“There's a lot of fighting going on right now,” Mike said, looking at the map. He pointed at the areas closest to them. “According to the resistance bloggers, President-elect Kerry and his troops are pushing through over here at Kermit.”
“Shouldn't we head there, then?” Steph was looking over his shoulder anxiously. “I mean, they're the guys we want to get this stuff to, right?”
“Yeah, but do we really want to head into the middle of the fight?” Mike certainly looked as if he didn't want to. “If we could bypass them and join up with the resistance that's bringing up the rear, we wouldn't have to dodge bullets; or get forced to fight the guys we're supposed to be helping by our good Texas neighbors, here.”
“I'm just thinkin' that we need to get to the other side as quick as possible. Especially if they're gonna be looking for 'able-bodied' recruits.” She looked at one of the windows he had open on his computer and read a few lines from a hysterical writer. “This guy says that Kerry and his troops are shielding refugees from the Texas Guard. If we just get behind the lines, we can ask them to help us.”
“That means we have to get through the lines. You know, fighting, gunfire, that kinda bad stuff?”
She studied the map for a minute. “Maybe we can just go off-road before we get there. We leave the highway here,” she said, pointing to a section of the road a couple of dozen miles from Kermit, “in front of the fighting, scoot cross-country till we get behind the good guys, then circle around and head into Kermit. It's all desert out here, shouldn't be that hard to get across.”
“Yeah, people die in the desert, you know?”
“We'll bring water.”
“Man.” Mike whined. “I wish I'd gone with Eli, now.”

Janice fumbled through the dead guard's clothes for a set of keys while Jake made sure no one else was in the basement. He asked the president, “Do you know how many of them were watching you?”
“I've only seen about three of 'em the last few hours,” the president said. “For some reason, most of them left earlier.”
“They've got a body double of you,” Janice told him, picking the keys off of the body. She walked over to Bush and unlocked his cuffs. “They're trying to install him into the White House. I don't know what good that would do them, since Kerry was supposed to take office next month, anyway.”
“Well,” Bush said, sheepishly. “We kind of have a provision that suspends the results of the election in case of martial law.”
Jake and Janice both looked at him. Janice recovered her voice first. “I want you to say that into my recorder here, so that the next time somebody calls me a crazy conspiracy nut, I can make them listen to you admitting that.”
“We were just going to use it in case of a terrorist attack, miss.”
“And, nobody would ever think of misusing a provision like that!”
Jake shoved himself between them. “You know, this is all fascinating, but we need to get the hell outta here.” He walked over to the stairs. “Janice, I'll take point, you come up behind the president. Mr. President, in case there's still somebody up there who doesn't want you leaving, you stick close to us. We'll get you out of here.”
“I love it when you take charge,” Janice whispered to Jake, smirking.

Eli and Kevin were making as much noise as a herd of cattle, but Janice was surprisingly quiet. Jake was grateful for that, at least. He was tempted to split the two other men off and have them provide a distraction while he and Janice snuck into the ranch house. Instead, he kept them all together, and when they were spotted by one of the guards, he shot first.
The lucky shot took the man down, clutching at his throat. Jake motioned them all forward, saying, “They had to have heard that. Let's move, people.”
True enough, the loud crack brought the other guard looking for his friend. Eli shot him three times, even though the first hit was enough to take him down. “Save those bullets,” Jake hissed at him. He ran up to the nearest window and shot it. The bullet made a dent, but didn't crack the glass. “Bullet-proof. Great.” He ran to the front door, followed by his three comrades, and shot the lock twice. He and Eli barreled into it, bursting it open, and were immediately shot at by two armed men inside.
Eli's left arm spurted blood, and he cried out in pain. Janice's gun banged once, and one of the guards fell. Jake and Kevin shot at the other man, and he also fell. Kevin pulled off one of the men's ties and used it as a tourniquet to stop Eli's bleeding. “Go,” he yelled at Jake and Janice, and they took off into the house, opening doors and ducking in long enough to make sure that there was no one there.
“This place is deserted,” Janice said. “What if they've already taken him away?”
“Then, we're screwed.” Jake broke open a door that hid a set of stairs, and ducked backward as a gunshot cracked in front of him. He fired back and dodged to the side of the door.
Janice dropped to the floor and crawled over to the opening. She bobbed her head in front of the stairwell to get a quick look at what was at the bottom and saw a single man looking up. She pulled her head back and said to Jake, “You go high, I'll go low,” then reached her gun around to fire at the man from the floor. Jake fired from his standing position.
One of them hit, because the man fell. Jake yelled out, “Anybody still down there, give up now. This thing is done.”
A very familiar voice said, “I'll be happy to, soon's you undo my handcuffs.”

in 1937, newly-reelected President Franklin Roosevelt begins his push to expand the Supreme Court to 15 members in order to create a liberal majority on the High Court. In spite of spirited Republican opposition, Roosevelt's immense popularity carries the day, and 6 new Justices are sworn in the following spring. With their help, the New Deal takes its place as entrenched law in short order. Unfortunately for the liberal movement, conservatives take over the court in the 1950's and 60's, and America's support structure is dismantled in the 1980's. The importance of this structure is made clear to the nation when the stock market crashes in 1987 and savings & loans across the country collapse due to corruption brought about by deregulation. The crisis ushers in a new liberal era with the election of President Jesse Jackson in 1988, who turns America around with a radical restructuring of the nation's resources. Although the wealthy wail about having to return to tax rates mirroring those of the 1950's, the country as a whole is strengthened by his policies and supports him for his landslide reelection in 1992.

in 1988, a federal court in Florida hands down a pair of indictments for Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega on drug trafficking charges. After Noriega makes a call to Langley, Virginia, the indictments are quietly squashed. President Reagan, who had been considering sending troops down to Panama to capture the dictator, is warned off of the action by Vice-President Bush, a former CIA director.

in 2007, after President Bush killed almost a dozen members of the White House Press Corps and 2 Secret Service agents while joyriding a tractor, impeachment papers were drawn up in the House, with reluctant bipartisan support. The White House immediately denounced the effort, saying that the charge of manslaughter did not rise to “High Crimes and Misdemeanors” as required by the Constitution. Representatives argued back that the charge had been reduced to manslaughter only because of White House pressure on the local District Attorney – video of the event clearly showed the president laughing maniacally as he ran down the reporters.

Tybee Bomb	In 1958 the Tybee Hydrogen Bomb is lost by the US Air Force off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. By a perverse twist of fate, it would detonate at the height of the Cuban Missiles Crisis, spooking the trigger-happy Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Curtis 'Bombs Away' LeMay into believing ..
.. that America was under attack. The cool head of President Joseph P Kennedy was required to question why Georgia should be the chosen target for a Cuban nuclear launch. A serial womaniser and prohibition profiteer, Joe was an old hand at self-preservation by avoiding unnecessary fights.

In 1941, Loose Cannon Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence held the keys to North Africa. Of course, it might have been a very different campaign but for the support of his Arab allies. Had the British succumbed to Zionist pressure in 1917 and issued the Balfour Declaration, Lawrence believed the Afrika Korps would right now be pushing the British Eighth Army back into Cairo. Churchill's 1922 White Paper had again denied that a state of Israel was the intention of the British Government and that was just as well for the North Africa Campaign. Actually, Lawrence was in favour of a state but along different lines. He dreamt of unifying the races in Palestine, under the technical leadership of what he was awed enough to call the eternal miracle of Jewry. Yet he had no time for Zionism. None at all.

With American/British/Commonwealth forces locked in Japan, Russians overrun Europe before a recalled Winston Churchill saves the day..

Assassinations

Alternate Historian's Note: November is NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. In 2004, we produced our novel Warp, and last year we got a start on The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion during this annual event. Both of these novels were based on timelines from TIAH – Warp was based on the Mlosh timeline, and Protocols on the Greater Zionist Resistance timeline. Although we posted numerous links to these novels on Lulu, TIAH didn't post any excerpts from them. We're going to do it a little differently this year. This year, the November posts on TIAH will be excerpts from the novel that is being written by us for NaNoWriMo. We will still have Guest Historian entries – Stephen Payne (who has compiled several and made them available on Lulu for free – just go through the Add to Cart system to get it) has some already written and waiting, and he is going to be joined by Guest Historian JD – so, if you want to make a Guest Post this month, go ahead and send it to us, and it will appear along with our novel post.

in 1946, former British Prime Minister Winston Spencer Churchill opens his daily post in his suite at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York City. The headline of the German newspaper Die Zeitung reads 'Fugitives from Justice' above a picture of the great lion himself, Deputy Prime Minister Clement Attlee and King George VI, leader of Free French Forces Charles de Gaulle and Yugoslav partisan Josep Broz Tito. A smaller article below reports that US President Charles Lindbergh is close to signing extradition papers which would hand Churchill over to the Nazis. He had anticipated this; with his suitcases at the door, he will check out today and head north by train to Canada to join the Royal Family and British Government in Exile. De Gaulle is close by in Quebec, but they will not be rushing to see each other any time soon. Bad relations started from the Battle of France and were destroyed by the scuttling of the French Fleet at Mers-el-Kebir. Field Marshall Montgomery had publicly called the Phoney War preparations a “disaster” and spent his entire time in France rehearsing, and then executing a masterful retreat to Dunkirk. Then Churchill had sunk the French Fleet before it fell into German hands. De Gaulle judged these betrayals to be the usual treacheries from “perfidious albion”. in 1962, in Minsk, the Soviet citizen Alek James Hidell, (formerly known as US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald), is arrested by the KGB for the assassination of Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev. Released thirty years later following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Hidell reveals all on world-wide television during the US presidential campaign of 1992. Khruschev was eliminated by CIA agents as a precursor to the US invasion of Cuba later that same year which a weakened politburo was unable to resist effectively, with Hidell chosen as a convenient patsy. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1963, Lyndon Baines Johnson is assassinated in Dallas, Texas by lone gunman Ilich Ramírez Sánchez - popularly known as "Carlos the Jackal". The diaries of wife Lady Bird Johnson, published after her death in 2010 reveal that the episode was stage managed by Texan sympathisers to enable Johnson to escape into obscurity from the many scandals enveloping his Vice Presidency. The ringing of the phone startled all three of them. Steph hurried over to the one in the kitchen and picked it up. “Hello?”
“Steph? Baby, are you all right?”
“Dad, we're OK,” she said, sitting down again. The kids had wandered into the kitchen and looked at her expectantly. “It's your Grandpa Hughes.” They both relaxed, and George climbed into her lap.
“I wanna talk to him.”
“Just a minute, honey. Dad, how'd you get through?”
“I been callin' since 7 this mornin'. Dang phone finally actin' right. Don't understand why I couldn't call you, it's not like you're in Waco, you're in dang Pflugerville, I should be able to call you. I woulda driven over there, but soldiers are all over the dang place, tellin' us to stay put, not go anywhere. It's like I was in the Army again.”
Steph smiled as her father went through this tirade. Just hearing him complain made her feel better. “Is mom all right?”
“She's fine, she's fine. You know her, end of the world, just like she always said. She 'spects her butt's gonna get raptured any second now.” Steph heard the muffled sound of him turning his head away from the phone and shouting at his wife, “Cain't leave me that easy, woman!” He turned back to the phone and said, “How are the kids?”
“They're OK, just a little shook up. And there was something this morning...” She locked eyes with Joan and stroked her cheek. “But, we can talk about that later. I'm still a little worried I haven't heard from Jake, yet.”
“That worthless boy ain't comin' back to you, Steph,” her father said. “Jeff Howard was askin' about you just the other day, you know. Y'all could come back to Tyler, kids could go to a decent school, you could get with a good man...”
“Dad, I'm not ready to date, yet.” The kids both smiled at her. This was a conversation they had heard many times between Grandpa Hughes and their mother. “But, thanks for the offer.”
“All right, then.” He decided to let it drop. “Look, once they open the roads again, maybe you and the kids should come on up here. I don't like it that you're that close to Austin.”
“I know, but I think Pflugerville's far enough away that... that we don't have to worry about what might happen if there's another attack.” She didn't want to say what kind of attack in front of George; Joan's worried look was bad enough. “I imagine once they open the roads again, traffic's gonna be pretty bad, and I don't wanna fight that. We'll be fine.”
“OK, baby.” He was disappointed, but he let it go. “I love you,” he said, quietly, fervently.
That almost made her start crying; her father never said that. “I love you, too, dad.”

Charles de Gaulle, 2nd Napoleon; Elvis Joins The FBI

in 1614, Tommasso Caccini, a priest of Florence, spoke with Galileo Galilee for several hours to discuss the scientist’s theory that the earth circled the sun, and not the other way around. After this meeting, Caccini left the priesthood and devoted his life to spreading the word of science. He was executed for heresy in 1616.

Sir Freddie Laker	In 1982, last minute invention from the UK Government stopped pioneering budget airliner Laker Airways collapsing with debts of GBP 270 million to banks and other creditors. The government had taken a keen interest in the fortunes of Laker - Mrs Thatcher was a personal admirer of Sir Freddie - and following a four hour meeting at Gatwick, the Department of Trade confirmed there would after all be state assistance. Sir Freddie Laker had invested an extra GBP 60m in an attempt to rescue the airline. Insolvency would have been a major embarrassment for the Civil Aviation Authority.

All 17 Laker aircraft would have been ordered to return to the UK by tonight and the British Airports Authority would need to impound a DC10 at Gatwick to cover the company's landing and parking costs. Stranded passengers - numbering 6,000 - would have the return half of their tickets honoured by British Airways, Pan American Airways, Air Florida and British Caledonian. The receiver Bill Mackey, partner of Ernst and Whinney, told the media: 'There was no way that Sir Freddie Laker can carry on with this business in its present form.
