A Rather Unlucky Day

in 1891, the Farmers Council in Topeka informs former President Grover Cleveland that they cannot agree to his request that they surrender control of Kansas back to the former government. “This is the worst possible decision you could make,” Cleveland tells them. “We disagree,” Jerry 'Sockless' Simpson tells him. They issue a call for all able-bodied men of the state to stand ready to defend their homes against “the unjust attack by the false president, Benjamin Harrison.”

in 1998, Central European Imperial spies are brought to England and placed at the command of Prime Minister Oliver Pembroke. The Illuminati in Switzerland rejoice at this first move in suborning the legitimate government of England – after centuries of trying, they feel that they finally have the British right where they want them. Merl Myrddin, Arthur Pendrake's chief advisor and a former Illuminati himself, finds out about the British government's unexpected help and tells Arthur that this must become public knowledge quickly. He prepares the evidence he has and they arrange for a rally the next day.

Marten Von Buren
Marten Von Bure..
In 1838 8th President of the United States Martin Van Buren convened an emergency meeting in the White House. Van Buren summoned all of his administrative experience from his previous appointments as 10th United States Secretary of State & 8th Vice President of the United States to put over his point with the maximum gravitas. ..
.. 'Gentleman, speaking from my many years in office ' he began ' I can tell you with complete candour that unless we act now, we face the prospect of a civil war right here in the United States. Secessionist pressures in the Southern States are threatening to dissolve the Union. And the rallying point will be this unconscionable extermination of the red Indian!'. Gasps of dismay were heard from prominent members of his cabinet. 'Yes its true!' said Van Buren slamming his fist against the table dramatically.

In 1972 the Universal Postal Union decided to recognize the Republic of China as the only legitimate Chinese representative. In 1912 owners of the near-bankrupt White Star Line braced themselves for the sinking of their 'unsinkable' flagship in three days time. However, the owners could not afford to let their pride get in the way because White Star Line was teetering on the verge of bankruptcy The owners were executing an insurance job they had ..
.. played out many times before, RMS Tayleur in 1854, RMS Atlantic in 1873, SS Naronic in 1893 and most recently RMS Republic in 1909. Trouble was that the cost-cutting had gone too far, the ship did not carry enough lifeboats for all her passengers and crew. The owners had dispatched a ship to the site of the collision beforehand with 3000 blankets on board for the survivors, they could only pray it arrived in good time.

In 1987 Portugal and the Republic of China signed an agreement in which the lease on Macau was extended a further 100 years to 2099. A Note About A Certain Day

The state of TIAH

April 17th, 2007

Digg this

Alternate Historian's Note: We started experiencing a spike in visits yesterday, with a rather large percentage of that spike going to one particular page on our site – the page titled Hitler's Birthday. It has, rather disturbingly, always been a popular destination here, but we've never seen as huge a number of hits on that page like occurred yesterday – in fact, it's still going on today. I have been hoping that it's not because we've gotten ourselves on some Nazi mailing list, but because Hitler's birthday is coming up and we appear 5th in a Google search when you look those words up. It's one of those odd things you accept when you run an alternate history site. Still, this is the largest number of hits I've seen on that page since it went up, and I can't help but think it's caused by something. There was a horrific incident yesterday that people might have thought was sparked by the approaching anniversary – this date seems to bring out lunatics time and time again (there is some dispute as to whether Hitler was born on the 19th or the 20th). It disturbs me that people are drawn to that page, because the one section of the Internet's population that I get threats from comes from those who take Hitler rather more seriously than I do, and I hate the thought of more of them coming here. I haven't been inundated in email or comments calling me various anti-Semitic slurs, so there's hope that we don't have a new Nazi wave coming through the hallowed halls of TIAH. I guess we'll have to wait and see. While I worry, please enjoy our Guest Historian's work...

In 2165 almost two hundred years had passed at Venice Beach since the fateful meeting of Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek. The teenagers who played basket ball on this day knew nothing of the formation of The Doors. All they knew was basket ball. The great game had been played at Venice Beach long before the fateful meeting, and would continue to be played for a short time to come.

In 1972 the Conference in Admiralty House began. In the Chair was Interim Prime Minister Lord Louis Mountbatten and his Deputy Ord Wingate, the delegates were the senior figures in the military government who had ruled Britain for the past five years. Fundamentally, Mountbatten reflected, the officer corps had not come to ..
.. terms with Britain's new position in the world. They had won the war and lost the peace. It was maddening to beat the Japanese in Burmese jungles, yet be defeated by the invisible movements of world trade.  But there it was .

In 1942 Windsor, Montgomery and Auchinlech take a step further. The attempt to establish the Axis Powers of Anglo-America had ended in failure. In 1912 on this day agents of the near-bankrupt White Star Line were paid to supply Journalists with a number of stories in the bars and pubs of Belfast and New York. One story was that the Titanic was carrying a cursed Egyptian mummy. The mummy, nicknamed Shipwrecker, after changing hands several times, and causing many ..
.. terrible things to each of its owners, exacted its final revenge by sinking the famous ship. Another story was that several Catholic shipbuilders reportedly walked off the job in protest when they noticed horrible blasphemies against Catholicism and the Virgin Mary spray-painted by Protestant workers on parts of the ship. Yet another that the hull number 390904 which, when seen in a mirror or written using mirror writing, looks like 'no pope'. And the fourth story was the truth, smuggled out in lies to conceal it – the switch with the RMS Olympic. the two sister ships had been swapped at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in order for the near-bankrupt White Star Line to sink the irreparably damaged sister ship, the RMS Olympic.

In 1945 on this day in Strassfurt, Germany, U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Boris T. Pash seized half a ton of uranium, foiling Soviet Union plans to build an atomic bomb. The mission was to prevent the Soviets, previously Allies but now a potential threat, from capturing any scientists and putting them to work at their own atomic research plants. Pash's efforts set the Soviet atomic program back a decade, by which time, America had established firm control of third world countries with Europeans in full retreat at "end of empire".

Taxes & Death

April 15th, 2006

in 2015 AUC, the Roman Republic declares this day as the universal day of taxation; all taxes due for the year are to be collected. Although it has the virtue of efficiency, the citizens of Rome grow to hate the day with a passion.

in 1791, President Benjamin Franklin of the United States of America passes an income tax through the Congress. The wealthiest citizens of the nation are required to give 10 percent of their income to the government, “that we may truly fulfill the promise of our constitution, to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.”

in 1912, the RMS Titanic, proudest ship of the White Star line, sinks in the north Atlantic ocean after being struck by an iceberg. Fortunately for the passengers and crew aboard, the captain had insisted on a full compliment of life rafts before sailing from England, and had conducted regular emergency drills during the voyage. Although this had vexed the White Star staff aboard the ship, they were more than mollified when not a single life was lost in the disaster.

in 1952, much to their surprise, Velma Porter and Mikhail von Heflin draw back his ancient ancestor to earth, and open a dimensional portal at the same time. In the struggle to hurl her in, Miss Porter is almost sucked in with her, but the Baron is able to pull her out of the portal, wrenching off her left foot. Miss Porter takes strength from von Heflin to survive, but is unable to regrow her foot.

in 1955, the huge restaurant empire of Kroc’s began with a single fast-food joint in Illinois as Ray Kroc tested out his theory that people would buy lesser quality food, as long as they could get it quickly. Kroc’s restaurants are in every country in the world today, and have sold billions of hamburgers.

in 1959, Comrade Fulgencio Batista visits the Soviet States of America after his successful revolution against the old Communist leadership of Cuba. While America had initially supported him during his rebellion, he is suspiciously close to some of the European monarchies, and after he returns to Cuba, he openly pronounces himself a capitalist. America severs all ties with the island nation and places an embargo on them.

in 1985, the new Republican majority in Congress allows President Reagan to abolish the income tax and replace it with a flat 17 percent tax on all goods and services. The loss of income sends the national deficit soaring to heights undreamt of, plunging American into a depression that takes the rest of the world with it. In the elections of the next year, 9 out of 10 incumbents are defeated, and a new leftist majority reinstates the income tax and impeaches Reagan.

in 1992, hotel owner Leona Helmsley managed to settle her case with the government by paying all of her back taxes with interest. Although the DA had initially sought prison time, Helmsley so charmed the court that he readily agreed to her offer, dubbing her “the nicest lady I've ever seen in court.”

in 1996, the Egyptians captured Puerto Vallarta on the Mexican coast. The American Constitutionalists propping up the puppet Mexican government start to abandon the nation and leave the fighting to their Mexican allies; the Mexicans, long chafing under American rule, tend to welcome the allied forces as much as fight them.

in 2004, several ships arrive on Titan to collect the Projection Virii for the new Sheridan Corporation, which is planning to domesticate and use them as a holographic information transmitter. The new containment procedures work well, and they are able to return to earth without losing any ships.

Queen Elizabeth II Crowned In Exile; The Sun Shines At Night In Hanoi

June 2nd, 2004

in 4561, General Ka-Liet of the Viet forces in Hanoi managed to draw a sizable portion of the Chinese forces into a trap; the Viet had managed to capture one of the Sun Bombs that the Emperor's greatest scientists had been working on, and after drawing some 50,000 troops after him into the countryside around the city, he set it off. In one brief flash, the Chinese forces had been cut by a quarter.

in 1882, singer Carla Lambert was born. She caught the eye of Thomas Edison's movie company, Dynamic Pictures, and starred in several films for them. Rumors of an affair between her and Edison were heatedly denied, but she did spend quite a bit of time at his mansion in New Jersey.

in 1922, the Titanic, a huge luxury ocean liner of the White Star line in England, was retired. While it sailed, it was touted as unsinkable, a reputation that White Star used to become the top cruise line of the day.

in 1953, Elizabeth Windsor, daughter of exiled King George VI, was crowned Elizabeth II after her father's passing. The ceremony, held at the British Government-In-Exile's compound in Washington, D.C. was brief and untelevised. Elizabeth herself lived a reclusive life and would die without returning to England, which remained under Nazi control until her son's return in 1982.

in 1891, Major Mark Wainwright receives a telegram from Washington with orders to take command of as many Missouri militiamen as he can organize, and head back into Topeka to rescue former President Grover Cleveland. Major Wainwright begins gathering men and planning his assault. Meanwhile, in Topeka, the Farmer's Council deliberates what Cleveland said to them the day before, and what they can do to stave off the US forces that they are certain are on the way to crush them.

in 1998, on Easter Sunday, the followers of Arthur Pendrake flood the UK's Catholic churches, while the Church of England stands remarkably empty. Prime Minister Oliver Pembroke and the Queen herself sit in a church with only other governmental officials and a few media representatives, while Arthur takes in a Welsh service in a church that is overflowing with worshipers. No violence is recorded, although there is an abundance of tension in cities where Catholic churches stand near C of E institutions. After this rather stark illustration of how thin their support is, the prime minister and the queen discuss what can be done about this “little Welshman,” as the queen calls Pendrake.

RMS Titanic
RMS Titanic
In 1912 owners of the near-bankrupt White Star Line braced themselves for the sinking of their flagship in three days time. In the best naval tradition, it was to be an ill-disguised insurance job that was going to end in a catastrophic and unnecessary loss of life. One can only imagine that Lloyds of London are doing a ..
.. great job for owners to go to such lengths to make false insurance claims. However, three days before, the owners have become aware of a little problemette. A big problem to be completely candid. In their efforts to cut costs, the owners really had gone too far – the ship did not carry enough lifeboats for all her passengers and crew. White Star dispatched a ship to the site of the collision beforehand with 3000 blankets on board for the survivors, hoping that they were not alerting the world to the crime.

Aethelred The Very Unready; American Withdrawal From Guatemala

April 14th, 2006

in 979, King Aethelred the Unready proved just how unready he was when he fell to Danish intrigue, placing the English under the crown of Denmark. The Danish Empire conquered the rest of the British Isles over the next century, and threatened to conquer the whole of the continent in the 1200’s.

in 1799, Italian Emperor Buonaparte declares that he will reestablish the kingdom of Israel, and conquers Jerusalem to make his point. The Jews of Europe begin flocking to their ancestral home at the Emperor’s request.

in 1865, Giles Nelson, an officer in the Army taking leave from the Civil War in Washington, D.C., foils an assassination attempt on President Lincoln at the Ford Theatre. Nelson had noticed a suspicious character trying to sneak into the president’s box and stopped him. After a brief struggle, he subdued the assassin, southern sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln, decorating him later, called him “my personal saviour”.

in 1902, French scientists Marie and Pierre Curie isolate the miracle element of Curium. Its many properties include a healing ability that cures the couple of the cancer that has been killing them since they began their work in radioactive elements.

in 1912, lookouts manage to warn the RMS Titanic of an iceberg in time to avoid a fatal collision. The iceberg crushes part of the hull, but the ship is able to limp its way to the Canadian coast. The White Star line faced large doses of negative publicity afterwards, but at least they were able to keep up their reputation of being unsinkable.

in 1952, under the starlight of a Kenyan jungle, the Baron of Death finds an old temple that had been built to his recently-freed ancestor. Inside, he finds a faded parchment that details how she was trapped the first time; von Heflin and his lover Velma Porter spring into action to recreate the conditions that trapped her before.

in 1986, in retaliation for supposed Libyan sponsorship of terrorism, American planes bombed several targets in the African nation. Unfortunately, several of the planes were shot down, and the captured Air Force and Navy pilots were paraded through the streets of Tripoli. President Reagan called this “an unbelievable act of barbarity,” and asked Congress for a declaration of war against Libya.

in 1988, America bows to international pressure and withdraws from Guatemala after a decade-long effort to keep the socialist government in power there. Archbishop Oscar Romero moved in and established himself as the new power in the country, turning the small nation into a Catholic theocracy. The Soviet States of America, stinging from its worst military defeat since Chile, denounced Romero and started an embargo against the new Guatemalan regime.

in 1997, the Egyptian 5th Regiment joined the British Royal Marines in their push through Florida. American anti-Constitutionalists, liberated by the Allies, joined in the fighting and moved many Americans to turn against President Shephard’s forces, further weakening the Constitutionalist side.

in 2005, Dave and Jeanne Lange settle down in Washington, D.C. The newly-appointed aids to Representative Carl Worthington, who will soon be President Worthington, find that, in spite of the hectic pace of post-Claw Washington, they are more relaxed than at any time in the last few months. “I don't even have to watch the TV for signals, anymore,” Dave tells Jeanne.

Cromwell Refuses Crown; Convenient Death

April 3rd, 2006

in 1367, Henry Bolingbroke, a lesser Bishop who had been born into the distaff line of Plantaganets, was born in Lincolnshire. He seized power from the legitimate line of Popes and reigned as Pope Henry IV of the Holy British Empire from 1399 to 1413, igniting the infamous War of the Roses.

in 1657, Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, a Conqueror of the Speaker’s Line, refuses to accept the Crown of England. He has other plans, and begins assembling as many of his fellow Conquerors as he can. For his brief rule, England becomes the lifeblood of the Conqueror movement among the Children of Telka.

in 1783, author Washington Irving was born in New York City, North American Confederation. He became one of the first of the great N.A.C. vid-writers, with supernatural tales based on the legends of the area he grew up in, and modern tales of life in the great metropolis of New York.

in 1944, in the case of Smith v Allwright, the Supreme Court recognizes the common southern practice of the “White Primary”, where white citizens largely vote in one party’s primary while black citizens vote in another’s, as a fully constitutional use of freedom of assembly. Blacks protest the ruling across the south, but the southern states prove unyielding after this victory.

in 1952, Libyan soldiers attack the Berber tribe that has taken in Velma Porter and Mikhail von Heflin. The pair annihilate the Libyans, but the Berbers become wary of them after seeing their power, and so the couple move on.

in 1972, Comrade President Gus Hall orders American bombers to blow up huge portions of South Chile in response to the La Serena Offensive by the guerillos. This does little more than provide temporary revenge for the Soviet States of America, and drives many non-capitalist South Chileans onto the guerillos’ side.

in 1994, President Terreblanche’s South African forces take control of southern Tanzania and begin transporting their prisoners south to camps there. The lack of trains and other mechanized transport forced thousands of these POW’s to march through hundreds of miles of southern Africa. The Tanzanian Death March, as it became known, killed half of the POW’s who had been captured.

in 1996, former Commerce Secretary Bob Mosbacher is killed in Croatia when a plane carrying him and several business leaders is short down in the troubled Dubrovnik region. President George H.W. Bush expressed regret at the loss of his former cabinet member and friend, but many people pointed out the odd coincidence of yet another person with access to the Iran-Contra evidence dying so conveniently near the end of Bush's administration.

in 2004, as the Sheridan’s ship approaches earth, several members of the crew notice methane crabs sneaking around the ship. The doctors stop the ship and decontaminate before they land on earth, in order to keep the Projection Virii from spreading there again.

in 2005, after a couple of days of chaos in the streets, the Save Earthers are able to free both Carl Worthington and Dave Lange, along with many others, from the Claw prisons where they had been kept. They have found that some of the Claws have grown sick of earth, and are ready to leave; they make a tenuous alliance with this fifth column force inside the alien's ranks.

Timelines in today's post: the Holy British Empire, the Speaker, the Mlosh, von Heflin, The Sheridans, Communist America, the Ralph Shephard timeline and The Claw.

in 1891, the eastern Kansas border is fortified by volunteers from around the state. Major Mark Wainwright and his band of men encounter part of this fortification as they head to Topeka to free President Grover Cleveland, and the ensuing fight leaves 12 of his men dead; but he wins the engagement. By the evening, they are in Topeka and in pitched battle at the governor's mansion, where they steal the former president from the room where is being held. They fight their way out of the city, with only half of their original force left, when a stray shot hits President Cleveland in the stomach. Major Wainwright struggles with his remaining men to Kansas City and desperately searches for a doctor in the chaotic city.

in 1982, Nathaniel Strawn is born in College Station, Texas. Strawn, a mathematician by training, joined NASA's Mars Project in 2029, just in time to work on the final lander that would put his cousin, astronaut Catherine Taylor, on the Red Planet in 2034.

in 1998, a bar fight turns into the first battle of the war to unseat the Windsors, when a small group of the Royal Marines enter a bar in Swansea, Wales, that is very loyal to Arthur Pendrake. Several harsh words are exchanged, fists fly, and then the owner of the pub reaches for his hunting rifle. A marine sees him, reaches the rifle first, and shoots the older man dead. There is a moment of silence as the implications of this sink into everyone present; then, all the local pub crawlers are running home for their weapons. One of the marines pulls out a cell phone and calls back to base for help. Within the hour, the marines are wiped out by the locals, and military units are heading into Swansea. Arthur, as soon as the news hits the airwaves, puts out a call for all his followers to defend Swansea and repulse the royalists. His cold war against the Windsors has just turned hot.

Ord Wingate
Ord Wingate
In 1972 Deputy Interim Prime Minister Major General Ord Wingate, DSO reviews his report for the Conference which is to be presented at the Conference tomorrow. Ord reflects upon the state state of affairs that had let to the formation of the military government. The Labour Government had used the retreat from empire as a ..
.. reason for reducing the military and closing bases in the Far East ('East of Suez' strategy). Matters had come to a head with the financial crisis of 1967. During the disastrous 'pound in your pocket' devaluation assurances had been given to overseas investors such as the King of Saudi Arabia. The promises had not been honoured and the lion had become an ass. Senior members of the services suspected that the Labour Party was purposefully running down the size of the armed forces. Whatever the truth, by 1967, the military had been forced to act before it was too late.

In 1922 the Treaty of Rapallo was signed by Imperial Germany and Tsarist Russia re-establishing diplomatic relations between Berlin and Moscow. After the Second Franco-Prussian war, it was absolutely clear that the Triple Entente binding Russia, France and Great Britain was finished. Recognising that the window of opportunity .. in 1891, Major Mark Wainwright heads back to Topeka with 200 men at his back, determined to rescue former President Grover Cleveland at all costs. President Benjamin Harrison also asks Congress to authorize an expedition to pacify the farmer's uprising in Kansas and arrest its leader, 'Sockless' Jerry Simpson. Simpson, for his part, is busy organizing nearly 100,000 volunteers to resist the forces being brought to bear from the US government.

in 1998, the aftermath of Easter Sunday ripples across British society. “Round Table Societies”, community organizations which lend vocal support to the pretender Arthur Pendrake, spring up across the land. Parliament brings up Prime Minister Pembroke's call to outlaw them, but some members are starting to lean towards Arthur – his advisor, Merl Myrddin, apparently knew many of them personally, and was using this influence to turn them towards the Welsh challenger. Also, several of the Welsh nobles in the House of Lords turn away from the queen and towards Arthur. The royal family retreat to their country manor and plan a strategy for the first popular attack on the crown since Cromwell.

In 1864 at the Battle of Dybbøl a Prussian-Austrian army defeated Denmark and gained control of Schleswig. Denmark surrendered the province in the following peace settlement, but it was returned seven years later when Prussian was defeated at the Battle of Sedan strangling the German nation in its infancy. Both the Kaiser ..

In 1865 U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was shot in Ford's Theatre by John Wilkes Booth. Abe was seriously wounded but survived. Historians have speculated this his death would have gifted the Presidency to General Ulysses S. Grant who in 1862 had issued General Order No. 11, expelling Jews from Tennessee, Mississippi, and .. Buonaparte Conquers Jerusalem; Lincoln Assassination Attempt

April 14th, 2005

in 979, King Aethelred the Unready proved just how unready he was when he fell to Danish intrigue, placing the English under the crown of Denmark.

Inside, he finds a faded parchment that details how she was trapped the first time; von Heflin and his lover Velma Porter spring into action to recreate the conditions that trapped her before.

in 1988, America bows to international pressure and withdraws from Guatemala after a decade-long effort to keep the socialist government in power there.

Alternate Historian's Note: Today, we present our April Fools' Day Contest Winners. In the future, folks, please limit your entries to 300 words or less – a couple of these posts are a touch lengthy. After the contest winners, our Guest Historian Stephen Payne makes his regular appearance. Enjoy the day, everyone, and don't be an April Fool!

in @2900 BCE, the first advanced calendar system appears in the Sumerian city of Nippur. The day "April First" is born and fixed as the first day of the year. The "calendar riots" are unleashed, in opposition to the tendency of the rulers to control time rigidly. The unrest was quickly crushed.

In 2350 BCE, Sargon of Kish usurps the throne, and expands the Akkadian Empire to an unprecedented size: he controls all the port cities on the eastern Mediterranean coast, on the Arabian Peninsula, and Mesopotamia, including all cities along the Tigris - Euphrates valley. Sargon favored the Sumerian scribes, and made the Nippurian calendar the standard for the Empire. Hearing of Sargon's innovations, sages in the East, especially in India, begin preaching the doctrine attributed to Kalinjar, the "Destroyer of Time." Indian merchants, travelers, and sages begin infiltrating the Empire to spread the doctrine: all calendars must be destroyed, all clocks smashed, and men must be freed from the curse of human imposed time. Some argue that time itself can be destroyed.

In 1595 BCE, the more widespread Babylonian Calendar is born, based on the Sumerian system of measuring the passage of time. Again, April 1 is dubbed the first day of the year (At that time the month "April" was named "Nisanu," after the Akkadian King of the Gods, Anu). As the Babylonian Empire extends its influence, the "calendar wars" begin. People of the lower classes and priests of the various gods rebel in virtually all cities, excepting Nippur, Akkad, and Babylon, now capital of the Empire. Rioters overthrow local governments, and small armies spread out to attack cities which adhered to the concept of the calendar. Eventually all calendars are destroyed throughout the Empire.

During the Babylonian captivity, the Jewish calendar was destroyed by an alliance of Jews and Babylonians. In Egypt, the sidereal calendar system came under attack, as the teachings of Kalinjar spread into Northern Africa. People caught observing the star Sirius were put to death by some Pharaohs, and by 1330 BCE, the Pharaoh Iknaten had eradicated the calendar. Iknaten combined the doctrine of the Destroyer of Time with his belief in One Timeless God, called Aten.

The Greeks revived the calendar, until they were conquered by the Romans. Some Roman senators and consuls, inspired by Greek astronomical science, attempted to reinstitute the calendar, the so-called Julian and Gregorian experiments. They were denounced by subsequent Roman and Byzantine popular movements. The Ottoman Empire revived the calendar of the early Arab Muslims, going to the extent of using the name "Nisan"(April) to designate the first spring month. The Ottoman Turks were harkening back to earliest Babylonian calendar. The Sultans succeeded within their domains, until the revolution of the Young Turks, which destroyed the Caliphate, the Sultanate, and the Islamic calendar, once and for all.

Once freed from the calendar, mankind became capable of new advances in Ethics, Philosophy, and the pursuit of the timeless truths.

We now well understand why calendars were destroyed, along with clocks, and detailed written histories. The reasoning given by Kalinjar himself has been passed down with all the world's religious and philosophical teachings in what was called "The New Religious Supplement." The tenets were:

1. Looking to the past was harmful.

2. Looking to the past induced an exaggerated sense of self importance (people took too much pride in the achievements of their ancestors).

3. Revenge and hatred were caused by focusing on past emotions and past actions. Wars were caused by the remembrance of grievances of the races, the nations, and the sects.

4. Forgiveness and striving to forget the past are prime virtues.

5. The measurement of time was a method used by the elite to control the activity and thought of the people.

6, The absence of clocks and calendars allows for a life which is leisurely, unhurried and humane.

These tenets have become combined with the principles of all the main world religions. Believers (in Anu, in Aten, Moses, Jesus, Buddha, Lao Tze, Muhammed, and Confucius) embrace the religious supplement, though small groups still try secretly to preserve the Babylonian, Egyptian, Chinese, Hebrew, Islamic, Gregorian, and Hebrew calendars. in 1891, William Wrigley Jr. starts his own company, selling soap and baking powder. The following year, he briefly attempts to package chewing gum with his backing powder as a promotional gimmick, but it falls flat; Americans, especially kids, dislike the mouth-feel of the rubbery substance. Duly chastened, he redoubles his efforts to improve his core products. Today, nearly every home in America has a Wrigley product in its pantry or bathroom. in 1917, William Aloysius Butler took a stand against the Louisville Bluegrass Blue law, which prohibited banjo music in public on Sundays. He was arrested in a city park after a brief and violent struggle, in which several officers were physically accosted with a banjo. Later that day citizens stormed the local jail, freeing Butler. The mob was chased and finally cornered in a small farm outside of town. The event escalated into a 2 week stand off, dubbed the Bluegrass Revolution. US military forces were called in and opened fire on the Bluegrass Freedom Fighters (BFF). The BFF returned fire. After an 18 hour fire fight, all the BFF were all slaughtered. Shortly after the citizens voted to remove the Bluegrass Blue Laws from the law books. post by April Fools' Contest Winner V. Burnett

in 1930, Mahatma Gandhi speaks to Muslims at an Ulema urging communal unity, prior to the launch of his most sustained campaign of civil disobedience. In the ensuing days, Gandhi leads the Great March to the Sea, to violate the laws of the occupying British Empire. Gandhi and his followers make salt out of seawater, thus defying the British monopoly on salt.

What followed was a full fledged uprising which lead to the triumph of Gandhi's non-violent satyagraha revolution. His goal was to drive out the British and establish an Indian government based on ahimsa (non-violence). Communal differences were put aside, and the people of India united to defy a wide array of British imposed laws. Countless leaders were detained by the British, in order to break the movement. The wave of arrests only incited the people more, until Gandhi himself was jailed. British authorities outlawed Gandhi's pro-Independence Congress Party, and banned all its publications. In response, the people created their own congresses and published their own pamphlets and bills throughout the country. When the government relented, it was too late. After the release of Gandhi, the movement continued, until India became ungovernable.

By the end of 1931, the Gandhi-Irwin pact was signed. Colonial control was so thoroughly thwarted that withdrawal of all British troops from India was completed in the following 18 months.

During the mid and later 30's, the success of the Indian non-violent revolution made an impact on the rest of the world. In South Africa, where Gandhi had begun his work, Indians and Black Africans united to create the first multi-racial African democracy. In Italy, the trade union movement re-awakened, and pursued a campaign of non-violent civil resistance which resulted in the ouster of Benito Mussolini.

Meantime, Gandhi traveled to Aden, Marseilles, London, Helsinki, New York, San Francisco, Tokyo, Peking, Singapore, and Rangoon, spreading his gospel of non-violence, socialism, and compassion throughout the world.

In 1931, the Spanish Revolution had erupted, with advocates of Mussolini-style fascism clashing with syndicalist movements, social democrats, and Leninists. The popularity of Gandhi's methods influenced the trade unionists and the cooperativists, most of whom relied on the non-violent techniques, but many fascists and hardline communists continued to act violently. Spain was thus forced into a prolonged civil war. Events there were largely influenced by the subsequent failures of fascism in Europe and Leninism in Russia.

The Gandhi-Tolstoy connection had become popularized throughout Russia, and the Doukhobors, Christian (Quaker-like) non-violent religionists, had organized quietly and secretly, gaining strength since the death of Tolstoy, in 1910. When Lenin died and Trotsky took power, an alliance had formed between the Two Tendencies: The platform communists and factory committees on the one hand, and the bureaucrats along with the vanguard communists on the other hand, managed to prevent the triumph of either a rigid totalitarianism, or a decentralized loose association. The Doukhobors, after 1932, exercised considerable influence, transforming Russia from a society in ideological flux to one which embraced the Tolstoyan non-violent ideal and the Gandhian practical plan. Gandhi was finally able to visit Moscow in 1937, after the most hardline communist elements had left government, or softened their stances.

In Germany, the rise of a Mussolini style fascist party presented a danger to the whole of Europe. Adolph Hitler was greatly disillusioned by the fall of Mussolini, and frustrated by the slow pace of his ally in Spain, General Franco. Hitler decided to concentrate his efforts on the domestic regeneration of Germany. When he focused on the so-called Jewish question, and pushed for a boycott of Jewish owned stores, he was opposed by an alliance of Jewish and German shopkeepers. The antisemitic operatives of the Nazi party failed because virtually every single store was marked "Juden", so that no organized boycott could be sustained. Not long after this, the famous Rosenstrasse incident occurred: hundreds of male Jews married to non-Jewish woman were rounded up for deportation or even execution; and in response, the women organized around the clock non-violent protests. Hitler himself gave the order for these Jews to be released. Soon, Jewish and non-Jewish Germans were getting married by the tens of thousands, Christians were attending synagogues, Jews were attending churches, as the slogan "I am a German, a Christian, and a Jew" became widespread (in imitation of Gandhi's affirmation: "I am a Muslim, a Hindu, a Christian, and a Jew, and so are we all").

The philosophers of fascism shrugged. Giovanni Gentile said, "We thought extreme violence against our opponents would continue to work. However, when Mussolini killed thousands, and Hitler killed more, the truth became obvious over time: Violence is a completely impractical tool to use against the followers of Tolstoy and Gandhi. Violence only works against those who offer violent resistance. The non-violent resisters, when organized, sap the will of the man of violence, and tax his conscience. Today we wonder if even Caesar or Napoleon could have conquered such men."

The stagnation of fascism in Europe, and erosion of Leninism in Russia, gave courage to the non- violent resisters in Spain. Franco continued to fight against the Loyalist elements (those loyal to the Republic of 1931), but international brigades of civil resisters, from India, Italy, Scandinavia, Britain, and America, managed to quell the incendiary flames. Franco killed thousands, who engaged in non- violent non-cooperation in fascist controlled areas. Conservative Churchmen, who were originally Franco's allies, went over to the other side, and joined the ranks of those who had "turned the other cheek." Soon, Franco's ranks were depleted, and the Republic was reestablished in Spain, on the basis of Gandhian democratic socialism, combined with syndicalist and cooperativist economics.

It was not long before most of Europe began to adopt Gandhian political methods and institutions. In the US. the struggle began with A. Phillip Randolph, a black union organizer, who had met Gandhi in 1932 in New York. Randolph paralyzed Washington D.C., with the help of former World War I veterans, who called for a new society based on non-violence.

Taoist and Buddhist currents became vehicles for widespread civil resistances in Sri Lanka, Burma and Indochina, until the Chinese employed nonviolent non cooperation against Japanese invaders, during the mid 30's. The failures of the Japanese aggressors in China caused a local revolution, which started in Hokkaido, and spread to the main Japanese island of Honshu. The Muslim Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan ("the frontier Gandhi") of Afghanistan, had succeeded in converting most Muslims to his non-violent interpretation of the Q'uran (by emphasizing the early career of Mohammed, and the notion of the universality of all religions). By the end of the 1940's, Gandhian, Taoist, Buddhist and New Muslim non-violent regimes has sprung up throughout most of Asia.

Thus began the era of non-violent international warfare. Gandhi had advised the formation of non-violent armies to protect against invaders. In 1962, the Chinese and the Russians fought the first full scale non-violent wars, in which civil resistance campaigns of the 30's and 40's were re-enacted on a gargantuan scale. The disputes were partially territorial and partially ideological: the Chinese population was growing, and moving peaceably into parts of Siberia; while the subtle differences between Tolstoyan and Taoist civil resistance techniques were at odds. China and Russia each sought to convert the other. The Sino-Russian non-violent war continued for 45 years, during which time at least 17 people died (most of these were participants in hunger strikes, including Gandhi himself who died in 1971, just after his hundredth birthday). in 1957, the British news programme Panorama broadcast a story about the latest harvest of Swiss spaghetti. Viewers were treated to a rare glimpse of farmhands plucking the long noodles right from the trees. As presenter Richard Dimbleby said, "there's nothing like fresh, home-grown spaghetti." In an ironic twist of fate, that very May, just as demand for spaghetti reached new heights thanks to Panorama, an infestation of spaghetti weevils devastated the Swiss countryside. Though imports from Rome and the United States helped placate the masses, some citizens resorted to growing their own spaghetti right from empty tomato sauce cans. in 1970, President Richard Nixon signs the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act into law. This law, practically written in the boardrooms of the major tobacco companies, all but defangs the Surgeon General and other anti-smoking forces under the aegis of "fairness and balance in public discourse" by requiring that tobacco manufacturers get "equal time" whenever their product is denounced in the media. The law opens the floodgates, with other industries getting in on the act, confusing the public with hundreds of claims and counter-claims by "experts" and "studies" on every side of even the most minor question. American confidence in the major media and advertising hits an all-time low by the time the law is rescinded in 1974. Post By April Fool's Contest Winner LeaperBP

in 1999, the territory of Nunavut secedes from the Dominion of Canada, declaring itself the independent Republic of Nunavut. The decision was announced by the Nunavut National Assembly (NNA), which had been secretly meeting in Iqaluit since late 1997, motivated by Inuit desires for sovereignty. The Speaker of the Assembly, Paul Okalik, declared, "For over a century our people have tried to live in the shadow of the white man. He shows no concern over our affairs and wellbeing, yet exerts his political will over us from afar. We Nunavummiut must now craft our own destiny." However, given the suspicious date on which the announcement was made, people around the world were skeptical at best. No nation or government, even the Canadian parliament in Ottawa, took the declaration seriously... most ignored it altogether. Prime Minister Chretien made no motion acknowledging the NNA's declaration. One Canadian legislator went so far as to quip, "Really, these April Fool's jokes are quite audacious this year." Horribly embarrassed, the NNA quickly dissolved the Republic, permanently disbanded, and Nunavut carried on as a Canadian territory as if nothing ever happened. in 2005, following the death of Arthur Wells, delegates from Moebian churches across the country convene in Hollywood to elect a new leader. At first it appears that Bill Murray—whose hit movie Groundhog Day was inspired by Moebian teachings and who has decided to retire from movie making in order to lead the church—will win easily, but during debates about the proper interpretation of Moebianism, deep and irreconcilable differences among its members are soon revealed. While Murray holds that the true Moebian ethic is to be selfless and loving toward others, David Bowie - who regards Friedrich Nietzsche's doctrine of the eternal return as the proper foundation for Moebianism--proclaims a doctrine of selfishness and self-fulfillment as the true teaching. A third, minority, group—while agreeing with Murray about selflessness--finds the teachings of Moebianism too unbearable to live with. Preaching a doctrine of withdrawal from the world in order to minimize suffering, members of this group finally conclude that the only rational response to Moebianism is suicide—preferably a painless suicide. Soon, however, this group effectively eliminates itself, as members across the country kill themselves. post by April Fools' Contest Winner Richard Reilly
