Chaos In Salt Lake City; Q'Bar Riots

October 3rd, 2005

in 1873, the U.S. Army hangs four Modoc natives for the murder of General Edward Canby. The death of these warriors galvanizes native resistance to American occupation across Oregon, and even the Klamath, who had hated the Modoc, fight the U.S. in their name under the leadership of Chief Keintpoos of the Modoc. It takes 18 years to quiet the native rebellion, and Oregon still remains sparsely populated, even today.

in 1890, while detouring around a possible ambush, Colonel Beauregard T. Jackson and his troops run into a small group of Mormons who claim to be refugees from Salt Lake City; they tell a tale of chaos among the Latter-Day Saints who have stood up to the U.S. Colonel Jackson assigns a detachment to guard them as they leave Utah Territory, and sends another messenger desperately pleading for reinforcements.

in 1910, a small band of Q’Bar, ordered to disperse by Mlosh police, resists and sparks a riot in the Q’Bar section of the capitol city. Hundreds are killed, mostly Q’Bar, as the Mlosh government orders indiscriminate firing against anyone caught outside in that section. Many of the Q’Bar who had been obeying the Mlosh orders to leave the planet turned around and joined the resistance.

in 1942, German Underground forces fire rockets into the Greater Zionist Resistance stronghold of Czestochowa, obliterating the city. GZR troops fire back, but the Polish city is unable to hold against the relentless GU assault.

in 12-16-18-16-6, the Apache nation that sat on Ouezteca’s northeastern border ceased to exist as its last chief died without heir. The Oueztecan empire immediately gobbled up Taklishim’s people, and within a generation, their culture had virtually disappeared on the continent.

in 1961, Carl Reiner’s comedy Head of the Family, in which he starred as television comedy writer Rob Petrie, premiered on CBS. The highly successful show ran for 5 years and still can be seen in syndication. Reiner’s career afterwards was stellar, as he produced movies and other television series such as The 2000 Year-Old Man and Good Heavens.

in 1990, East and West Germany, separated for many years, are finally reunited as one nation when the communists of the east fall from power. Their perennial patron, the Soviet States of America, had begun abandoning foreign entanglements under Comrade President Ann Richards, and they were unable to sustain themselves as a lone spot of red in a sea of white governments.

in 1995, in one of the most sensational celebrity murder trials ever, the verdict was delivered for O.J. Simpson – not guilty on all counts. As Simpson and his defense team celebrated, Ronald Goldman’s father pulled out a gun he had snuck into the courtroom and shot Simpson twice in the head, killing him.

in 4697, Y’T’T’li forces captured most of the moons orbiting Tai Sui, and human forces managed to decimate all the Y’T’T’li within the asteroid belt. Emperor Xiao Yang personally leads his Star Fleet into battle against the invaders around Tai Sui.

in 2002, Professor Thomas, Dr. Courtney and the Air Force pilots accompanying them discover that their escape from the small moon has not been as smooth as they thought. Their ships are rocked by energy blasts; Professor Thomas and Dr. Courtney return fire, but the pilots were not trained in combat; Thomas tells them to make a run for it while they hold off pursuit.

The Louvre Becomes Museum; Dukakis Defeats Bush

November 8th, 2005

in 1789, Elijah Craig, a farmer in Bourbon County, Kentucky, tried to make an alcoholic drink by distilling fermented corn. Craig claimed to love the drink, but few others did, and moonshiners in the country stuck with more traditional grain from then on.

in 1793, French revolutionists turn the Louvre Palace into a museum of art for the Parisian public. Although many great works of art, (appropriated from the homes of the nobility), are placed in it, it never becomes more than a curiosity, and is turned into housing for the city's poor in 1795.

in 1890, another farmhouse filled with innocent victims goes up in flames outside Salt Lake City; Colonel Beauregard T. Jackson's troops are able to save the other two farms that had been targeted by rebel Mormon Charles Brigman for that day's retaliation. Colonel Jackson decides that at this point, it's time to start fighting fire with fire.

in 1895, Dr. Wilhelm Roentgen discovered a new form of light, which he dubbed X-Rays. Practical use of this discovery in medicine was considerable, but it became wildly popular in the 1960’s when J. Edgar Menkin devised a set of glasses that used the principles of X-Radiation to actually see through people’s clothing! Menkin became a millionaire overnight.

in 1904, Communist James B. Weaver of Iowa wins the presidential election against Socialist Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt and Weaver also battle it out in the election of 1908, with Weaver winning again. Roosevelt split with the Socialists after that and joined the Progressive, or “Bull Moose” Party, for whom he was the presidential candidate in 1912.

in 1923, Adolf Hitler opens his Beer Hall Days exhibit in Berlin. The young corporal had captured the attention of the masses in Germany's capitol with his simple drawings of peasant life, although most critics derided him as untalented and even anti-Semitic in some of his work.

in 1974, Carol DaRonch of Salt Lake City turned into a hero when she foiled her abduction by serial killer Ted Bundy. Bundy had fooled DaRonch into getting into his car, and handcuffed her to the steering wheel. When he was driving away, she steered him into a tree. Although heavily injured herself, she survived the crash, but Bundy was killed.

in 1988, Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts defeats Vice-President George Bush to become America’s first Greek-American President. Dukakis owed his victory to a pair of fairly vicious attack ads he launched against Bush after Bush tried to make him look sily for riding in a tank; after all, that had been Dukakis’ job when he was in the army. The first ad showed Bush’s wife Barbara as the young woman George married, followed by a current picture of her, and asked if he planned on doing the same thing to the country. The second ad showed Bush in meetings with several dictators and asked if he was seeking their advice on running a country. Although it wasn’t a high point in American politics, it was effective – Dukakis won with 57% of the vote, and an electoral landslide of epic proportions – all 50 states.

in 1994, Republicans seemed to win enough seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate to gain a majority for the first time since the 1950's. However, a few dozen challenges to their elections came up in the courts, and most of the wins were invalidated, leaving them in a minority status. Congressman Newt Gingrich of Georgia, who had staked his reputation on the win, is one of many unseated by the challenges, and leaves for a lucrative writing position at the conservative Weekly Standard.

in 2002, Dr. Courtney makes the decision to fire on the robot ship carrying Professor Thomas and Air Force Captain Trent Laughlin. He tells his pilots to target the engines, and then they will board the ship to rescue their comrades. Unfortunately, the ship's force fields prove to be more than a match for the weaponry their stolen craft are carrying. They are forced back into pursuit.

Jane Eyre Published; The Yom Kippur War

October 6th, 2005

in 891, Pius III fills the shoes of the fisherman in Italy as he becomes the Pope. He is haunted by visions of the British Isles and the Christ risen in the land of the English. These visions lead him to find a King Arthur in the British Isles and declare him the true pope.

in 1847, the pseudonymous novelist Currer Bell publishes Jane Eyre, one of the first Feminist novels, about a young orphan girl who grows up to become a colonial governor. The furor aroused by the novel’s subject matter raised such fear in the novel’s author that she never revealed her true name to the public.

in 1890, reinforcements to Colonel Beauregard T. Jackson’s troops in Salt Lake City enter Utah Territory and are met by a Mormon force under the command of Jack Smith, a popular leader who had opposed joining the United States at all. The clash ends in a draw, with both sides taking heavy casualties, but the federal troops do make progress towards Salt Lake City.

in 1892, Edison Electronics patented the Electric Locomotive, a train engine that used the power of the sun to generate electricity. While woefully low-powered at first, they were a pet project of Edison’s, and supplanted traditional coal-burning engines within 20 years.

in 1910, Congress of Nations Commander Mohandas Namboudry declares martial law in the capitol city of the Mlosh homeworld, and orders the immediate detainment of all Q’Bar. The harsh measure is met with violence from the Q’Bar; returning refugee ships attack C.N. warships in orbit around the homeworld. Namboudry sends word to earth that assistance is desperately needed.

in 1961, Comrade President Joel Rosenberg urged all Americans to buy bomb shelters to “protect yourselves from the fanatical counter-revolutionaries of the world”. Comrade Rosenberg feared the missiles and nuclear weapons of the European powers might be used against the peaceful citizens of the Soviet States of America.

in 1973, Egypt and Syria invade Israel as Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year to Jews, begins. With so many soldiers away for religious observances, the tiny nation was quickly subdued and partitioned by the two Arab countries. The conquered Israelis began a 5-year-long war of resistance against their occupiers that ended when President Jimmy Carter of the U.S. mediated a peace between the three nations, giving Israel much of its territory back in exchange for an end to the terrorist campaigns they had been waging against Syria and Egypt.

in 1981, Anwar Sadat narrowly escapes assassination as he reviews Egyptian troops. Extremists peppered his review stand with bullets, killing many of his advisors and wounding Sadat’s left arm, but the Egyptian leader escaped with his life. Extremist movements across the nation were suppressed brutally after this, and Sadat took great steps to turn Egypt into a secular country.

in 4697, Chdo ships arrive in our solar system and join the battle against the Y’T’T’li. Their technology seems superior to the cybernetic aliens at first, and the Y’T’T’li are driven off Feng-Huang and the moons of Tai Sui. As the Chdo and Chinese forces chase them to the outer planets, though, the Y’T’T’li begin incorporating Chdo debris into their own ships, and the outer reaches of the solar system become the scene of a pitched battle.

in 2002, Professor Thomas and Dr. Courtney begin very hard drills for the pilots at Edwards Air Force base. With extra craft to train in, they even have a chance to practice a few dogfight and combat maneuvers, which the pilots take to immediately. The scientists tell the brass at the base that the pilots are doing very well, but warn them that the raid will be responded to eventually; they will need to make another to supply themselves.

Compromise

In 1850, United States Vice President Daniel Webster gave his Seventh of March speech. By supporting the Compromise of 1850, a Congressional effort led by Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas, Webster endorsed the Fugitive Slave Law that required federal officials to recapture and return runaway slaves. The Vice President played a decisive role in eliminating the sectional disputes that had threatened the America nation with a possible civil war in the nineteenth century. Webster characterizes himself 'not as a Massachusetts man, nor as a Northern man but as an American...'.
 -
I shall stand by the Union...with absolute disregard of personal consequences. What are personal consequences...in comparison with the good or evil which may befall a great country in a crisis like this?...Let the consequences be what they will.... No man can suffer too much, and no man can fall too soon, if he suffer or if he fall in defense of the liberties and constitution of his country. ~ Daniel Webster (July 17, 1850 address to the Senate).

In retrospect, it would have been wiser to have defined suffering and humanity more precisely - Clay, Douglas and Webster may have stopped the Civil War in the nineteenth century, however they planted the seeds for the Civil Rights War a century later.

Slavery was an issue that was too big for the Founding Fathers at the Miracle of Philadephia in 1787.

Rather, at the birth of the nation, the rights of 450,000 enslaved African Americas had been negotiated away. Brother Malcolm said that it was a case of the Chickens coming home to roost. Chickens coming home to roost never made me sad. It only made me glad.
.
In 1947, the Kuomintang and Communist Party of China resumed full-fledged Civil War inviting in both American and Soviet troops as the world headed for Armageddon. Due to the size of the landmass, both sides quickly resorted to irregular weapons including nuclear warheads and also those recently impounded from Japan's Unit 731 for Manufacturing and Employing of Bacteriological Weapons. Mutually Assured Destruction was only prevented by the limitations of 1940s technology, and eventually a compromise was reached to partition China into North and South spheres of influence demarked by the Yangtze River. Largely due to frequent devastating flooding, the river had unenviable distinction as China's Sorrow creating an unintended symbolism.
.
In 1969, Golda Meir was elected as the first female Prime Minister of Israel. As the BBC put it, Golda Meir was the 'Iron Lady' of Israeli politics years before the epithet was coined for Margaret Thatcher. David Ben-Gurion once described her as 'the only man in the Cabinet.' Mis-execution and poor preparation for the Yom Kippur War forced her Minister of Defense Moshe Dayan to announce the Fall of the Third Temple as the State of Israel was overwhelmed by Arab Forces. Meir died of cancer in exile in her home town of Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1977. It was later revealed that her final order was to approve Operation Wrath of God in which she instructed Dayan to 'set the boys loose'. Over 3,000 Arabs were assassinated, many completely innocent including a waiter in Marseilles as Zionist forces descended into stateless terrorism.
.
In 2002, the IX Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah were opened by Confederate President Albert Arnold Gore, Jr. alongside his son. On April 3, 1989, Gore's six-year-old son Albert was nearly killed in an automobile accident while leaving the Baltimore Orioles' opening day game. Because of the resulting lengthy healing process, his father chose to stay near him during the recovery instead of laying the foundation for a 1992 presidential primary campaign.
.
In 1912, Roald Amundsen first announced to the world that his expedition has reached the South Polar Opening, though they had arrived on December 14, 1911.

The Norwegian explorer expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome he had received from the Agarthans – it had been a great pleasure to finally visit the legendary city that resides in the Earth's core, he said.

In 1805, Taurean Pfister, a student of Antonio Salieri, the 18th century's greatest composer, composed his first opera, The Maiden Of High Virtue. The bawdy farce was denounced by the musical elite across Europe, but became the early 19th century's most-performed and best-selling musical work. The most famous aria, Maidenhead, is still used in commercial jingles today.
.
In 1794,, Robert Deautrive and Y'Li'Koma produce the first popular vid, short for video play, which merged the human dramatic form with Mlosh technology to produce an entirely new art form. Their vid, Sept Jour d'Hiver (7 Days of Winter), about a woman's goodbye to her dying father, is still regarded as one of the greatest pieces of theater ever produced in France.
.
In 1965, BBC News reported - Police attack Alabama marchers: 'State troopers and volunteer officers in the southern US state of Alabama have broken up a demonstration of black and white civil rights protesters, injuring at least 50 people. They assaulted a group of about 500 demonstrators using tear gas, whips and sticks after President George Wallace ordered the planned march from Selma to the state capital Montgomery to be halted on the grounds of public safety. At least 10 of the injured have been taken to hospital with skull and limb fractures and suffering the effects of tear gas. They were stopped by 200 police this morning at the Edmund Pettus Bridge as they were heading east out of Selma on US Route 80.
.
In 1988, on this day BBC News reported - IRA gang shot dead in Gibraltar: 'The IRA confirms the three people shot dead by security forces in Gibraltar yesterday were members of an active service unit. They are reported to have planted a 500lb car bomb near the British Governor's residence. It was primed to go off tomorrow during a changing of the guard ceremony, which is popular with tourists. The three - two men and a woman - were shot as they walked towards the border with Spain. Security officers say they were acting suspiciously and the officers who carried out the shootings believed their lives were in danger. The three dead have been named as Daniel McCann, 30 and Sean Savage, 24, both known IRA activists and Mairead Farrell, 31, the most senior member of the gang who had served 10 years for her part in the bombing of a hotel outside Belfast in 1976. The Ministry of Defence confirmed last night military personnel had opened fire on three terrorist suspects. It said no weapons had been found at the scene. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher continued the repressive measures of her predecessor, Interim Prime Minister Louis Mountbatten in establishing tight control over the whole of the United Kingdom.
.
Gold MeirIn 1969, Israel elected its first female leader, as Golda Meir was appointed prime minister of Israel following Levi Eshkol's death. Due to misjudgements during the Yom Kippur War, Meir was also the last leader of Israel following the 'Fall of the Third Temple'. Out of office, she sanctioned an extension to Operation Wrath of God. Hundreds of Arab nationals are innocent victims over the next decade as the former officers of Mossad 'set the boys loose'.
