Not Long...

The state of TIAH

November 17th, 2006

Alternate Historian's Note: November is NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. In 2004, we produced our novel Warp, and last year we got a start on The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion during this annual event. Both of these novels were based on timelines from TIAH – Warp was based on the Mlosh timeline, and Protocols on the Greater Zionist Resistance timeline. Although we posted numerous links to these novels on Lulu, TIAH didn't post any excerpts from them. We're going to do it a little differently this year. This year, the November posts on TIAH will be excerpts from the novel that is being written by us for NaNoWriMo. We will still have Guest Historian entries – Stephen Payne (who has compiled several and made them available on Lulu for free – just go through the Add to Cart system to get it) has some already written and waiting – so, if you want to make a Guest Post this month, go ahead and send it to us, and it will appear along with our novel post.

in 1872 on board the Mary Celeste and suspended in raw alcohol inside barrel #1701, Azâzêl begins to awaken from his long dreaming. It won’t be long now. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1968, John Forbes Kerry reported for duty at Coastal Squadron 1 in Cam Ranh Bay in South Vietnam, where he served as an officer in charge of Swift boats, leading five-man crews on a number of patrols into enemy-controlled areas. Of strategic significance throughout history, both the French and the United States used the military facilities in the bay during the Indochina Wars. Indeed Admiral Rozhdestvensk used the bay as a staging area for the Imperial Russian fleet prior to the Battle of Tsushima in 1905. Ironically, the Vietnamese turned the military facilities in Cam Ranh Bay over to the Soviet Union after the fall of Saigon. In 1979, the Soviet government signed an agreement with Vietnam for a 25-year lease of the base. Cam Ranh Bay was the largest Soviet naval base outside the Soviet Union, allowing the Soviet Union to project increased power in the South China Sea. In his inaugural address, Kerry gave Cam Ranh Bay as an example of the moral bankruptcy of the Domino Theory, a 20th Century foreign policy theory that speculated if one land in a region came under the influence of Communists, then more would follow. More importantly, he said, America could "do better" in the 21st century, as the defeated nation sought to climb out of the ashes of defeat in the Cold War. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1990, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and US President George Bush share a telephone conference call to review the Kuwait Crisis. Although history records that Thatcher told Bush it was “no time to go wobbly” it was in fact a miserable exchange of views on their mutually low job approval ratings with the electorate. Inflationary pressures caused by mismanagement was threatening the right-wing control of transatlantic government which had held together since 1980. Agreement was reached that it was an appropriate time to switch the public's attention elsewhere – this time, to a new post Cold War hate figure – Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majidida al-Tikrit. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

The well-paved road was a welcome sight for Janice after so long on the crappy little country roads she had been on. The Guard trucks gathered along it were less so.
They waved her to pull over and she rolled down her window. “Howdy, officers,” she said chirpily. “Can you tell me how to get to Dime Box?”
The young corporal who had waved her over looked a little puzzled. “That's like a hundred miles away, ma'am.”
“Man, I'm lost,” she said, pulling out a map of Texas. “Where am I?”
“You're about 10 miles from Waco,” he said, looking at the map with her. He pointed at a spot just outside the city. “See, you're just about here. This whole area is under quarantine,” he said, indicating a wide area around Waco and neighboring Crawford, “so, you'll need to avoid them, OK?”
“I sure will,” she said, nodding enthusiastically. “I don't need any radiation poisoning!”
“Yeah,” the young man said, looking over his shoulder in the direction of Waco. “Wind's blowin' away from us toward Crawford, they said, so we're OK for now.” He looked back at her and leaned in a little closer. “Thing is, the wind can change in a minute. Wish I had me a suit like those guys that're going into the city.”
“Whoa,” Janice said, feigning shock. “They're sendin' people into the city? That's just crazy!”
“S'posed to be things they gotta get out, from Baylor and some other places,” the corporal said. “Anyway, they get the big ol' hazmat suits, and I'm just sittin' here in my uniform. We got the Geiger counter an' all, but what am I s'posed to do if it starts spikin' up?” He shook his head. “Friggin' Army.”
“Farrel!” A man who was obviously the corporal's superior shouted at him. “Get that car on its way and stop jabbering!”
“Yes, sir!” The corporal straightened up and pointed down the road. “You need to get on out of here, ma'am.”
“Oh, yes, sir, Mr. Farrel, I'm turning around right now.” She smiled and waved at him and wheeled her car around to the crappy dirt road again. Once she was out of sight of the Guardsmen, she slapped her steering wheel. At least this checkpoint had given her a little more information. She flipped on her recorder again. “On my third try into Waco, I've managed to glean some information from the men blocking the way. There are people going into Waco, and probably Crawford beyond that, making at least the show of wearing hazmat protection suits. While I'm still going to make a stab for Crawford, if I'm forced to abandon that, I will try to get into Waco and see what these men are 'risking' their lives to get.” She turned off the recorder and looked at her gas gauge. She was running dangerously close to empty.
She went further along her detour than she had intended in order to stop at a little gas station she had seen a few miles away. Once she got there, she walked into the deserted store and up to the older man behind the register. He gave her kind of a half-smile, then turned back to the television behind the counter. The Emergency Broadcasting System was showing maps of central Texas and areas that were deemed off-limits to the public – for their own good, of course – and telling everyone to remain calm.
Janice got a sandwich from the cold case next to the counter and slapped it on the counter, startling the proprietor. “Sorry, ma'am,” he said, ringing her up. “Just a little jumpy, I guess.”
She laughed and smirked. “Who isn't?” She pointed at her car next to the gas pump. “I'm gonna need about 30 bucks in gas, too.” He rang that in and turned the pump on with a little console. Something occurred to her at that point. “So, I guess y'all must have heard the explosion.”
He shook his head. “Nope. I was home in bed; my wife always said I'd sleep through the end of the world.” That thought was a little dark for him, so he cast it out of his mind.
“Was anybody here?”
“No, we don't open till 6.”
She looked around at all the lights still on. “I always thought that the pulse thingy from a nuke was supposed to scramble electronic equipment.”
He looked around with her. “Guess we're far enough away.”
She flashed him her teeth. “Good thing. You have a good day, sir.”
“You too, miss.”
She pumped her gas and then got back on the road. The cover story was looking more porous with every passing hour.

in 1872, 2-year-old child Sophia Matilda Briggs is drawing in the Captain’s Quarters. Pictures of goats litter the room. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1946, Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader CBE DSO and Bar DFC and Bar FRAeS DL LegH CdeG RAF pleads guilty to the charge of shooting down twenty two German planes during World War II, the fifth highest total in the RAF. Shot down himself on August 9, 1941 Bader was imprisoned at Stalag Luft III at Sagan and Colditz Castle Oflag IV-C where he made numerous escape attempts despite the loss of both legs in a pre-war flying accident . Bader and Air Vice-Marshal Trafford Leigh-Mallory were active exponents of the controversial Big Wing theory, an aggressive policy of assembling large formations of defensive fighters north of London ready to inflict maximum damage on the massed German bomber formations as they flew over South East England. The duo failed to sell the strategy to the leaders of Fighter Command Air Marshal Hugh Dowding and Air Vice Marshal Keith Park; instead careful husbanding tactics were pursued by the RAF, contributing in no small part to the British defeat in the air war at the hands of the more aggressive Luftwaffe. The four were still arguing about the pros and cons of the two strategies right up until the execution of Bader on Christmas Eve of 1946. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1953, Officials at the British Natural History Museum have finished their study of the Piltdown Man skull and are preparing to release their findings to the press. A young researcher retrieves the skull from cold storage to perform one more chemical analysis on the substance used to stain the cranium to give it the appearance of age, when he notices something odd. Residue of some variety has built up on the interior of the skull, and the entire object feels slightly heavier in his hand. Before his very eyes, the skull's darkened sheen begins to fade, leaving it the color of fresh bone within minutes. By the time he can summon his superiors and return to the laboratory, the artifact has changed in an even more frightening way; The broken gaps in the skull have sealed, and new growth is evident along the fractured mandible where the monkey's jaw was supposed to have attached.
Within three hours, the jaw is whole and well-formed, complete with teeth, a layer of pinkish-gray flesh has grown over the entire artifact, and it has become warm. The panicked staff of the Museum are at a loss to explain or deal with this phenomenon, and place calls to several eminent university professors, as well as the Ministry of Health. The researcher under whose notice the transformation began tentatively and fearfully suggests destroying the skull, before being angrily shouted down by the scientists in attendance. Later, however, some of these would have cause to regret their overreaction... - entry by Guest Historian JD -

in 2126, the moderate members in the Peace and Reconciliation Committee of the Reconstructed United Nations triumph. The showcase trial of Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majidida al-Tikriti versus the redneck George Walker Bush ends in farce when the Arab nationalist Hussein confesses his weakness for imperial consumerism. Post-jihad anger is released and the consensus is that just like Hussein all men are guilty of human weakness. Even Rafsanjani confesses that Bush has struck a blow for truth. Case closed. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

Kevin walked into the Armory and saluted the officer sitting at the desk. “I'm Specialist Kevin Bradley; I was ordered to report to duty in Bryan, but I ain't gonna make it there.”
The officer returned the salute and snorted. “KBE, right?” Kevin nodded. “Yeah, they been threatenin' a lot of folks. Don't worry, Specialist Bradley, we'll let your unit in Bryan know you're here with us.” The officer turned to his computer and pulled up Kevin's file. “Computer specialist?”
“Yes, sir.”
“We could use you, then. They requisitioned all of ours for some mission up in Dallas.” He printed a form out and pulled out a pen. “Sign here, Bradley, and you're safe from prosecution.”
Kevin took the pen and signed his name on the line at the bottom. “Why do I feel like I'm gonna wish I was back in Bryan?”
“Cuz you are,” the officer said, taking the form and filing it away. “We're sendin' you into Waco.”
Kevin blinked a couple of times. “Waco?”
“Yep, they want to collect some information that's on the computers at Baylor. They can't connect through the Internet, so we have to send somebody in to see if the EMP took 'em out or if the connection's just down.”
“Beggin' your pardon, sir, but isn't there radiation in Waco?”
“High levels, from what they tell us,” the officer said. “You'll need a suit.” He picked up his phone and dialed an extension. “Morris, get in here.”
A tall black sergeant walked into the room and saluted the officer, who returned it. “Sergeant Morris, Specialist Bradley.” The two shook hands, and the officer continued on. “Morris, you're going to escort Bradley here to Baylor University in Waco - “
“Waco, sir?” Morris was a little shocked.
“Did I stutter?” After Morris regained his composure, the officer went on. “Give him the crash course in how to use a hazmat suit, and make sure he don't die while he's there.” The officer printed out the mission parameters and handed them to Morris, with a copy for Kevin. “Dismissed. And good luck.”
“Waco,” Morris muttered as they walked towards the supply wing. “Who'd I piss off?”
“Not anybody worse than me,” Kevin said, chuckling. “I just won last night's lottery.”
Sergeant Morris stopped and placed a hand on Kevin's chest. “The lottery. Millions of dollars.”
“Yep.”
“That's why you're in Austin?”
“Yep.”
Morris slapped Kevin's back and howled. “Bradley, you have got to be the unluckiest lucky son of a gun in the world!”
“Yep.”
The Guard unit here was almost deserted; most of the soldiers were already out in the field. They didn't pass anyone as they marched their way into the hazardous materials room. Sergeant Morris picked out a pair of protective suits and tossed one to Kevin. “All right, first lesson is how to get dressed.”

Alternate Historian's Note: Welcome back! We are, once again, home at Blogger, obviously. We have great work from one of our Guest Historians, Stephen Payne (who has a little something on Lulu he'd like you to look at), as well as the continuation of our novel from NaNoWriMo. Thanks for hanging with us while we were exiled to Wordpress for the last week. Wordpress, by the way, is a sweet blogging site that we can highly recommend. For now, though, on with TIAH's triumphant return!

in 0, hope springs eternal for Mullah Elijah Rafsanjani; he really is starting to feel more positive about the future. Of course his future is further forward than it was when he left Doha, Qatar two days ago. The solution to his problems are a great deal closer than he had previously thought. What foolishness to toy with europeans such as Bush, Cook, Lawrence and Columbus -they were just accessories to the real crime! This would be where the mother of all battles would be fought - the Arab town of Bayt La 2127 years before. The House of Meat as it was appropriately known to the infidels: Bethlehem. Christmas was about to be cancelled. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1872, on board the Dei Gratia, Captain Morehouse dreams that he is dining with Captain Briggs back in New York City. As they are discussing the checkered history of the Marie Celeste, Briggs is transmogrifying into a goat. He keeps trying to interrupt Briggs to warn him, but cannot interject. Finally, Briggs is just making goat noises. Morehouse wakes up screaming. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1941, Generalissimos Maurice Gamelin and Maxime Weygand meet with President Philippe Pétain in the Élysée Palace. Unable to immediately resupply de Gaulle because of the destruction of the French Mediterranean Fleet anchored at Mers-el-Kébir they must deliver reinforcements, fuel, rations and other resources no later than the first week of the new year or La Grande Armée Afrique will be paralysed. The limited options are reviewed and a decision is reached based on the Carthaginian route taken by Hannibal in the Second Punic War c220 BC. The plan is for a Franco-German expeditionary force to march across neutral Spain, smash through Gibraltar and onwards to Algiers. First Pétain will telephone Juan Negrín López in Madrid and impress the threat to Spanish Morocco upon the President. Perhaps he will permit a corridor for the Armée to pass through, or even join forces within a new Catholic alliance in the twentieth century. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

in 1944, San Francisco Bay the final Anzac refugees are welcomed to safety by Supreme Commander of Homeland Security General Douglas McArthur. The only Europeans now left in south-east Asia are the Empire of Japan's prisoners of war. -entry by Steve Payne from Counter History in Context - You're the Judge!-

Before(cont.)
“It is too dang cold to be doin' this,” Kevin grumbled at Sergeant Morris as they put on their hazmat suits. They had stopped about twenty miles south of Waco, and the air was quite chilly. The fog of their breath spread out in front of them as they struggled their way into the unwieldy protective clothing.
“Look at it this way, Bradley – it'll be a lot warmer inside the suit.”
“Yeah, I guess.” Kevin pulled the headgear on and zippered it all shut, then started up the air pump on his back. “We have to recharge every 3 hours, right?”
“3 and a half,” Morris said. “Just remember to get back to the jeep in that time, and you'll be OK.” He pointed at the recharge unit. “You still remember how to use that thing, right?”
Kevin pulled a cable from the back of his suit and pointed it at the unit. “This goes in there, I wait till the readout tells me I'm fully charged, then I unplug and work for another 3 and a half hours.”
“Outstanding,” Morris said, zippering his own gear and climbing back into the jeep. He flipped on the Geiger counter that was nestled between the seats, and it read only a slightly elevated level of background radiation. “All right, looks like we're still in a safe area. Keep an eye on that as we get closer to ground zero; the suits have an upper limit of radiation they can protect us from.”
“Good to know,” Kevin said, climbing into the front seat of the jeep. He looked down at the Geiger counter and saw its reading climbing slowly but steadily upward as they approached Waco. “What if we hit the upper limit before we get to the target?”
“We turn around and tell 'em they're gonna have to wait a couple of days. I ain't dyin' for meteorological information.”
“Good. I didn't want to have to carry your radioactive butt around Waco cuz you thought the mission was more important than our lives.” They laughed. “I wonder if us figuring that out isn't part of the mission, too.”
“Could be. Two birds, one stone, and all that.”
They drove in silence for several minutes, as Kevin watched the Geiger counter tick its way up into dangerous territory. There was a red line that indicated that next to the arm inside the dial; the arm was maybe a quarter-inch away from it now. “I wonder why we don't have a digital readout on these things.”
“More mechanical and less electronic they keep it, the less susceptible it is to an EMP,” Morris said.
“Good explanation. They teach you that, or did you just make it up?”
“Figured it out on my own,” Morris said, smirking. “I mean, what does an EMP fry? Electrical equipment, right? So, if you wanna have something take the hit and keep on workin', you got to keep it mechanical.”
“Good thinkin', Sergeant,” Kevin said. He looked up from the meter and saw that they were approaching a roadblock. Like themselves, the Guard members were in hazmat suits.
Sergeant Morris pulled up to the truck blocking the road and pulled out his orders. “We're headin' into Waco on orders for information retrieval,” he told the soldier who took the papers from him. “Much as I don't wanna.”
“I heard that, Sergeant,” the soldier said. “Let me just get my corporal's OK, and we'll move the truck out of your way.” He saluted, Morris returned it, and then he walked off.
Kevin looked at the Waco skyline. The tallest building in the distance was probably their target; the meteorology building on the A&M campus in his home town was the tallest building in the area, too. He relaxed and tried to think of himself on the beach in Maui the day after this was all over.
“All right, Bradley, here we go.” The truck blocking the road was moving out of their way. The private returned with Morris' papers. They saluted each other again and Morris set off down the road into Waco.

in 1123 Post-Creation, temptation visits Lucifer.

in 1608, Conquerors of the Speaker’s Line take control of the small kingdom of Andorra nestled between Spain and France. For the next few years, the Andorrans become the Conquerors’ testing ground for flying ships, and more horribly, for testing breathing apparatus. The Conspirators overthrow the Conquerors in 1612, and manage to erase all mention of that 4 year period from normal history.

in 1708, a slave revolt begins in Newton, Long Island, New York colony. The Africans at the heart of the revolt make contact with Algonquin in the area and convince them that every slave in the colony will come over to their side if they attack. This successful strategy drives the British from New York in the 7-year long Algonquin war.

in 1918, something springs the trap laid by the trio of Mikhail von Heflin, Velma Porter and Dr. Thaddeus McCaine. While Porter and von Heflin struggle with the creature, Dr. McCaine finds himself entranced by it – with his help, the creature taps into the ley line in Brigamere and thrusts von Heflin and Porter into a dimensional pocket. It then resumes the form of the young widow, and, with McCaine still in her power, leaves the inn and digs her way through the snow to the physical location of the ley line.

in 1931, Sir Oswald Mosley, disappointed by the two main parties in British politics, founds the New Party. Arguing for elections based on class lines rather than geographical location, the New Party is unpopular until the full effects of the Great Depression hit England. Mosley’s ranks swell with the unemployed, and he is elected Prime Minister in 1932. He makes common cause with continental fascists Mussolini of Italy, Franco of Spain and Hitler of Germany during his premiership, but where they are all gone by the end of the decade, Mosley’s rule of Britain has only begun.

in 1938, the German Underground appoints Hannah Reitsch head of the Luftwaffe, an air force they are building with assistance from their neo-Nazi comrades from the future. Her daring exploits turn the Luftwaffe into the most feared tool in the G.U.’s military arsenal.

in 1961, Comrade President Joel Rosenberg names Henry Kissinger, a refugee from the reactionary Kingdom of Germany, his Senior National Security Advisor. It is Kissinger’s advice that leads to the escalation of forces in North Chile, and the quagmire that the Soviet States of America was mired in there.

in 1966, Liverpool’s Cavern Club, where superstar Pete Best had gotten his start, closes for the final time. Best regretted the closing, saying, “I had some cool times in there,” but did little to help. Some think that he resented the club’s owner because he had continued booking Best’s old band, The Silver Beatles, and that’s why he refused to assist them in staying open.

in 1993, FBI agents and agents for the Texas Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms seize cult leader David Koresh as he jogs in Waco, Texas. He had been accused of stockpiling weapons and abusing the children of several of his cult members at his compound in Mt. Carmel, Texas. When his followers learn of this, they think that Armageddon has arrived and storm into Waco to retrieve their master; in the horrific gun battle, over 60 of the cult members, as well as 23 law enforcement agents and 17 bystanders, are killed in the Waco streets. Dozens more are wounded before order is restored.

in 1996, Air Force liaison Helen Rich proposes to President Ralph Shephard that he launch America’s nuclear arsenal at the troops invading them from occupied Canada, New England and Mexico. Shephard refuses; he is still unwilling to believe that the American heartland can be taken by foreign troops.

Timelines in today's post: the Fall, the Speaker, von Heflin, Pete Best, the Ralph Shephard timeline, Communist America, and the GZR.

“One question,” Kevin said. “How are we going to split up when we only have the one jeep?”
Jake smiled broadly. “That's where you come in, Mr. Moneybags. You're gonna buy us a couple of nice cars.”
“My first big buy, and it's gonna be for somebody else,” Kevin said, sadly.
“Hey, if we hadn't had to leave my car in Waco, I could take it,” Janice said, petulantly. “It better be there when we get back, that's all I have to say.”
“OK, so we head down to a car dealership today, buy a couple of things off the lot, then head in our opposite directions.” Jake looked around at Kevin's living room. “You got a map anywhere, Bradley?”
“Yeah, hang on,” Kevin said, going to his desk and pulling one out of a drawer. They all crowded around Kevin's coffee table as Jake unfolded the map and spread it out.
“All right, here's Crawford. Janice, you took a back road into Waco – think you could get us into Crawford the same way?”
“You got it, Sarge,” she said, saluting.
“You other four, just take the regular roads off to New Mexico. Avoid trouble, obey the curfew, be good citizens. No reason y'all should draw suspicion.”
Mike raised his hand. “Am I supposed to be her husband or something? Cuz, I don't see people buying that. I'm pretty pasty white, and the lady and the kids here – well, they aren't.”
Steph looked over at Jake, amused. Jake shook his head and tried to come up with something. “You're... you're her driver.”
“So, I just won the lottery?” Steph threw a smile at Kevin.
“Yeah, that'd work.” Jake went through the scenario. “You won the lottery, you don't like to drive, you're goin' to see family in New Mexico.”
“Cool,” Mike said. “I'm a flunky.”
“The rest of us, well, we just have to keep away from the Guard units patrolling the area. We should be able to track 'em using the radio in the jeep, but whoever's keeping watch on Crawford isn't gonna be using Guard frequencies to coordinate. So, we'll just have to be on our toes, there.” He looked up at Eli and Janice. “No shooting unless somebody's life is on the line, got it?”
Eli looked disappointed, but nodded.
Janice looked over at Kevin. “We're gonna need something with serious off-road capability; I nearly busted up my car getting it into Waco.”
“We got plenty of dealers who can provide that here,” Kevin said. “We just have to hope that they're open.”

Leaders

In 2008, West Wing fans were stunned by the uncanny similarity between the fictional presidential contest that dominated the final seasons of the acclaimed TV show and the real-life drama of this year's US Presidential election. In fact, the similiarity was no coincidence at all.

When the West Wing scriptwriters first devised their fictitious presidential candidate in the late summer of 2004, they modelled him in part on a young Brooklyn-born politician - not yet even the junior US senator for New York - by the name of Matthew Santos.
 -
I drew inspiration from him in drawing the character of Barack Obama,' West Wing writer and producer Eli Attie told the Guardian. 'When I had to write, Santos was just appearing on the national scene. He had done a great speech at the convention and people were beginning to talk about him.'

Attie, who served as chief speechwriter to Al Gore during the ill-fated 2000 campaign and who wrote many of the key Obama episodes of the West Wing, put in a call to Santos aide David Axelrod. 'I said, Tell me about this guy Matthew Santos.'

The result is a bizarre case of art imitating life - only for life to imitate art back again.

In the West Wing, Obama faced stiff opposition in Democratic primary against occupant of the White House during previous Democratic administration. Rivals attack him as inexperienced after just six years in Congress, but triumphs through grassroots support, inspiring speeches and message of change. Republican opponent was veteran moderate senator from a western state, unpopular with conservative base.

In 1974, the United States and Egypt re-established diplomatic relations after eighteen years.

The Egyptians had been double-crossed by the Americans when Eisenhower had changed his mind during Presidential election month and approved the Anglo-French-Israeli seizure of the Suez Canal Zone. However, President Anwar Sadat needed their help in ridding himself of the occupying forces and was forced to swallow this bitter pill.

In 2001, an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale hit the Nisqually Valley and the Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia area of the U.S. state of Washington. Confederate President William Jefferson Clinton promised massive aid to his northern neighbour, as US/CS relations continued to thaw.
.
In 1844, President John Tyler, who had himself been raised to the presidency by the death of his predecessor William Harrison, is killed by the explosion of an experimental cannon aboard the USS Princeton. Tyler had no vice-president to succeed him, so the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Virginian John Winston Jones, assumed the high office. President Jones, who had been planning on retiring, found that the power of the presidency was quite intoxicating, and used the influence he had as the incumbent to secure the Democratic Party's nomination for the 1844 elections. He won against the Whig candidate, Senator Henry Clay, in a hotly contested and close election. His stridently pro-Southern policies rubbed the northern states the wrong way, and Henry Clay, although a Southerner himself, used this disaffection to hobble Jones' power. The conflict between them is widely attributed to the shortening of Jones' life, something Clay expressed little remorse over in later years. When President Jones died in 1847, his vice-president, James K. Polk, assumed office in the middle of a war with Mexico and widespread dissatisfaction with the government. Polk's mismanagement of the Mexican War led to a wave of secessions from states bordering Mexico, and the diminishment of the once-bright shining star of the US.

In 1966, Liverpool's Cavern Club, where superstar Pete Best had gotten his start, closes for the final time. Best regretted the closing, saying, 'I had some cool times in there,' but did little to help. Some think that he resented the club's owner because he had continued booking Best's old band, The Silver Beatles, and that's why he refused to assist them in staying open.
In 1900, the 118-day Siege of Ladysmith is lifted at a cost of 3,000 British deaths as Imperial Troops defeat the Boers and their German allies. The Kaiser cynically intervened in the Second Boer War to claim a share of the mineral wealth of South Africa for the Second Reich.
.
In 1931, Sir Oswald Mosley, disappointed by the two main parties in British politics, founds the New Party.

Arguing for elections based on class lines rather than geographical location, the New Party is unpopular until the full effects of the Great Depression hit England. Mosley's ranks swell with the unemployed, and he is elected Prime Minister in 1932. He makes common cause with continental fascists Mussolini of Italy, Franco of Spain and Hitler of Germany during his premiership, but where they are all gone by the end of the decade, Mosley's rule of Britain has only begun.

In 1708, a slave revolt begins in Newton, Long Island, New York colony. The Africans at the heart of the revolt make contact with Algonquin in the area and convince them that every slave in the colony will come over to their side if they attack. This successful strategy drives the British from New York in the 7-year long Algonquin war.
.
Dozens more are wounded before order is restored.
.
Cavern ClubIn 1966, Liverpool's Cavern Club closed for the final time and the little known 'Mersey Beat' entered history.

Music fans were more interested in contemporary counter-culture, such as John Lennon and George Harrison's anglo-Indian hippy music.

Olof PalmeIn 1986, on this day BBC News reported - Swedish prime minister assassinated: The Swedish prime minister has died after being shot in a street ambush in central Stockholm. His wife was wounded. Olof and Lisbeth Palme were attacked as they were leaving a cinema at about 2330 local time. Mr Palme was shot twice in the stomach, his wife was shot in the back. Police say a taxi-driver used his mobile radio to raise the alarm. Two young girls sitting in a car close to the scene of the shooting tried to help the Prime Minister. He was rushed to hospital but was dead on arrival. Mrs Palme is being treated for her injury, but it is not thought to be life threatening.

Pacifist
Mr Palme, 59, and a social democrat, was serving his second term as leader. He believed in open government and shunned tight security. He had two bodyguards to protect him on official functions but frequently walked unattended through the Swedish capital and went on holidays unescorted to his summer cottage on the island of Gotland. His assassination will come as a shock to the Swedes. They have always taken great pride in the fact their prime minister could walk openly in the streets without the security which accompanies other heads of state. Mr Palme will be remembered as a campaigner for the working classes and Third World causes. He was first elected as prime minister in 1969. He became a leading advocate of peace and non violence and campaigned for an end to the war in Vietnam. It was unfinished business for the CIA.
.
In 1931, the New Party is founded in Great Britain by Oswald Mosley and Europe of the Dictators approaches its final shape.
.
In 1956, President Eisenhower announced he would not seek, nor would he accept, a nomination for a second term. Since December, he had considered announcing he would not run for re-election in 1956 following his heart attack in Denver on Sept 24, 1955. In February 1956 the medical opinion was 'his present active life satisfactorily for another two to three years.'
