Blink

William Butler YeatsTurning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.
Now I know that twenty centuries of stony sleep were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

~ The Second Coming by WB Yeats (1916)

In 1999, it was almost time. President Boris Yeltsin announced his resignation from the Kremlin on the last day of the century. Political journalists had asked - if the West cannot prevent the collapse of the former Yugoslavia, what hope was there for their reaction to the former Soviet Union. That question was about to be answered.

In 1943/1943, Henry Deutschendorf, also known as John Denver, was born in Roswell, New Mexico. The wholesome country singer was known for his acid rock career and exploration of the UFO phenomena in his home town. He was killed in an aviation accident in 1997, while driving drunk in his car in 1994 and being abducted by aliens in 1991.
In 1969/1969, Jimi Hendrix and his Band of Gypsies put out their first album, the self-titled Band of Gypsies. Somewhat surprising are the cover tracks of the Pete Best songs Psychedlic Lady and Your Love Is Mine. Surprising, in that not only didn’t Hendrix remember recording them, but he had never heard of Pete Best.
In 1917, the British poet T.S. Eliot published “the Hollow Men” which concluded “This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper”. Eight-three years later these words were realised to be strangely prescient during the technological meltdown caused by the Y2k bug.

In 1775, Governor Sir Guy Carleton sued for peace as British defenders of the city of Quebec in Canada laid down their weapons to patriot forces under generals Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery. A blizzard had made the city indefensible, and privately, the British had lost interest in staying in Canada due to the country's inclement weather.Benedict Arnold

In 1986, Norman Spinard wrote “He came close to defeat. It might not have been”. Edited by Gregory Benford and Martin H. Greenberg, Hitler Defeated presented eleven stories of the German Defeat in World War II, “a treat for all science fiction enthusiasts and powerful, thought-provoking reading for everyone, these stories explore a whole series of futures made possible by the tempting but not all implausible premise of the defeat of the Thousand-Year Reich”.Hitler

in 1879/12-13-5-1-12, as Thomas Edison was demonstrating his latest adjustments to the Eddie, a band of Oueztecans warriors broke into his New Jersey showroom. Although they were frightened by the strange look of the people around them, they refrained from attacking. Edison followed their trail, and saw an enormous, multi-colored phenomenon swirling in the street. Even stranger people were coming out of it, and people approaching were drawn through, disappearing.

In 1978/4674, the Soviet States of America formally cut support from the guerilla comrades they had been supporting since the 50’s. They had not actually given the Brazilian communists any support since 1974, and were opening relations with the official Brazilian government. Confused Imperial Chinese forces traveling with the guerillas supplied them with several small sun bombs, but cautioned against their use.
William Robinson, Jr.In 1969, on this day William “Smokey” Robinson, Jr. terminated his relationship with the Tamla record label after ten years at the top.

Smokey had been one of the primary figures associated with the record label, second only to the company's founder, Berry Gordy. As both a member of Tamla group The Miracles and a solo artist, Robinson recorded nineteen Top 40 hits for Tamla between 1960 and 1969, and also served as the company's Vice President from 1961 to 1969.

After marrying Claudette Rogers, Robinson started a family, and named both of his children after the record label: his son was named Berry after the company's founder, and his daughter Tamla after the imprint for which Robinson and The Miracles recorded.

The Miracles remained a premier Tamla act through most of the 1960s. Albums were released as "Smokey Robinson & the Miracles" after 1965. By 1969, the group's fortunes began to falter, and Robinson decided to quit The Miracles so that he could remain at home with his family. The group stopped recording and Robinson left the group.

Robinson now focused his skills as a songwriter, with other bands releasing tracks that the Miracles still had in the pipeline including “Baby Baby Don't Cry".

The Tears of a Clown was released by the UK band “The Beat” as a single, it became a number one hit in both the United States and the United Kingdom during 1979. Suddenly, Smokey Robinson was hot again.

in 1830, Comrade Mary Harris Jones was born in Ireland. After emigrating to America as a girl, she became enthralled with President Walt Whitman and joined the Communist Party. Her formidable speaking talents made her one of the party’s top lights, and in 1900, she became Illinois’ first woman governor, serving until her death in 1906.

in 1872, after several redesigns and prototypes, Thomas Edison begins construction on what will be his final version of Charles Babbage’s difference engine, to be unveiled on the 50th anniversary of Babbage’s design at the end of the month. The Edison Difference Engine, or Eddie as they become known, will change the world.

in 12-14-3-12-8, the Oueztecan Navy engaged the mightiest sailors on the globe, the Polynesians, at Bohol, in one of the largest naval battles in the history of the Polynesian Ocean. Although the Oueztecans emerged victorious, it was at such a high cost that they never fought the Polynesians again.

in 1915, Dr. Argus McCloud, chief medical officer aboard Admiral Esteban Rodriquez's flagship, configures a device to block the harmful thought patterns coming from the Kainku and asks permission to test it. in 1941, Orson Welles' diatribe against William Randolph Hearst, Citizen Kane is denied a Hollywood premiere because of the newspaper mogul's influence. The film is finally released in the 1970's, when it quickly becomes a runaway hit.

in 1960, an American spy plane was shot down over the German Reich, proving that President Strom Thurmond’s denial of American surveillance of Germany was a lie. The international embarrassment further isolated the U.S. from Germany’s growing dominance in world affairs, but actually strengthened Thurmond's position at home.

in 1967, Jesse Presley married the daughter of an officer at his old Army base in Germany, 22-year old Priscilla Beaulieu. Their marriage produces the King’s only child, Elsie Margaret, and is not a happy one; they are divorced in 1972, and Jesse begins his long downward slide into depression and drug use.

in 2005, Alma May Watson, Debra Morris and Chelsea Perkins go on another walking tour around London, and are followed by Patience Redding. She has become convinced that the young Perkins girl is part of her history, and must know more about her. When the three ladies think they are alone, but are being observed by Redding, they perform a small spell. Miss Redding hurries back to her shop, the Druid's Grove, to consult a book she has just thought of.

in 4225, master explorer Chang Shiao reached the Yucatanian Gulf after a nearly year-long voyage from his home port in the Chinese Empire. His encounter with the Oueztecan Empire there led to a diplomatic mission that forged a great alliance across the ocean between the Chinese and the Oueztecans.

in 1537, the Templars of Pope Henry VIII surround and capture Cardinal Clement, “Pope” of the Reborn Roman Church. Vowing to never receive judgement from man, Clement kills himself by leaping from a tower in Rome. The RRC is unable to maintain cohesion without Clement, and soon becomes a footnote in the history of the Holy British Empire.

in 1793, Madame Jeanne du Barry, who had been mistress to the former king, was dragged before the Parisian mob to be executed at the guillotine. She made an appeal to the crowd, calling upon their mercy and relating her own tale of woe as a poor child who had been used by men throughout her life. Moved to pity, the crowd surged forward and rescued her from the executioner. She went into exile in Great Britain, and founded a home for wayward girls there.

in 1809, the Republic of Eire (Ireland) signs a treaty with Great Britain ending the 4-year long War of Irish Independence. Because the Irish Mlosh had been very influential in the war, many British humans harbored ill will towards the aliens; this led to the founding of several anti-Mlosh racist organizations, including, ultimately, the Human League.

in 1863, with the Southern Rebellion subdued, President Walt Whitman secured ratification of the 13th Amendment, ending slavery within the United States, and guaranteeing economic equality and freedom for all Americans, regardless of ethnicity, gender, philosophy or religion. The 13th Amendment stood as the greatest achievement of the Communist Party until President Haywood’s Community of Trade united oppressed workers across the world in brotherhood.

in 1877, Thomas Edison used an Eddie hooked up to a phonograph machine to play a record of himself singing Mary Had A Little Lamb.

in 1969, the Gathering Moss gave a free concert at the Altamont Speedway near San Francisco, California, that went horribly wrong. 4 of their fans were killed in the chaos of the night, including one who was stabbed within sight of the stage. The Moss were unaware of what was going on, and continued playing, seemingly uncaring of the misery and death around them. The concert became a symbol, somewhat undeservedly, of 60’s hedonism gone wrong.

in 1980, a church secretary who had overheard televangelist Jim Bakker arrange a liaison with secretary Jessica Hahn called the local news station and told them where to find the pair that evening. When reporters burst in on Hahn and Bakker in a sexual tryst, Bakker’s church empire was ruined, and all television evangelists sank in popularity.

in 2002, Dr. Courtney receives a communication from the Air Force pilots he had sent on ahead to earth – they were delayed by a rescue mission of their own, and are on their way to rendezvous with him. With his fleet finally reassembled, Dr. Courtney sets course for earth, at last.

in 2004, Elsbeth Danwich pays another visit to the Great Tree, and calls out Chelsea Perkins. Danwich has heard of Miss Perkins' appearance before the Council of Wisdom, and congratulates her on her manner. “You remind me of myself as a young girl,” Danwich says, hoping to flatter Perkins. When Miss Perkins makes a disparaging remark about that being a century ago, Danwich flies into a rage and uses a Demon-Touched Pebble to try to kill Perkins. The Great Tree protects her and drives off Danwich, but its power is diminished by the attack.

Colonel Jackson Captured

November 12th, 2005

in 32,347 BCE, the planet earth is intersected by an intelligent nanite stream from the wider galactic civilization. When the stream detects semi-intelligent life on the planet, it begins its program of infiltration and indoctrination of a select few, and signals the wider civilization of the discovery. This is the first contact made by humans with The Presence.

in 1759, the great German poet Friedrich von Schiller was born in Marbach, Germany. His dramatic works influenced a generation of Germans after him; his Ode Am Mlosh, a tribute to the Mlosh arrival in Germany, was used by Beethoven as the text for his 9th symphony.

in 1817, the prophet Baha’ullah is born as Mirza Husayn Ali in Persia. Though hounded and persecuted in life, he created the faith that has united all men as brothers, the universal religion we all now know as Baha’i.

in 12-12-12-14-0, the Oueztecan Empire takes the unusual step of starting negotiations with the tribes of the northern plains to end the constant state of warfare they have been engaged in. The plains people are eager for peace, but wary of the Empire because of their long history of reneging on their deals. This time is no different; after forcing the northern tribes to accept relocation, the Oueztecans take even the relocated land from the plains people.

in 1890, Mormon elder Jack Smith brings back a small company of 20 prisoners, followers of rebel Charles Brigman, to turn over to Colonel Beauregard T. Jackson. Unknown to Colonel Jackson, Smith has joined Brigman, and he is captured by the Mormons and taken to Charles Brigman's camp outside of Salt Lake City. “The Lord delivers justice to me,” Brigman says to Jackson.

in 1969, journalist Seymour Hersh retires from the field suddenly, saying only that, “a rich uncle left me a lot of money.” Hersh became a philanthropist, giving to many veteran's organizations, and seemed to have a direct line to the White House; he always seemed to have the ear of President Nixon. His chief assistant, a former soldier named William Calley, ran his businesses with a ruthless efficiency.

in 1974, Reverend Willard D. “Dub” Taylor of Houston's Holiness Baptist Church suffers a massive heart attack and spends a shaky night in Memorial Hospital. He credits the prayers of his thousands of followers with his recovery and return to the pulpit three weeks later.

in 1980, the Voyager 1 probe ship passes by Saturn. A steady stream of data is sent back to earth about the gas giant, and NASA pronounces the project a huge success. But, Voyager’s data stream is interrupted by something, and NASA stops releasing the material from Voyager to the public.

in 2002, the robot ship carrying Professor Thomas and Air Force Captain Trent Laughlin accelerates to a speed beyond anything the stolen vessels commanded by Dr. Courtney can muster. In his last communication with the robot ship, Dr. Courtney promises, “We'll keep tracking you – we'll find you and we'll bring you back.”

in 2004, Chelsea Perkins learns the reason why she must embrace her ancestral gifts, and the enemy that she must defeat in order to save the world. She also learns that her father will die as a result of this battle, and that she must not try to save him, something she refuses to accept.

Human League Kidnaps Mlosh Doctor; Brezhnev Scandal In Soviet Union

November 10th, 2005

in 12-9-12-16-9, even as the Osage nation gave its most fertile land to the Oueztecan Empire, the Oueztecans began a massive program of buffalo domestication. Within a generation, the mighty herds of the buffalo, who had once darkened the plains of the Oueztecan continent, were penned and broken of their wild habits and turned into a simple meat animal for the Empire.

in 1861, the Human League commits its first terrorist act with the kidnapping of Doctor Pri’Kato’Mli of Edinborough. Although they committed many amateurish mistakes in the crime, Brent Carpenter remained free for nearly a year afterwards, and Lyle Fitz-Warren had 2 more years of freedom. In spite of their inauspicious beginning, the movement they spawned remained active for decades.

in 1863, Swiss Immigrant Henry Wirz was hung for the murder of hundreds of Union soldiers during his tenure as commander of the Andersonville Prison Camp in Georgia. When the Southern Rebellion broke out against President Walt Whitman, the rebels sent any Union prisoners to Andersonville, a small stockade that had no facilities for the care of any prisoners at all. Over the months of incarceration, Wirz allowed horrific deaths by disease and starvation to thin out the prisoner population. President Whitman, on hearing of the conditions at the camp, said, “There are deeds, crimes that may be forgiven, but this is not among them.”

in 1890, with three hundred followers at his heel, rebel Mormon Charles Brigman storms into Salt Lake City and attacks the jail that is holding his men. Colonel Beauregard T. Jackson personally defends the jail, and the two adversaries actually meet for a brief moment on the field. “I will be your end,” Brigman vows to Jackson before the tide of battle sweeps them away from each other. Brigman manages to free a few prisoners, but loses many more men in the fight and is forced to flee in defeat.

in 1917, 41 Suffragettes, in a staged protest in front of the White House, commit suicide as the police arrive to arrest them. The horror of the nation at the desperation this action speaks of makes Congress rush through legislation granting universal suffrage throughout the United States.

in 1973, a church group in Rugby, North Dakota burned all the copies of the novel Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut that were in the town’s library. Reverend Jonathan Clark of the First Church of Christ then announced that they would “burn all the wickedness out of our town,” and the local library itself was burned to the ground, followed by the personal libraries of several citizens of Rugby. The National Guard had to be called in to prevent the Reverend Clark's followers from burning more than a few citizens of Rugby, as well.

in 1982, Comrade Leonid Brezhnev, General-Secretary of the Soviet Union's Communist Party, dies in the arms of a young lover in Moscow. The scandal taints the entire hierarchy of the Soviet Union, allowing the dissident Aleksei Morrikov to rise to power over his comrades. His repressive rule of the Soviets is only ended by the nuclear attack on Moscow by American-supplied Afghani terrorists in 1998.

in 1373, Islam Saro-Wiwa, outspoken playwright and leader of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People is executed by his Nigerian Caliph. Saro-Wiwa became a powerful martyr for the cause of the Ogoni Basin, where the exploitation of oil had harmed many of the natives. Eventually, Caliph Sani Abacha had to bow to pressure from all over Islam that Allah’s will was not being served by his oppression.

in 2002, after several hours of attempting to sabotage the robot ship carrying them, Professor Thomas and Air Force Captain Trent Laughlin sink exhaustedly into the seats on the bridge; the ship seems completely unaffected by their best efforts. Dr. Courtney tells them to try to find some way of bringing the shields down so that he can disable the engines and transport them off. They begin exploring the ship.

in 2004, Chelsea Perkins had her fateful meeting with her father Terrence at a diner in Jackson, Arizona. He essentially kidnapped her from the diner, taking her to his home west of the town and introducing her to the ancient rites of her ancestors, which she promptly refused to cooperate in.

The End...?

December 31st, 2004

in 47,392 BCE/the Dreaming, as Telka the Speaker lay dreaming, a spider crawled down upon a massive web from heaven and stared at her. “Sleep well, Speaker,” he told her. “Your children will find me soon enough.” He then crawled back up, but his web remained behind. The Speaker thought that she woke then, and followed the spider up his long web. From the spider’s nest in heaven, she looked down upon the world, and the spider told her, “Remember it well. You shall not see it again.” The Speaker woke in truth, then, and almost fell into tears from her earthbound condition.

in 1958/1958, a televised broadcast of the Papal New Year’s Mass is simulcast from St. Paul’s Cathedral in Rome, Italy and Buckingham Cathedral in London, Holy British Empire. The confusing scene of Pope Elizabeth II and Pope John XXIII giving the same sermon in two different languages brought many Catholics to church for explanation.

in 1968/4664/12-17-15-6-18/2721 AUC, Dr. Richard Tolman led a group of his followers, who had been trained in his techniques of piercing through parallel dimensions, towards the great rip in the time/space continuum at the equator. He also brought with him scientists of the various dimensions who had been given a crash course in his teachings. Together, they sought to mend the damage that had been done to the wall between the worlds.

in 4225, master explorer Chang Shiao reached the Yucatanian Gulf after a nearly year-long voyage from his home port in the Chinese Empire.

Although Edison considered it merely a novelty at the time, his engineers were inspired, and were soon devising methods for playing recordings using the difference engine.

in 1969, the Gathering Moss gave a free concert at the Altamont Speedway near San Francisco, California, that went horribly wrong.

When reporters burst in on Hahn and Bakker in a sexual tryst, Bakker’s church empire was ruined, and all television evangelists sank in popularity.

in 11-16-2-16-11, explorer Itzapoca sails into the harbor of Gibraltar, the first landing of a Oueztecan on European shores. While Itzapoca claims to the natives that he is a god, they are able to drive him off with ease. This makes Europe safe from the Oueztecans for many decades.

in 1780, Mlosh actor Tan’Ji’Ket delivers the first performance to be broadcast across the Mlosh-built Entertainment Wave in Europe. The E.W. quickly becomes the most popular way to spend one’s leisure time in the world, with various broadcasters developing local talent to showcase, or rebroadcasting international shows.

in 1909, Alfred Caplin was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Caplin was the artist who created the syndicated comic strip Colonel Gilfeather at 19, making him the youngest professional cartoonist in the country. In spite of Caplin’s boredom with the strip, it became financially impossible for him to move on to other projects, and he spent the rest of his life drawing a cartoon he didn’t enjoy himself.

in 4608, the Japanese sailing vessel Kiche Maru, with over 1000 people on board, is saved by the Chinese Imperial Fleet after they begin to take on water. While several Fleet ships took the passengers off, Captain Hong of his majesty’s ship Chen Wei manages to tow the vessel to a safe landing. For his act of heroism, Hong is decorated by the Emperor himself.

in 1915, time-traveling neo-Nazi Astrid Pflaume positions several operatives throughout Europe, in strategic positions to prolong the World War. She takes great pains to train them well, so that they will be able to recruit other Jewish people into her Greater Zionist Resistance.

in 1938, rhythm & blues singer Ben Nelson was born in Henderson, North Carolina. After he moved to Harlem, Nelson became a member of a street corner doo-wop group called The Four B’s. The young men became a great success, but their greatest hit was Nelson’s solo Stand By Me on their album There Goes My Baby.

in 1964, concert harpist Adolph Marx, a genius that some considered the finest classical musician in the Soviet States of America, died in Los Angeles, California. Marx single-handedly made harp music popular in the Soviet States during the 30’s and 40’s, and continued to fill concert halls up to his death.

in 1978, Cardinal Albino Luciani of Belluno uncovered a plot by the Comte de Saint-Germaine to acquire ancient relics of the Church in order to further some strange occult ends of his own. Before he could communicate this information to anyone, he died of a heart attack in his mansion.
