such as this, and the British establishment really had the mind share when it came to the insincere projection of impudence.

In 1955, in London the Russell-Einstein Manifesto was released in the midst of the Cold War. The document highlighted the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and called for world leaders to seek peaceful resolutions to international conflict. The signatories included 11 pre-eminent intellectuals and scientists, most notably .. Betrand Russell
Betrand Russell
.. Albert Einstein, days before his death on April 18, 1955. By chance of timing, the two Heads of State in America and Russia were fresh thinkers and recent arrivals who very much sought such an outcome. At the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, held in July 1957 President Eisenhower and Secretary Khruschev made the in principle agreement to disarm in that decade. The Cold War was not yet over, but at least it was no longer threatened extinction to the species. Russell was made a Nobel Laureate in Literature, "in recognition of his varied and significant writings in which he champions humanitarian ideals and freedom of thought".

In 1962, an American spy plane pilot was freed from prison in the Soviet Union in exchange for a Russian spy jailed in the US.

Captain Francis 'Gary' Powers had been previously sentenced to 10 years in a Soviet prison after his U-2 plane was shot down over Russia in May 1960.

Gary Powers
Gary Powers' capture in 1960 caused an international crisis. Initially the American authorities believed there was no evidence left of either plane or pilot and tried to convince the President the U-2 had been a weather plane. However, the Russians then produced Mr Powers alive and well claiming he had admitted spying for the CIA. Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev demanded an apology from US President Eisenhower which was forthcoming, enabling plans for a superpower summit in Paris to go ahead. Historians believe the Eisenhower apology cut short the Cold War by as much as twenty-five years.

In 1992, the author Alex Haley died in Seattle, Washington on this day. At the funeral, Miles Davis, Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King and Malcolm X spoke warmly of the interviews Haley had conducted for Playboy magazine. It was the first time that King and X had meet in twenty-five years. Following King's narrow escape from an assassination attempt, Malcolm X had stated that the chickens have come home to roost. Both agreed that they should meet on a more regular basis, and explore ways to work together for the benefit of African American Civil Rights.

In 1954, defeated Presidential candidate Dwight Eisenhower warned against United States intervention in Vietnam. He was wasting his breath, President Douglas MacArthur had invested too much in the AsiaPac theatre to let the Viet Cong roll him and his French allies over. Brass Hat believed that the recourse to nuclear weapons in Japan was the source of American weakness, after all, had they of executed Operation Downfall as he proposed, no one would doubt their willingness to fight. Still, it did not mean that the bomb was wrong, on the contrary, he intended to drop thirty to fifty such weapons that very year in Manchuria to defeat China.

In 1840, Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. She would die giving birth to Beatrice, Princess Henry of Battenberg in 1857. In isolation with republicanism in the ascendancy, the Regent turned to his blood family in Prussia, starting the beginning of an alliance between Great Britain and Imperial Germany that would dominate the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

In 1964, American spy plane pilot Captain Francis 'Gary' Powers was freed from prison in the Soviet Union by US Special Forces. During his internment, the Cuban Missile Crisis: Second Holocaust has occured. War broke out after a senior Soviet naval captain uses a 'nuclear torpedo' against United States naval forces off the Cuban coast on October 27, 1962. The US immediately initiated airstrikes upon the Soviet missile bases inside Cuba, which succeeded in destroying most, but not all, of the completed missiles. Two remaining Soviet missiles are launched from Cuba, apparently by local commanders exercising their own launch authorities granted from Moscow rather than on a specific order approved by Moscow. The lone functioning missile destroys Washington, D.C. and kills President John F. Kennedy, Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson, and most other key decision-makers.

This act seals the Soviet Union's doom: had Kennedy survived, he might have ordered a measured response; since he didn't, surviving American generals at NORAD, upon learning that the US was under nuclear attack and that the National Command Authority was defunct, initiate the Single Integrated Operational Plan (SIOP), which orders a full-scale response before the Soviet leadership is even able to understand what has happened in Washington and begin their own strategic responses. Key Soviet strategic commands are destroyed within minutes, crippling the USSR's ability to respond to the US attack, but the immense reserves of US nuclear warheads in 1962 ensures that retaliation continues well past the destruction of any Soviet military capacity. In the course of The Two Days' War, Cuba is completely destroyed, with 95% of its population being killed; heavy radiation spreads throughout the Caribbean and also damages southern Florida. The Soviet Union is also destroyed, not just militarily crushed, with some 80-90% of its population perishing in the nuclear attacks themselves and the ensuing large-scale famines and radiation sickness. The East European countries are also severely damaged and lose a large part of their populations. The aftermath of the war results in severe, though temporary, environmental changes due to nuclear fallout. Famines occur in India and China and severe food shortages occur in Europe and North America. The US soon comes to be viewed as malefactor rather than victim, and eventually becomes completely isolated and ostracised in the post-war world and is accused of having perpetrated genocide, the 'Second Holocaust'

Stephen R. DonaldsonIn 1968, Stephen Reeder Donaldson languished in Vietnam. By inclination a conscientious objector, he had been compelled to serve in the armed forces.

Much later, and after dropping out of his Ph.D. program and moving to New Jersey in order to write fiction, Donaldson made his publishing debut with the first 'Covenant' trilogy in 1977. That enabled him to move to a healthier climate. He now lives in New Mexico.

Donaldson's two year compulsory military duty would be the deep undercurrent of his escapist fantasy writing. In 'The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever', the protagonist was a leper struggled with disempowerment in a Land he did not really believe in.
